Silent Hill f, Konami’s upcoming horror game, is set in the fictional town of Ebisugaoka, but the game almost took inspiration from a real-world location in Japan: Shizuoka Prefecture, where Mt. Fuji is located.
In an interview with Famitsu (via VGC), writer Ryukishi07 revealed that the team originally looked into using Shizuoka as a base while building the story. He wanted everyone involved in the project to share a clear image of the setting, so they scouted real locations for reference.
He added that the team even went to visit the Shizuoka Prefecture as a potential location. Ryushiki07 then went on to explain why the studio didn’t go through with using Shizuoka Prefecture, saying that Mount Fuji’s presence was too strong from Shizuoka. He added that the location didn’t suit the setting of Silent Hill.
“With the sacred mountain Fuji looking down on us no matter where we were, the misty worldview of the work would be overshadowed,” he said.
Instead, he pitched Hida-Kanayama, a town known for its grid-like layout, as a more fitting option. He liked its unique shape and suggested it to the rest of the team.
