【Fukuoka, Japan】A guide to 12 foods you want to eat on trip, including ramen and tempura (Part 1)
Starting from this time, I will be sending you a two-part guide to eating around Fukuoka Prefecture, the largest city in Kyushu. I have been eating a lot of local Fukuoka delicacies, including ramen. Please enjoy until the end! Good morning. Today, I will be eating local delicacies while working in Hakata City, Fukuoka Prefecture. I was worried because it rained yesterday, but I’m glad it was sunny♪ First, I took a leisurely walk to Hakata Station, where I work. It’s still as big as ever. After finishing work at Fukuoka Station, I went to eat lunch. Well, I decided to start with a restaurant recommended by a local♪ This is the restaurant. It’s a pretty big building. After a short walk from Hakata Station, I arrived at “Hakata Meidai Yoshizuka Unagi-ya”. It has a magnificent exterior and looks very prestigious. It’s a place that usually takes courage to enter. It was founded in 1873. It is a famous restaurant that has fans among celebrities. It seems that the restaurant is divided into elevator reserved seats and general seats. I was guided to a counter seat. And here is the menu. It seems to be divided into eel bowls and eel rice bowls. This is the first time I’ve seen eel and rice separated in eel rice bowl. Should I order this? I also wanted to order grilled liver, but unfortunately it was sold out. It seems to be limited quantity. First came tea and pickles. The sauce came on a separate plate, which is also a first. This is Japanese pepper. Oh, is this Japanese pepper? I was waiting. It arrived in about 10 minutes. It looks like a two-tiered lunch box. This is a jubako that makes you wonder what’s inside. Let’s open it! Oh, there’s eel on top. There was white rice underneath. Let’s eat it with the soup. I immediately took a slice of eel. Oh, it’s delicious♪ It’s crispy and fragrant. The meat is plump and fatty. Eel is really delicious. There’s no smell, of course, and the sweetness and flavor of the meat spreads in your mouth. You’ll want to keep eating it. And the sauce is delicious too. It’s light, but has a strong sweetness and richness that brings out the flavor of the eel. There was a middle-aged man in an elegant suit eating eel alone in the restaurant. There was also a group of people about the same age as me or younger, so there was a surprisingly wide range of customers. I really wanted to try the liver skewer. By the way, this is a side note. If you consider the price of the liver skewers, it’s more expensive than putting an egg on a beef bowl at a cheap restaurant. It’s a price that would be enough to fill me up for lunch, but since eel is expensive, it feels cheap so I end up ordering it anyway. Changing the subject, when you listen to what people in the audio industry have to say… They say that car dealerships are the best sellers of high-end audio equipment that costs hundreds of thousands of yen. The price is completely different, but the reason is as simple as liver skewer. After buying a car that costs millions of yen, it feels like it’s cheap and you loosen your purse strings. I wonder if they’ve done a lot of research on this kind of psychology? While thinking about such unrefined things, I finished eating the delicious eel in the historic restaurant lol. Ah, it was delicious… Thank you for letting me know! Well, I have a little plan for later, so I’ll stop eating. I quickly finished my work. After a break, I went back to the shop I was looking for. Oh, that’s Tenjin Station! I’ve walked this road before. I’m sure I went from the station to Dazaifu on my way back from eating the “mentai-ju” that I mentioned before. Since yesterday, nostalgic scenery has suddenly come back to me. Basically, the places that stay in my memory when I go on a trip are tourist spots and shops. It’s fun to look back on them because I can remember the details when I look at the photos later or walk around them in person. When I go on a trip, I try to take as many pictures as possible, even in ordinary places in the city. Nowadays, you can take as many pictures as you want with your smartphone. It’s more convenient than when I used an instant camera. While walking while remembering the nostalgic scenery, I arrived at the place I was looking for♪ I arrived at a building called “Solaria Stage” adjacent to Tenjin Station. Take the escalator up to the second floor. I arrived in front of the ticket gate of Tenjin Station. It seems that the second floor is the station and the third floor is the bus terminal. There are quite a few restaurants lined up around the ticket gate. We went to Gourmet Fugetsu Nishitetsu Fukuoka Tenjin Station, a long-established Western restaurant in Fukuoka that has been in business for over 50 years. There are a lot of delicious meat dishes on the menu, but… The specialty is this butter-grilled beef. It’s a Fukuoka specialty that locals love♪ They also have a half-course menu, and you can choose bread in addition to rice. Ah, beer is good when you’re traveling… Apparently 70% of customers order it. First came the soup and sauce. This original barbecue sauce is important for butter-grilled beef. Wow, it’s so filling♪ We pour the secret sauce on top. The steam is great. The fragrant smell is floating around. The soy sauce smells so good… just smelling it makes me want to eat rice. We wait until the sauce stops splashing. Is it about time? Well, sorry to keep you waiting! Let’s eat it with rice. First, the meat. Yes… this is so delicious. The sauce is like a jelly. It looks appetizing too. The shredded meat is as tender as it looks, and the sauce is well mixed in. It’s surprisingly light and not too heavy. You can taste the richness of the soy sauce and the sweetness of the vegetables, and it’s delicious even if you pour it over rice as it is. When it’s mixed with the dripping meat juice, you can’t stop eating rice. The faint aroma of butter is also nice. If it’s allowed, I’d like to have as much rice as I want and fill myself up. Well, it’s up to me, so no one will blame me lol. I have other restaurants I want to go to, so I’ll look forward to the next time. And the pasta soaked in the fat of the meat and the sauce is also delicious. There are also some fragrant parts that are crispy grilled on the hot plate, making