JP00 – 10 Days in Japan πŸ‡―πŸ‡΅ | Full Itinerary, Budget Breakdown & Mistakes to Avoid

Hello, welcome to Travelling Checklist. I am Hitesh and I am Ujjwal and today’s video is going to be a completely informative video. If you are planning a trip to Japan in the upcoming days, then do watch this video till the end. Because this sort of thing is going to be just like a checklist for you, which you can use and then travel to Japan. In this video, we will tell you all the details of our Japan trip, which will include visa, flights, accommodation, what to do and what not to do and overall budget. Along with this, we are going to give tips with a bonus at the end, so that you know what applications you have to use and again how much money we spent, what was our budget, we will share all those details with you. So, let’s start. First thing, which is the planning thing So, the most important thing in planning is that when you have to go on any trip. So, if we talk about Japan, then the most famous is Sakura season, which is the cherry blossoms that you have seen. So, most people prefer, because at that time Japan is very beautiful, so most people prefer that we travel at that time. But again, if Japan is beautiful at that time, then it is also very coastal. So, all the hotels or all the tours that you will get, you will get them at almost one and a half times the prices, all the flights etc. So, if you don’t want to overspend so much, then you can choose the shoulders months, like you can travel in May or June or you can travel in winter. This is again up to you. That’s why we chose our travel in May, because comparatively the crowd is less and accommodations are cheaper. If you are also planning your trip and you want to check if there will be a crowd at that time, if there are no holidays or if there is no local New Year, then you can refer to the calendar release of JR. I will also give the link of that in the description, so you can prefer that calendar. You can plan with that that you should go comparatively in less crowd. The next thing that comes in the planning is how to apply for a visa. The visa of Japan is very easy to apply. You can get all the details from the official website of BFS, like what documents are required in it, what is the process. Let me tell you a little bit in detail that the documents required for Japan’s visa are comparatively less than for the Schengen region. In this you will need simple things like visa form, passport, photo, cover letter, itinerary, flight details and your stay details. The cover letter and itinerary have a specific template in which you will write that why are you going, where will you go, you need a detailed itinerary. If you want its template, then you can DM us on our Instagram channel, which is called Traveling Checklist and we will give you a ready to use template free of cost. The cost of Japan visa is about, the visa fee is about 510 rupees from India, but when you apply in BFS, it cost us almost 3600 for a couple, because there were some processing charges of BFS plus courier charges because our passport had to be delivered back home. And you don’t need to take any appointment for this, you can directly walk in and you won’t take much time, your entire process will be completed in an hour. And using all these details, the visa currency that we have applied is a 5-year multi-entry visa of Japan. Now let’s talk about flights. We booked our flights 2-3 months ago and we recommend you to book your flights 2-3 months in advance. We flew with Vietnam Airlines and it cost us around 42000 per person for round trip. Now let’s talk about accommodation. If you want accommodation in Japan, then you have 3 options. You can stay in hotels or in Airbnb or some people prefer to stay in hostel, who travel alone. So, hotels will be a little costly comparatively, so we chose Airbnb. And we took Airbnb in two places, one in Tokyo and in Osaka, because these were our bases. And we got Airbnb on an average of 4000-5000 per night. We stayed in Japan for almost 10-12 nights. And if you want to see how our Airbnbs were, then we have given a tour of Airbnbs in our Japan series. And I will put the link of Airbnbs in the description below, you can check it out. Now let’s talk about our itinerary. We planned our Japan trip for almost 10 days. We gave 3 nights in Tokyo and 7 nights in Osaka. And in the meantime, we did a lot of day trips. After visiting Tokyo, we made Osaka our base. And then we did a lot of day trips from there, like Kyoto, Nara, Hiroshima, Amano, Hashidate. We did all those trips by making Osaka our base. This choice depends on you, if you can make Kyoto your base. We made Osaka our base because we thought it was more accessible. And again, it was a little more lively as compared to Kyoto. Now when it