MANILA–In a blockbuster inter-league transfer, Japan B.League side Kyoto Hannaryz pulled off a late July surprise by signing Jamie Malonzo.

Just as Malonzo and the rest of Gilas Pilipinas arrived in Jeddah ahead of the FIBA Asia Cup, Kyoto announced its acquisition of the six-foot-seven high-flying forward.

“I want to take a moment to express my heartfelt gratitude for the warm welcome I’ve received from the entire Kyoto Hannaryz family. It’s an honor to join such a passionate team and community in Japan,” Malonzo said in a statement on Thursday.

Malonzo’s recent contract with Barangay Ginebra has already expired, opening an opportunity for the Hannaryz to sign him.

This is also an opportunity for the former La Salle one-and-done standout to regain his stellar form after a calf injury in April last year slowed him down, Ginebra and Gilas-wise.

“First, I want to thank the team management for believing in me and giving me this incredible opportunity. Your support means a lot, and I’m eager to contribute to our success this season. I am genuinely excited about what lies ahead, and I can’t wait to hit the court with my teammates, bringing energy and determination to every game. I’m looking forward to building strong connections with all of you, both on and off the court, and helping to elevate the basketball culture in Kyoto,” Malonzo further said.

Despite finishing third in the West Division, the Hannaryz fell six games short of making the playoffs last season, and they hope that Malonzo will help them finish the job.

“Let’s make this season unforgettable together! Thank you for your support, and I can’t wait to meet each of you at the arena!” Malonzo exclaimed in the end.

Kyoto is currently looking for a new head coach after Roy Rana accepted an offer to coach Dar Tucker-led Jordan.