it a perfect side dish. I heard it’s called “pasta that can be eaten with rice”. You’re right♪ It seems that they also sell a special barbecue sauce. This is certainly interesting. You can eat butter-grilled beef at Fukuoka Airport, a long-established Western restaurant that has been in business for over 50 years. If you’re interested, please try it. Wow, this is an addictive taste. Thank you for the meal! Well, let’s go to another store♪ Oh, it was quite complicated from Solaria Stage, but if you go up from here, you’ll be right in front of the ticket gate. When I hear “Nishitetsu”, the image that comes to mind is the baseball team “Lions”. The Lions have moved to Saitama, but before that, they were based in Fukuoka as the “Nishitetsu Lions”. Nowadays, when you think of Fukuoka’s baseball team, you think of the Softbank Hawks, but before that, it was the well-known supermarket “Daiei Hawks”. When I was a child, there were Seibu and Daiei supermarkets near my house. Every autumn, they would play cheering songs in the store and have sales. At that time, the Lions were strong, so Seibu would have a “Congratulations on your victory sale”, while Daiei had a “Thank you for your support throughout the year sale”. I remember that there were many years when they had a “Thank you for your support throughout the year sale”. I lived in Tokyo and didn’t know much about the baseball teams, but I was able to hum their cheering songs as a child lol. In Fukuoka, where I have such a connection, I walked for 10 minutes while enjoying the sea breeze of the Genkai Sea. Ah, it’s here. I passed by yesterday too. Even if I remember the image, I don’t remember the name or location of the building. I’m often surprised when a familiar building suddenly appears in the middle of an unfamiliar city. Now, where is the restaurant? Is it written here? Ah, there it is. This seems to be a building called “ACROS Fukuoka”. The restaurant is on the second basement floor, so go down the stairs. To a corner of the food court. I arrived at “Tempura Hirao ACROS Store”. In front of the ticket machine, there are a number of tempting set meals. After a lot of deliberation, these two are my final candidates. Which one should I choose? I chose this one, showing my indecisiveness. The difference between me was “conger eel” and “pork”, but this time I chose the okonomiyaki set meal with pork. There is a kitchen in the center of the counter seats, and they serve freshly fried tempura one by one. When I sat down and handed over my meal ticket, a tray with salted squid and tempura sauce came. It was filled with plenty of grated daikon radish. This salted squid is also said to be very delicious. It seems you can have more. The first dish of tempura came immediately with rice and miso soup. This looks like squid, and shrimp also came. First I drank the miso soup… This is white fish, let’s eat. Tempura is delicious as expected♪ It’s crispy. It’s freshly fried and definitely delicious. The meat is also hot and fluffy, and you can fully enjoy the freshness of fried food. This makes me worry about how much rice is left. The shrimp has a thin batter, so you can feel the firmness of the meat♪ The texture is fun and you can fully enjoy the shrimp flavor. I’m glad that the hero of the tempura world is delicious. And this is salted squid. Is the yellow thing yuzu? Ah, this is also delicious… I can’t stop eating rice. The yuzu flavor is also good and it goes perfectly with rice. Then, while I was enjoying the salted fish, a mountain of tempura came, along with vegetables and pork tempura. The thing that surprised me the most was the green pepper. It was so fresh that I couldn’t believe it was tempura, and the juice was overflowing from inside. The pork tempura was huge♪ Delicious! It was as crispy as I expected. It was sweet and thinly sliced, but it was very satisfying to eat. The tempura sauce was sweeter and thicker than the usual thin one. Maybe it’s because it contains a lot of grated daikon radish? It was rich in flavor and made me want rice. The last dish was squid. It was so delicious. If it was in my hometown, I would go there all the time. It seems like there are a lot of reasonably priced tempura restaurants in Fukuoka. The squid was also delicious, fluffy♪ This time I came because it was close by and easy to get to. The locals recommended many other tempura restaurants. The tempura was reasonably priced and delicious, and I would like to try other restaurants in the future. I enjoyed the famous Fukuoka soul food. Well, I’ll go to one more place♪ I was heading to a place recommended by locals for the last one, but. Before that, I was interested in the shop next door called “Ito King” and went in. There were delicious looking sweets and a bold shop curtain in front of the store. I also noticed something called “Ama Gori Smoothie” which I think is cute. They recommend sweets made with Amaou. All the sweets have a luxurious strawberry flavor. I was also interested in the shaved ice on the left, but I ordered the “Ama Gori Smoothie”. It looks rich. I took a bite right away. By the way, I ate it in the eat-in space at the back of the store. Yes, it’s delicious♪ The balance of strawberries and milk is perfect. You can feel the sweetness of the strawberries directly, but the milk makes the sourness mellow. It’s smooth and goes down well, and I can see why it’s popular. I finished it in no time! It seems to be available at Fukuoka Airport. After having the smoothie, I looked at other sweets. I think the POP is a bit playful lol. I wonder if it’s their intention to attract customers’ attention like this? The sweets looked luxurious and delicious, so I decided to buy some and eat them at the hotel. Anyway, after a little detour, I went to the original destination, this restaurant. I went into “Kurume Taiho Ramen Tenjin Imaizumi Branch”. I ordered a simple ramen (700 yen)♪ I started eating right away. The cloudy soup is delicious♪ It’s mellow and has a rich pork bone flavor. The firm, thin straight noodles also go well with the pork bone soup. I was able to enjoy the traditional taste of Fukuoka’s specialty. Sorry. I didn’t have any footage of me eating, so I introduced it briefly. I went back the way I came and returned to the hotel. That’s all for now. Next time, I’ll have the sweets.
