COMMUNITY News:
Los Alamos Arts Council is sponsoring the next Tokyo Nights Anime Lounge with a screening of the award-winning film Koe no Katachi (A Silent Voice), at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 9 at SALA Event Center. This free event is a place to connect, reflect, and explore the powerful themes of identity, empathy, and second chances. Bring a friend, enjoy some Japanese-themed snacks and refreshments in the lo-fi lounge, and experience a movie that sticks with you long after the credits roll.
Follow the story of Shoya Ishida, a boy who once bullied a deaf classmate, Shoko Nishimiya, in elementary school. Years later, burdened by guilt and isolated from others, Shoya sets out to make amends and find a way to reconnect with her—and himself. What unfolds is a journey of facing the past, embracing vulnerability, and discovering the courage to heal.
At its heart, it’s a relatable story about the struggles many of us face—the pain of being different and not fitting in, how difficult yet essential it is to truly listen and be heard, understanding mistakes and choosing to grow from them, and realizing that everyone deserves love and connection. This film doesn’t shy away from real emotions, and it opens the door for honest reflection about bullying, anxiety, and the silent battles we face.
