Australia’s largest steelmaker, BlueScope, has formed a consortium with companies from Japan, South Korea and India to bid for the ailing Whyalla manufacturing plant, which received a $2.4 billion government bailout package earlier this year.

BlueScope has been working on the Whyalla steelworks bid, which was given the code name Project Wellington, with South Korean steelmaker POSCO, Japan’s Nippon Steel and India’s JSW Steel conglomerate, according to people familiar with the sale process but not authorised to speak publicly.
