VLOG | Sendai trip 🇯🇵 Matsushima, Date Masamune spots, day trip to Iwate | May 2025
Hi everyone! Here we are in Sendai!
This was my first time in Sendai and in fact the Tohoku region of Japan
We took the Sendai Airport Access Line train to Sendai station from the airport
We just missed a train so we waited for 20 minutes for the next one
The train had only two carriages…lol
It was a direct train and it took around half an hour to reach Sendai Station
Sendai Station wasn’t that big so it wasn’t too hard to navigate
Our hotel was around 5 minutes from the train station
Daiwa Roynet Hotel Sendai Nishiguchi We decided to save some money and picked a double instead of twin room
It was a little small but otherwise it was quite nice
Out again after getting our makeup etc done
We hadn’t eaten anything since 7 and it was already 3 pm
So we were actually starving
Time to have lunch I guess!
Rikyu They were playing KEIKO’s song in the background!! 😍
I think it was just a radio programme but the coincidence! Feeling lucky! 🥰
Sendai is known as the beef tongue capital of the world
Rikyu is one of the popular chains in Sendai specialising in grilled beef tongue
We ordered the Kiwami set, which is the premium set it came with rice and
ox tail soup
We also ordered the a la carte deep fried oysters
They’re pretty tourist friendly and have an English menu
The oysters were nice – juicy inside and crispy outside
The grilled beef tongue had a crispy-tender texture that was perfectly balanced
牛舌口感爽脆,帶點炭燒的香氣 light yet succulent, with a subtle smoky aroma
A little too salty for me, but on the whole it was amazing indeed! 😋
Even the ox tail soup was delicious
A great first meal in Sendai!
Although it was already May, it was still quite cold in Sendai
Hong Kong was like 30°C when we left
30°C Whereas Sendai was like 15°C to 20°C
So we came to a shopping mall which still had its heaters on lol
My friend had already requested to come to this mall before the trip
Mofusand For the Mofusand shop here hahaha
She had a good time shopping
I also bought something for a colleague 😂
There was a Chiikawa shop on the same floor
I’m not a Chiikawa fan but I bought some keychains for a friend
She likes Usagi and I had to ask her which character is Usagi 😂
There were also lots of clothing and fashion stores here
But we decided to skip them for now since we’d be going to the outlet mall later in
the trip
是說為什麼大家都有喜歡的IP,而我只喜歡⋯天然的熊🐻 Zunda Saryo Back in Sendai station for this iconic edamame shake!
It didn’t taste like edamame…it tasted more like sweet milk
It was rich and creamy so it was actually a good milkshake but it just
didn’t taste…special? lol
We then took the subway (Tozai line) to the next station
我們之後乘地鐵東西線 which is Aoba-dori Ichibancho Station
Fujisaki Fujisaki is an upscale department store with shops like Hermes and Loewe
I came here purely for Cle de Peau since my boss asked me to buy something
for her
Mission accomplished!
We went to Fujisaki really just for that and we came back to Sendai Station
right away lol
Back for more shopping – this time at Loft!
We shopped basically until it closed
Then we had dinner at PARCO 2 – yup there’re two PARCOs here lol
Menme This was a Hokkaido restaurant so there were some bear ornaments 😍
I was thirsty so I ordered a beer – Japanese beer is the best!
We order led the 10 kinds of seafood and egg 11 kinds of seafood rice bowl
We also added the miso soup with Hanasaki crab
The rice bowl was just ¥1,990 and the soup was an additional ¥600 +tax
The price was shocking – in Hong Kong it’d be at least $200??? 😱
The sashimi was good and there was actually meat in the crab too
Super impressed by the food in Sendai on our first day
My head had actually been hurting the whole day – not sure if it was the lack of sleep
or caffeine or both
Anyway I guess I really needed rest so calling it a day!
Day 2 We set the alarm at 9 but I actually got up before 8:15 this day
It was already almost 10 when we actually left the hotel
Since both of us were hungry we decided to have breakfast first
Ootoya Ootoya was the only place we found which opens before 11 and isn’t a coffee chain
Ootoya offers set meal but I didn’t want to eat that much
So I went for an adventurous choice and ordered this protein bowl in the end to
make myself feel healthier lol
The tuna and egg looked nice but it also had okura, natto and yam in it
So it was quite slimy and disgusting in terms of texture
I was also a little worried about the timing
We ended up leaving the restaurant at around 10:50 am
Which means we’d only reach Matsushima at around noon
We were hoping to leave for the outlet at around 5 so time was tight
Anyway let’s see what we get to do in Matsushima while we were there!
