Shimonoseki Japan Travel Guide | Tsunoshima Bridge, Motonosumi Shrine & Akiyoshido Cave

Welcome to Shomineski, Japan. A hidden gem where dramatic coastline, spiritual shrines, and ancient caves await. Join us as we explore some of the region’s most stunning sites, taste one of the most daring delicacies, and uncover a few surprises along the way. Our first stop is the breathtaking Shunoshima Island Bridge. Stretching nearly 1,780 m, it’s one of the longest toll-free bridges in Japan and definitely one of the most scenic. The bridge connects the mainland to the small island of Sunoshima, arching gracefully over the brilliant turquoise water that almost feels tropical. From there, we headed to one of the most photogenic spots in Japan, the Matamasumi Anari Shrine. This shrine is relatively young, established in 1955. One of the traditions here, well, you don’t toss your coin into a box. You try to get it into the donation box perched over the Tory gate. Let’s just say it’s easier said than done. Perched on the cliffs overlooking the Sea of Japan, this shrine is known for its 123 vibrant red Tory gates. Winding down to the rocky shoreline like a river of red. This place blends spiritual calm with wild natural beauty. And it’s not crowded, which makes it feel like a real discovery. We ended a day underground in the incredible Akiashido Cave. One of Japan’s largest limestone caverns stretching for over 10 kilometers with about 1 kilometer open to the public. This cave is a cool escape filled with dramatic formations, towering ceilings, and crystalclear pools. Some of the highlights include the 100 plates formation, a series of flat terrace rock pools, and the golden pillar, a column-shaped stelactite. Walking through here feels like stepping through another world. Quiet, mysterious, and ancient. It’s hard to believe a place like this exists beneath the hills of rural Japan. [Music]
