Why I Hit Record π₯ | Kansai Reflections Ep. 1
Years [Music] ago, I started filming my travels to capture the places I saw, not knowing I was also recording how they were quietly changing me. It all really started here in Japan, a place that made me slow down, pay attention, and notice things I’d usually miss. This trip moves through Oaka, Kyoto, Kobe, and N, but also through thoughts, memories, and the moments that rarely make it to the frame. This isn’t just about where I went. It’s about what stayed with me. I used to travel a lot before. Well, I guess until now, but I remember times when I would go through a lot of places and take photos and then when I get home, I forget some stuff. Yes, I could share the photos, but there has always been that longing to capture the feeling, the emotion, the happiness, the smile, and most especially the movement. And then I pressed the record button and things were different. different good my journey towards recording photography and generally um taking into account my travel started here in Japan. I was then working in the Philippines and I had been asked to represent the Philippines in one of those um Jika programs for the capital markets and there I’ve always been you know curious on the topic of photography and I I’d always been wanting to get my first SLR as a matter of fact and then a part of that a part of that journey was Jika allowing us to see a lot of the places here in both Tokyo and Osaka. And after that I was like, “Wow, this is awesome. This is actually awesome.” That’s the first bite of that bullet. [Music] And from then on the interest was more about photography and not really recording as it is now. So if you ask me when did I finally hit that record button? Honestly I don’t remember. But what I remembered is that wouldn’t it be nice to actually capture adventures beyond just photos? I mean, photos are great for sure, but what if I could immortalize that adventure into something that’s more moving, something that would capture, you know, the smiles, the the journey, the the reaction. And that’s mainly one of the reasons why I thought why don’t I explore recording the journey little by little I I tried really capturing just snippets of it. Not really an entire thing of, you know, how to get there. Not really about how much it costs. It’s just more, you know, me capturing short videos to remind me of certain um moments. It’s just capturing the moments. It’s not like the full vlog, you know, um style right now where, you know, we give you tips on how to save this, how to do this, how to get from one place to another because at that time, you know, you have to figure it out on your own. It’s about your survival instinct, right? So that that time was very exciting and I guess one of the reasons why I’m doing the video today is because Japan has been very monumental in that recording your journey thing because I always go back here. I love this place. It has, let’s just say, opened my the window or the door for me to start recording my travels. And I’ve I’ve never stopped going. I just love the the the serenity in the middle of the chaos, the beauty, and the simplicity of the place. Sorry. And as I was saying, it doesn’t hurt that the food is so good. So that’s the reason we always come back here. The initial task of recording moments of your travel or your life or your journey seems to be easy. Just hit record and then do whatever. But as time goes by, you kind of yearn something a little bit more, let’s just say, better, more intentional. And when you see the product of that effort, it makes it all worth it. Maybe one question you have is how what does it feel like or how does it feel like to be doing this recording people looking at you while you’re walking and you’re basically talking to a gadget. Well, I’ll be honest with you. It was awkward. It’s always been awkward. It seems weird for sure, but then you get over it because once you realize that the things that you’re covering, the memories that you’re capturing really goes beyond what other people will say. those things disappear because in the end it is your adventure that matters. It’s your life. It’s your adventure. You’re not always here all the time. And so as long as you’re being polite, I don’t see any problem with, you know, talking to this little camera. So perhaps one question that I have noted here is how does that really change um the way I’ve been documenting my travels? So, I take less photos for sure, but I still do take them. I take a different set of gears and I’m mindful of the weather because sometimes it would rain and sometimes it would run out of battery and it didn’t bring any spare or you know those little mistakes. And then you need to be mindful of this little thing, your mic, because sometimes I’d be babbling for like five minutes and then the mic is off, you know. Um, again, it changes the way or it changed the way I travel in a way that I’m now more focused on capturing, you know, things as they happen and That’s not always easy. And like right now, I started off very quiet and then it started to get very noisy. And I don’t even know if you’re if you’re still hearing what I’m talking about. So yeah. Um, of course you definitely need no more big cameras, no more SLRs, but it’s just more, you know, as stealthy as as possible. It’s definitely not as heavy. And um, what else? This camera allows me to not always uh think about if I am getting the shot because it’s not an advertisement. It always gets the shot. So sometimes I don’t even have to look at it. I just focus on what I’m looking at. So that’s why I love this camera. Okay. I didn’t start filming because my trips were so amazing. I just didn’t want to forget the small things like the sound of the streets, how good the food was, or how it felt to be somewhere new. Pressing record helped me remember those moments. But after a while, it also helped me see myself, how I reacted when I got lost, what made me stop and look, and how I’ve slowly changed with every trip. That is why I kept filming. Not to make perfect videos, actually far from it, but to remember how I felt and who I was. [Music]
