Takehara flourished as a town known for its salt production and sake brewing. Walking through the streets,
you can see buildings that reflect its former prosperity and enjoy the charming scenery. Especially along the main street, Honmachi Street,
historical houses built between the 18th and 19th centuries stand in a row. Some of these buildings are open to the public, while others are used as restaurants or inns. The various alleys, both large and small, are also an attractive feature. Even today, people continue to live here, preserving the townscape with care. Located in the center of this district, Saiho-ji Temple has a history of over 400 years. Next to the main hall, on a hill, stands Fumeikaku Pavilion, built in 1758. Its unique design is said to be inspired by Kiyomizu-dera Temple in Kyoto. Fumeikaku Pavilion and Saiho-ji Temple are iconic landmarks of Takehara. From here, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the town,
and at sunset, the scenery becomes truly magical. As you walk through the town, you will see bamboo crafts everywhere. These bamboo crafts are a traditional handicraft of Takehara. At the Machinami Bamboo Workshop, you can watch artisans at work
and purchase traditional crafts such as bamboo baskets and ornaments. You can also participate in a workshop
where you can create your own bamboo chopsticks or bamboo accessories. Horikawa is a restaurant specializing in Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki. The building is a renovated soy sauce storehouse that is over 200 years old,
giving it a unique and historic charm. It is a popular restaurant, often with long lines of both locals and tourists. The Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki features layers of cabbage, pork, and noodles,
with a crispy outside and a fluffy inside. A specialty dish called “Takehara-yaki”, made with local sake lees kneaded into the batter,
is a must-try item you can only find here. If you visit Takehara, this is definitely a dish you should try. Another local specialty is Gyohan, a traditional rice dish. Gyohan was originally served as a special dish to welcome guests. Grilled fish is flaked and placed on rice with egg, bamboo shoots, and shrimp,
then topped with broth for a flavorful experience. Take no Chaya Ippuku is the only place in the district that serves this dish. Takehara Preserved Historic District is a town full of charm,
where you can enjoy historical streets and delicious local cuisine. We hope this video helps you experience the beauty of Takehara, even just a little. Thank you for watching the video until the end.