comes to Japan, everyone has a question in their mind. What is JR Pass and which JR Pass should be used? So, first of all, let me give you some basic information about JR Pass. JR Pass is a Japan Rail Pass. So, this is a pass in which you make a one-time payment. And then using that, you can travel in a lot of things like trains, buses, ferries, etc. Mostly, it is used for rails. Even in this, it does not mean that you have taken JR Pass in Japan and will travel for free. But yes, you have to travel in specific trains. It is possible that the specific train may be a little away from you, where you live. But you can travel in those specific trains. But most of the trains are included in it. Now which JR Pass should be taken and which should not be taken? So, this depends on your itinerary. We were going to Osaka from Tokyo and we had to fly back from Osaka. We had booked Osaka from Tokyo from Shinkansen. And from there, we used JR Pass. So, JR Pass is of two major types. One is full JR Pass, which is applicable to all the areas in Japan. You can use it anywhere across Japan. So, you get it by doing this for 7 days, 14 days, 21 days. And 7 days would cost you around 50,000 yen. Which is a little expensive, I felt. And there are other passes, regional passes. Which is that you can take those trains in a specific area. If you go outside that area, you will have to pay. So, there will be at least 10 types of passes. You can take the pass of North Japan, South Japan or Kansai area. So, there was one pass which was suitable for our itinerary. Which was Kansai Hiroshima Pass. So, we had pre-booked Kansai Hiroshima Pass from here. And we had taken that for 5 days. And it costed us around 17,000 yen. And I think that was the best for us. Because when we were in Osaka, if we had to go to Kyoto, Nara, Hiroshima, Amano Hachidate, we used that. And it was fine for 5 days. We had booked that through Klook. If you want to book that, I will give the link below. And we got the benefit of booking through Klook. Because along with booking the JR Pass, we got free eSIM with it. Which was enough for us. And we used the same when we were in Japan. And if you want to travel locally, it will be best if you buy a Suica card. From the airport itself, you get a 28-day Suica card. Which is an IC card. Which you keep recharging. Machines to recharge the IC card. Machines. You get every metro station and every train station. You can use that and travel locally. Wherever you want to go. And if you want to plan some day trips, You will need some planning for that. Like if you want to go to Mount Fuji, If you want to go to Kawaguchi from Tokyo, You will have to book a bus for that. For those details, you can check out our Mount Fuji video. We have given the full details in that. And also I will put the link in the description if you want to open it. Now let’s talk about food. Before going to Japan, We were so concerned that Whether we will get vegetarian food or not. But luckily, there were so many options in Japan. We explored so many cafes. Where we were getting good vegetarian food. Be it convenience store, be it cafes, be it… And most importantly, there were many choices of Indian restaurants. So you don’t have to be afraid. You can easily go to Japan. And there you can explore many vegetarian cafes and restaurants. And again, I will tell you about one of the bonus features of this app. When we go to the bonus section. The app that you can use, You can easily find any vegan vegetarian restaurant. And you can go there. Next is cultural etiquette. So Japan, although it is a very modern country, But it is also a cultural country. So whenever you are not going to Japan, We have to understand that we should follow their culture. And we should respect their culture. We have to travel sensibly. So the first point of cleanliness comes in it. They are very serious about their cleanliness. And there we found out how clean the roads are. There is no trash anywhere. And in fact, you don’t even get trash bins anywhere so easily. So be ready that when you go there, If you are buying anything from anywhere and eating it, Then either put that trash in your bag or keep a polythene with you. In which you can carry that trash. And whenever there are vending machines, You will get dustbins around them. You can put them in it. Next thing which you have to consider is the cleanliness of your airbnb’s. If you are staying in airbnb’s, First and foremost, don’t take your shoes inside them. There is the can-can area which we have shown in our airbnb’s. Take out your slippers or shoes there. And put the slippers of your house there. And the second important thing is for trash collection. Because there, please go through your guide of airbnb’s. The trash collection rules should be followed properly. Because