Junglia Okinawa a 600,000sqm dinosaur safari park has opened in Japan, and aims to attract some of the “two billion people in Asia” as its target audience.

It is the first large-scale theme park in Okinawa Prefecture and features a tropical jungle, with more thna 30,000 trees planted, and features several outdoor attractions including a dinosaur safari which was developed on the site of a former golf course with an investment of about ¥70 billion (AU$722 million).

The park uses a two-tiered pricing system for residents and overseas visitors with a one-day ticket for adults living in Japan is ¥6,930, around AU$70, with the same ticket for non-residents costing ¥8,800 or AU$90. For children aged 4 to 11, entry costs ¥4,950 (AU$51) for residents and ¥5,940 (AU$61) for those living outside the country.

Among its 22 attractions are a ‘dinosaur chase’ which features an off-road vehicle ride to escape from a Tyrannosaurus rex. There are also hot air balloon rides over the subtropical forest, zip-line rides and a spa with infinity pools offering views over the forest, plus 15 dining venues.

Three adventure sports attractions in the Jungle Extremes area include Titan’s Swing, where you hurtle back and forth over nearby treetops; Sky-End Trekking, a suspension bridge walk 30 metres off the ground with obstacle course-style challenges; and Buggy Voltage, where visitors drive all-terrain vehicles over predefined courses.

Junglia was created by Katana Inc. chief executive officer Tsuyoshi Morioka, who served as an executive at Universal Studios Japan (USJ) in Osaka and was behind its management restructuring.

Okinawa attracts nearly 10 million tourists annually, but most visitors concentrate in the southern part of the island such as Naha.
