♨3 Secret Kagoshima Ryokans That Will BLOW YOUR MIND | Ghibli Vibes + Mud Baths! | Solo Travel Guide
this is Anetta Hansen from Onsen with Hansen or Ryokan Meguri where we explore some of the most fascinating ryokans and onsens across Japan today I’m in Kagoshima Prefecture and you can see Sakurajima behind behind me here today I will take you on a journey to some of the most exciting Kirishima area’s onsen ryokans so without further ado let’s go I’m in Kagoshima at the tail end of June right as the rainy season or “tsuyu” is about to wrap up perfect timing for some solo onsen therapy I’ve lined up three ryokans that couldn’t be more different a Studio Ghibli inspired community project a volcanic mud spa that will make your skin glow and a forest hideaway where every meal is a masterpiece over the next minutes we’re exploring active volcanoes ancient shrines and some seriously therapeutic hot springs ready to dive into Kagoshima’s onsen culture? Let’s go Just 15 minutes from the airport Yamanoyu Kaon feels like stumbling into a Studio Ghibli film those red lanterns? Each one represents a local crowdfunder who helped resurrect this abandoned ryokan into a community hub this is what I call machi tsukuri community building at its finest no corporate chains here – just a local with a dream the handmade spirit is everywhere the guard dog at the gate a dedicated room for two resident felines and owners constantly improving the facilities with their own hands it’s that DIY spirit that makes this place special check this out they have a furugiya corner where guests can buy and sell vintage clothing these beautiful kimono are just 500 yen perfect for that authentic onsen experience now here’s something unique the Riverside onsen is actually visible from the road but don’t worry – they provide a Yuamigi – a special bathing wear that lets you soak modestly while still feeling the full therapeutic benefits the sound of flowing water this is what “shinrinyoku” – forest bathing – is all about sometimes the best therapy is the simplest the rooms are modest but spotless and the communal space invite conversation what you’re really paying for here isn’t luxury it’s authenticity and the feeling that you’re supporting something meaningful. As a solo traveler this felt like being welcomed into a community family that’s the true spirit of omotenashi Next morning I caught the ferry to Sakurajima this active volcano is Kagoshima’s pride and a constant reminder of the region’s volcanic power the locals have learned to live with and love their smoking neighbor Driving through Kagoshima is like touring a natural spa look – literally steam vents beside the road this volcanic activity is what makes the region’s onsens so mineral rich/ And therapeutic random waterfall stops; nature’s way of saying slow down and appreciate the journey. At Ebino Kogen the landscape transforms: these windswept Highlands and Misty trees create an otherworldly atmosphere. Perfect for contemplating the power of nature! Kirishima Jingu – one of Japan’s most ancient shrines. The Chosya purification ritual here feels especially meaningful, surrounded by the sacred forest of the Kirishima Mountains. The Shinsuikyo Gorge offers tranquil hiking trails where ancient water and wood create a symphony of Serenity it’s Satoyama – that perfect harmony between humans and nature. The hike to Ohachi Crater was my meditation moment. Launching the drone revealed just how small I was against the volcanic landscape, a humble reminder of nature’s scale. Welcome to Sakura Sakura Onsen, famous throughout Kyushu for one incredible experience. Volcanic mudd baths that will transform your skin. They serve you this mineral rich volcanic mudd, you coat your entire body wait for it to dry then rinse off the results skin so smooth it feels like porcelain This is “Bijinoyu” – beauty hot springs at its finest. Imagine this scene in spring: Thousands of sakura petals drifting around you while you soak. It’s called “Hanami Buro” – flower viewing bath – and it’s pure poetry. I visited at the end of the Tsuyu season but I’m already planning my return during the Sakura season. Some experiences are worth repeating. The ryokan has that nostalgic showa period charm: simple, honest and unpretentious The homestyle dinner won’t win any Michelin stars but it warms the heart. if you are looking for that Instagram worthy mudd bath shot, this is your place but manage expectations – it’s the experience and not the luxury that makes this place special. Seryuso is the crown jewel of Forest Sanctuary where every detail reflects the refined art of Japanese hospitality the rooms are generous but it’s the thoughtful touches that impress. This bookshelf has titles for all ages including children’s books showing they truly welcome families. it’s that attention to Kokoro – heart – that separates good from great. This private rotenburo is onsen perfection. River-facing, completely private, with the sound of flowing water as your soundtrack. this is what the Japanese called “ikigai” pure life purpose. Dinner here is kaiseki artistry. Seasonal Kagoshima ingredients presented with a reverence for both flavor and beauty. Even breakfast maintains this standard. You can taste the chef’s pride in every bite This is local Takumi – craftsmanship – applied to cuisine No shortcuts, no compromises, just passionate dedication to the art of cooking. The service strikes that perfect wa —harmony—between professional and personal. Never stuffy, always heartfelt. For solo travelers this is ideal; you get premium service without feeling awkward about dining alone. The cost-performance? Outstanding for this level of quality So my Kagoshima Onsen wrap up for solo travelers Sakura – Sakura Sakura Onsen – This is a place of incredible mudd bath experience and perfect for sakura season. But go for the novelty, not the accommodation. Next; Yamanoyu gives amazing value, genuine community spirit and that Ghibli castle magic. Perfect for budget conscious travellers who want authentic Japan. Finally, Seiryuso is where ultimate luxury meets nature harmony. Private onsen, exceptional cuisine and service that makes solo travelers feel like VIPs. Each serves a different purpose in your onsen journey. Beginners should start with Kanon for the price and charm, try Sakura Sakura for the unique mudd bath experience and save Seiryuso for when you want to treat yourself to onsen perfection. So I’m back at Kagoshima Airport which means I’ve reached the end of this journey but as you can see I did manage to find a “Ashiyu” which is a nice little footbath where you can soak while waiting for your plane. That’s all for this journey, but I hope that you enjoyed this little glimpse into what Kagoshima has to offer. please don’t forget to like this video and subscribe if you want to stay updated for more ryokan and onsen adventures across Japan