We took the JR Senseki Line to Matsushimakaigan station
There’s a Matsushima station but that’s not the closest station
Matsushima Matsushima is known as one of the “Three Views of Japan”
Other than scenic seaside spots, there’re also a number of historical sites
Entsuin Entsuin is a Rinzai Zen Buddhist temple founded in 1647
It serves as the family temple of Date Mitsumune (grandson of the legendary
feudal lord Date Masamune)
Known for its serene rock gardens, seasonal beauty, and deep connection to
the Date clan
寺院以靜謐的枯山水庭園、四季變幻的自然景觀及與伊達家族的深厚淵源聞名 it is often called “Little Kyoto of Tohoku”
被譽為「東北的小京都」 …or at least that’s what DeepSeek says 😂
DeepSeek😂 There were very few tourists on the day so we got to take some nice pictures here!
It actually did remind me of Kyoto, to be fair
Like the temples and Japanese garden around the Nanzenji area
特別是南禪寺一帶的寺廟和庭院 walking in Japanese gardens is always so calming and relaxing
It was much warmer than the previous day and the weather was perfect too!
According to DeepSeek, there’re three highlights in Entsuin
The first one was Sankiden Hall
It was built in 1647 as a mausoleum for Date Mitsumune
In the centre is the statue of Mitsumune dressed in formal costume and mounted
on a white horse
He died at the age of 19 and it was rumoured that he died of poisoning
The picture on the right side door is the oldest Japanese painting of western rose
但他的才智武力對於當時的德川幕府來說可謂是心腹之患 that Hasekura Tsunenaga brought back from a mission between Sendai and Europe
Today Entsuin is known as the Rose Temple and includes a rose garden
We didn’t see any roses though – probably not the right season?
The stone garden near the entrance is called “Garden of Heaven and Earth
Beyond the Clouds”
The “Garden of Heaven” is a Buddhist-style garden inspired by the
Seven Deities Islands of Matsushima Bay
The “Garden of Earth” is themed around the cycle of life
White sand represents Matsushima Bay, while rocks depict the
surrounding mountains
This building is Daihitei, or the Main Hall
It was originally built as a summer retreat pavilion for Date Mitsumune in Edo
In 1647, his father Date Tadamune relocated and reconstructed the structure here
其父忠宗為悼念愛子的早逝於正寶4年(1647年)將其解體,移築於此 to memorialize his beloved son’s premature passing
There’s a heart shaped pond next to Daihitei
Records suggest this garden was relocated here during later renovations
There’re a lot of maple trees in Entsuin
So it must be really pretty in autumn!
Zuiganji Temple The next spot is just around 5 minutes away
Filming and photography aren’t allowed indoors
This is the museum (SEIRYUDEN), which houses the treasures from Zuiganji Temple’s
thousand years of history
Among its exhibits is a Statue of Date Masamune in armor, depicting him in his prime
at the age of 27
Zuiganji began as Empukuji Temple founded by “Jikaku Daishi Enn” in the early
9th century
It gradually declined during the Sengoku period
Date Masamune later rebuilt the temple and the reconstruction completed in 1609
He sought wood from Kumano, Kishu, known as the “Pure Land” since the
Heian period
本堂所使用的檜木、杉木、櫸木等建材,都是由熊野縣運來的 and invited 130 master craftsmen from the Kinai region
From 1620 to 1622, wall paintings were created to decorate each room of
the main building
It was a shame that we couldn’t take photos in the building
例如位於本堂中心,舉行法會的「室中」所裝飾著的門繪是孔雀圖 because those wall paintings were really pretty
Matsushima is a touristy seaside town so there’re lots of souvenir shops
The souvenir shops sell more or less the same stuff but the prices are different
in some shops lol
We passed by this shop which my friend said was famous
Matsukama Sohonten I didn’t know about this place at all beforehand
But my friend this place is apparently famous
I didn’t even know what this was as I was grilling it lol
I’m googling it now and it was actually a kamaboko fishcake
Accorinding to online sources, it is a popular local dish and experience enjoyed by
10,000 visitors each year
This shop offers a grill it yourself experience which takes around 10 minutes
While it tasted nothing special (just a normal fish cake)
I think it’s worth a try if you have some time for it – I think it costs ¥300?
We should set up a stall in Cheung Chau and let people grill their own sausages –
we could charge more than an actual grilled sausage lol
That actually sounds like a viable business idea? lol
My friend is a history fan so she wanted to visit the Date Masamume
History Museum
However there was an admission fee (¥1,000 I think?)