if you don’t follow them, Then it is possible that you keep your garbage outside. And no garbage will be taken away. So, we have kept the garbage which was defined that day. Next thing is whether you should keep it in your packing. First and foremost would be the universal adapter. Because the sockets in Japan are different from ours. So, it will be better if you keep a universal adapter. Which we have since 2-3 years. And it is working for us. We have used it in Europe, Korea and here also. I will put the link of that in the description. You can buy it from Amazon. The second and the most important thing to pack is Your comfortable walking shoes. Because in Japan, even if you don’t want to, You have to walk 15,000 steps in a day. So, the most important thing is to take two pairs of shoes. I wanted to do a light pack, so I took only one pair. And what happened was on the day of our day trip to Nara, Which you must have seen, it was heavily rainy. And our shoes were all wet. So, even on that day, I walked in wet shoes. And in fact, the necks were not dry. So, I had to walk in them. So, I would suggest to take two pairs of shoes. Even though the second pair will not be used, But you should have a backup. The next very important thing is Whether you can avoid mistakes. So, the first thing is over packing your itinerary. It means that you can explore a lot in Japan. There is a lot to explore in Japan. Not just the touristy destinations, shrines or temples. But you can keep your day easy. So, I would highly suggest that you plan two or three destinations in your day. Like planning two or three tourist attractions. And leave the rest of your day loose. And explore only in that. Because that will be the best for you. Otherwise, you will be just going through the tourist destinations one by one. And getting tired. That’s it. And local Japan is very, very beautiful. So, I guess you will have to leave your schedule loose. So that you can go to places that you may not have planned. And you have to consider that Japan is a very trending destination now. Not only across the world. Indians are also going a lot. So, for that, you should pre-book your things wherever possible. Because if something gets famous on Instagram or anywhere else. Then they get sold out very easily. So, for example, your one would be the team labs museum. In which we also went to the borderless. Or Ghibli museum. You have to pre-book that. About a month in advance. So that you may not get a ticket at that time. And also, if you want to travel using Shinkansen. Then you have to try to buy your tickets first. Because this is a very busy route from Tokyo to Osaka. So, it is possible that you may not get Shinkansen tickets. And the third one would be the Mount Fuji bus. You have to pre-book that too. Because as we have shown in our video. That day it was sold out. So, it will be better for you to pre-book. And the fourth mistake is. Most of the people don’t carry their cash. And Japan being modern. But people there still use cash. For their local shops and everything. So, always carry your cash. And please carry a small coin pouch. So that you can carry all the coins all together. Because so many coins will be collected at your place. That you will start taking them out. That why they are not getting finished. So, please carry your cash. And please carry your coin pouch. And please keep minimum 10,000 to 12,000 yen in your pocket. Because places like Gion in Kyoto. The shops there. They all demand cash. Your cards will run very less there. That is why carry your cash. One more thing. If you are going to Mount Fuji. If you are going to Mount Fuji. We didn’t follow this thing. If you are going to Mount Fuji. There are buses for traveling in Mount Fuji. Red Line Bus, Green Line Bus. So, if you are going to Mount Fuji. You will see 2-3 places more. You can go to Oishi Park. Or you will go to Choretu Pagoda. So, for Choretu Pagoda you have to take a train. In that you are going to use Anyhouse Vika only. And if you normally go to Oishi Park or Kawaguchi. If you are going to Kawaguchi. You will get many suggestions to take a day pass. But we personally felt that day pass was a bit of waste. Because if you are going to Oishi Park. You can use Suica directly. There is no need for a day pass. Day pass would be a waste of money. Because it costs around *1500 yen per person. So, I would suggest that you use Suika only at that time. Next thing would be a trip to Amano Hashidate. If you are planning to go to Amano Hashidate. Then apart from your Kansai Hiroshima Pass. You will have to take high speed train tickets. So, I would suggest that if you are going there. You have to take a Fukushima train from Osaka. And from Fukushima you get the final Amano Hashidate train. So, you have to purchase