Tsunami Warning, Russia Earthquake Live: A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 8.7 hit near the eastern coast of Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula on Tuesday, leading to tsunami alerts in several areas. The alerts have been issued for Alaska’s Aleutian Islands, while Hawaii and Guam were placed under watch as experts study the threat. An alert was also issued for Samalga Pass in Alaska.
Epicentre of earthquake in Russia
As per the US Geological Survey, the earthquake occurred about 85 miles off the Kamchatka Peninsula coast and nearly 12 miles deep. The area is a remote part in Russia which is not populated very much.
Tsunami alerts issued in Japan
Tsunami alerts have also been issued in Japan‘s coastal areas from Hokkaido to Kyushu. Japan’s weather agency said waves up to 3 meters high could hit three areas, including Hokkaido by 10:00 am local time and reach other parts of eastern and southern Japan later in the day. Japan Meteorological Agency has said that the tsunamis “will strike repeatedly.” People are being told to stay away from beaches and rivers, and not to go near the coast to watch the waves.
Seismologist Shinichi Sakai from the University of Tokyo told NHK that even a faraway earthquake can cause a tsunami in Japan if it’s shallow. This earthquake falls into that category. Shallow earthquakes are usually those that happen at a depth of 0 to 70 kilometers. This one was less than 20 kilometers deep. The earthquake happened about 160 miles (250 km) from Hokkaido, which is Japan’s northernmost main island. Japan’s NHK TV said the shaking there was very mild.
Japan is one of the countries most likely to have earthquakes because it lies in the Pacific “Ring of Fire” where many quakes and volcanoes happen.
Tsunami warnings were also issued for the Northern Mariana Islands, including Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan, according to the US Geological Survey. Russia’s regional governor said there have been no reports of injuries so far after the 8.7 magnitude earthquake. However, a kindergarten building was damaged, reported Reuters. Kamchatka Governor Vladimir Solodov, after the quake said this was serious and the strongest one that the region has felt in decades.

Hawaii is under a tsunami warning, while Alaska and parts of the US Pacific coast have tsunami advisories. But what’s the difference between the two? Here’s what it means:
A tsunami warning is more serious. It means there could be dangerous flooding and strong waves along the coast. People are told to leave the area, stay away from the shore, and move to higher ground or inland.

Tsunami Warning Live updates: This earthquake and tsunami are similar to what happened in 1952, says Seismologist from University of Tokyo
Seismologist Sakai Shinichi from the University of Tokyo told Al Jazeera that the recent earthquake and tsunami are similar to a major event that happened in 1952. That earlier earthquake, known as the 1952 Severo-Kurilsk quake, also hit near the Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia’s far east and had caused serious damage and triggered a tsunami. Sakai said that it’s still too early to know how badly Kamchatka has been affected today. He noted that tsunami waves between 20 and 50 centimeters have already been seen in Japan, but those numbers might rise as more data comes in.
He also pointed out that big earthquakes have hit the area near the Kamchatka Peninsula and Kuril Islands before, and tsunamis from those quakes have reached Japan, causing major destruction, just like the one in 1952.