1,000? She thought it wasn’t worth it so we didn’t go in in the end
A “must do” in Matsushima is the ferry cruise which would allow you to see the
outlying islands up close
But each cruise takes 50 minutes, which seemed too long to us
Also the reviews were kind of mixed…
Therefore we decided not to go on the cruise
Fukuurabashi Bridge The red 252m-long bridge which leads to Fukuurajima Island is called Fukuurabashi
According to the signs in Matsushima, it is nicknamed “Deai bashi” (encounter bridge)
又叫「相遇橋」或「邂逅橋」(「出会い橋」) as you might just meet a special person as you cross
So is it like a dating app of the ancient days? lol
Anyway we didn’t meet anyone there 😂
Fukuurajima Island Fukuurabashi Bridge leads to Fukuurajima Island
福浦橋的另一端就是福浦島 a prefectural park featuring more than 300 species of plants and flowers
It holds a small temple “Bentendo,” as well as observation platforms
But we didn’t want to hike so we only stayed on the island for a short while
Before returning to the Main Street of Matsushima for lunch!
Unama Ishidaya It was already almost 3 which was why the restaurant was basically empty
We picked this place because we can order oysters one by one
Why did you order coffee with grilled oysters? lollll
I was experiencing caffeine withdrawal and my head was actually aching
the whole day 🥲
So I needed the coffee badly 😂
The oyster was big and not fishy but imo it wasn’t juicy enough
But oysters is like a must eat on Matsushima so just ticking that off our to do list lol
More sightseeing after lunch (or afternoon tea?)
Godaido Godaido is a symbol of Matsushima
First founded in 807 and reconstructed by Date Matsumune in 1604
It’s the oldest Momoyama style building in northeastern Japan
The statues of the Five Great Wisdom Kings were once enshrined here
The original statues are now housed in the Zuiganji Temple Museum
And they’re only put on exhibit once every thirty-three years
The hall was once painted bright red, but the paint has worn off
The red bridges connecting the island to the shore are called “sukashibashi”
The gaps between the boards are deliberate
So that the worshippers would concentrate when they cross the bridges
Made a brief stop at a souvenir shop as my friend wanted to buy some
Sanrio related goods
She was also craving ice cream so she bought a matcha flavoured one here
Off we go to some of the last spots of the day!
Kanrantei Tea House This tea house was originally built in Kyoto by Toyotomi Hideyoshi and he gave it to
Date Masamune
Kanrantei means “place to view ripples on water”
As Date’s son moved it to its current location
Which overlooks Matsushima Bay
The tea house has two rooms
They used to house the feudal lords’ wives, visiting princesses and envoys
of the shogun
Nowadays they serve tea in one of the rooms to visitors
So visitors can watch the beautiful Matsushima Bay while enjoying their tea
Unfortunately it was already past the time for last order when we arrived
So all we got to see was the Matsushima Museum
Which is quite small
Not very interesting to us unfortunately…
Took a video of us waving our tickets before leaving!
Finally heading to our last stop of the day!
It’s called Matsushima Rikyu, so we thought it’s some kind of palace
Surprised to find it’s actually a modern building
Clearly we didn’t do our research properly lol
Matsushima Rikyu Matsushima is known as one of Japan’s three most scenic views
松島與京都府的「天橋立」和廣島縣的「宮島」並稱為「日本三景」 is dotted by over 200 small islands covered by pine trees
There are a number of viewpoints which allow visitors to see the islands scattered
in the ocean
Which is the iconic view of Matsushima I saw on magazines
But those viewpoints are generally quite far away – at least for us as we’re
quite unfit lol
Matsushima Rikyu offers a higher viewpoint than most places along the bay
Which was why we decided to pay ¥400 to come in
Its rooftop does offer a better view of the bay than the other attractions we visited!
Matsushima Rikyu is really a sightseeing complex with some shops and restaurants
We skipped all of those and came straight to the garden
Matsushima Rikyu is a homage to Matsushima Park Hotel, built in 1913
It was the first resort hotel built in the Tohoku Area
It actually survived WWII, but was burnt down in 1969
Matsushima Rikyu also has the only ten-sided, three-story pagoda in Japan
We found this place to be surprisingly good for pictures
And we spent quite a lot of time taking pictures and videos here
The ¥400 admission fee was totally worth it lol
As the sun was setting it was time to leave Matsushima
I really recommend coming to Matsushima for a day trip!
It’s easily accessible – there’re direct trains from Sendai Station
And most of the attractions within Matsushima are within walking distance
With the attractions being so close to each other, we could visit a lot of spots in
a day without feeling rushed
Matsushima is a very chill seaside vacation town
In a way Matsushima is a little like a more refined version Cheung Chau and
Sai Kung, and it isn’t too commercialised
I also appreciate that it has a fair share of historical, cultural and natural scenic spots
After leaving Matsushima, we weren’t going back to Sendai Station just yet
Instead, we got off at a station called Nakanosakae
Because, if you remember what I said earlier, we wanted to go to the outlet
to shop!