high speed train tickets from Fukushima. From the train stations. But you can use your Kansai Hiroshima Pass. In which you can use the local railway Tango Railway. No need to buy the tickets. When you travel to Amano Hashidate. For this second patch of travel. Next would be the navigating the subways. Subways in Tokyo and Osaka can be a bit confusing. So, I would suggest that you use Google Maps. Whatever you have to navigate there. Because Google Maps will tell you the details. Which platform it will come on. And which train station you have to sit in. So, try to use Google Maps. And just refer the signs. Which platform number is on which side. See the signs carefully. Because it can be confusing. So, now comes a very important part of this video. Which is the budget breakdown. So, if you want to divide the budgets. So, the biggest budget. If you travel from India. The biggest budget. That would be flight tickets. So, try to book it 2-3 months before. And we have booked the layover tickets. So, it costed us around 84,000. Round trip cost for both of us. And the second most important thing would be the stays. If you want to book the stays. It will cost you around. If we talk about the flight tickets. It will cost you around 5000-7000. Or in fact 4000-6000 per person. On an average. Per night. And the next big spend would be the local transportation. Because you may have to take JR Pass. You may have to take Shinkansen. You may have to use Suica. You may have to book buses. So, JR Pass costed us around 17000 yen. Which converts to almost 10,000 rupees. So, we booked from Tokyo to Osaka. It costed us around 17000 for both of us. And then if you want to go around Suica. It will cost you around 10,000. So, it comes around 50-55,000. It will cost you the transportation cost. And as far as food is concerned. We spent almost 4-5K per day. So, we would also suggest that. According to your taste. You can take your 5-6K budget. And as far as miscellaneous expenses are concerned. So, we kept our budget of 50K. For shopping and all. So, if you talk about the whole trip. For a couple from India. For almost 10-12 days. It will cost you around 3-3.5 lakhs. Accordingly, you can plan your budget. Now, as we had planned. It’s time for the bonus tips. So, I am going to tell you. The apps that you have to keep in your phone. So, first would be the Google Translate. You can use the camera mode of Google Translate. You can download your Japanese language pack. You can find the things written in English. But still, the appliances. You can find them in Japanese. So, you can translate that. You can use the camera mode of Google Translate. It works very well there. Apart from that, there are some applications. Google Maps is one. Which is a must. If you want to travel anywhere. Google Maps will tell you everything. Second. If you are purchasing a JR Pass. And you want to see. From point A to B. If I use JR Pass and go. Which train should I take? For that, you can use Navi Time Japan. So, you will also get this on Google Store. Which you can use to travel. Because it will tell you. If you have your, for example. Kansai Hiroshima Pass. It will be better to take this line. Instead of that line. Because you will save money from Kansai Hiroshima Pass. As we said. If you are vegan or vegetarian. Then the best app comes. Happy Cow. Which you can install. It will tell you. In the area around you. How many vegan restaurants are there. If there is a vegan or vegetarian dish available. We used that. And it was truly a life saver app. Because. Maybe you don’t eat beef, pork or chicken. But it will help you a lot. And all the Indian restaurants are also registered in it. One more important thing is. When you travel in Japan. For the immigration. Visit Japan web is an app. It is very important to register on it. You have to add your details on it. Which flight you are coming from. And after that you can travel. I would suggest you to do it from here. Because anyhow when you are on the immigration line. They will ask you to do this. And you will have to do that register. So, it is better to do it from here. It generates a QR code. You can scan it there. And to be on the safer side. Always carry the printed and the digital copies of your reservations. And always carry your passports. Because wherever you go for shopping. You will have to show your passports there. If you need a tax-free refund. That’s why you have to show your passport. So, we have finally come to the end of our video. And on a very serious note. Japan’s trip was no less than a dream for us. Which we finally did. And it is also very special. Because it marks the start of our travelling checklist. Which is the YouTube channel that we have created. And if you are thinking of going to Japan. Then do watch our travel series.