The outlet mall is around 15 minutes away from the train station on foot
Mitsui Outlet Park Sendai Port This outlet mall boasts itself to be the largest outlet in Tohoku
There aren’t really luxury brands here
話是這麼說,但主要都是一些本地日本品牌啦 but there are local brands like Snidel and Beams
We didn’t want to walk back to the train station in the dark
Luckily we found that there was Uber! 🤩
It took us around ¥4,000 to get back to our hotel, which we felt was reasonable
given how tired we were
Then it was dinner time!
Tanya Zenjiro Zenjiro is another famous restaurant chain in Sendai which specialises in beef tongue
They have numerous locations in the city and this one was right next to our hotel lol
Their beef tongue was charcoal grilled so the restaurant smelled amazing
We ordered the standard set this time
As usual the set came with oxtail soup
We also ordered some side dishes from the a la carte menu, such as this tamagoyaki
Its portion way exceeded our expectation 😂
I think in terms of texture, Rikyu was slightly crispier
口感方面我覺得利久的牛舌更爽脆一點 but tbh the beef tongue at the two restaurants were very similar
Also it was only after the dinner that we learnt
不過我們後來才發現原來善治郎最出名的是超厚切的「上撰極厚真中たん定食」 the best known dish here was actually the Premium Extra-Thick Center-Cut
Beef Tongue 🙈
The other side dish we ordered was a dessert
It was an iconic Sendai dish called Zunda mochi
It’s basically mochi coated with sweetened mashed edamame
It wasn’t too sweet and I quite liked it!
The day was far from over – we learnt that Don Quixote closes at 2 am
So we went for some late night shopping and stayed till almost midnight lol
There was a gaming arcade store right opposite of Donki
I suck at claw machines but my friend is experienced and wanted to check them out
She picked this Mofusand one
She said she had tried to get this series several times in Hong Kong
But she always failed to get her favourite, which is the green one 🙈
Guess how it went this time?
She finally succeeded and brought it home!!! 🎉
Day 3 This day started with me being extra dumb
Planned to wake up at 8:15 am but I misread the clock and woke up over
an hour early 🤦🏻♀️
So I decided to go for some solo cafe hopping!
It was actually so early that the coffee shops I wanted to try weren’t even
open yet lol
So I just walked around the area
All the shops were still closed except coffee chains
This is the cafe which I bookmarked and it opens at 8
在谷歌地圖上看見有些看起來不錯的咖啡店,正好可以去看看! ill I was one of the first customers
But it got slowly filled up and a few of the customers looked like regulars
But around half of them looked like they were here for Instagram (like me lol)
I ordered a latte and they had a half price offer between 8 to 9 on weekdays
So it was just ¥310! 😮
Like most Japanese latte the coffee tasted mild but the milk was very rich
and creamy
I didn’t even remember to put the batteries (charging overnight) back into my camera
So I had to film with my phone
Luckily I brought my iPad along so I got something to kill time with
Left after around 40 minutes because there was another coffee shop I wanted to try
It’s located in the Sendai Morning Market
My friend and I planned to visit Morning Market for breakfast this morning
Checking if there’s good place for breakfast at the same time haha
It took me a bit of time to find the coffee shop
Turns out it was hidden behind some stalls
110 coffee This is the only coffee shop in Sendai Morning Market
It has rather good ratings on Google
I ordered the light roast Ethiopia hand drip coffee suggested by someone on Google
It was a little fruity but not too acidic
Better than the other rather mild and bland black coffee I had during this trip 😂
I wasn’t aware there was a bakery here!? It’s called “Marmo”
But since I’d be eating breakfast with my friend, I didn’t buy any bread here
After meeting up with my friend at the hotel (which was just across the street)
We were back at Sendai Morning Market!
Sendai Morning Market is quite small and it doesn’t have that many stalls and
restaurants
So we decided to grab breakfast elsewhere
Mitsumoto Coffee We picked this coffee shop basically because they use pretty coffee cups 😂
I already had enough coffee for the day so I ordered hot tea instead
The coffee shop has a bakery section
But we didn’t try the bread
Instead we ordered the toast set – in fact this is my favourite sort of
Japanese breakfast 🥰
The toast here was a little disappointing though – it wasn’t crispy enough
Still I loved how thick and fluffy it was ☺️
We went to Sendai Station after breakfast to catch the bus
Loople Sendai is the City Loop Bus goes in a loop through the tourist spots in Sendai
我們這天會乘搭「Loople仙台」觀光巴士遊覽仙台 👩🏻: It looks like a Disney bus!
There’s a day pass so if you buy that it’d be like a hop on hop off bus
Since we were thinking we might take the taxi towards the end of the day
例如在經過東北大學時有提到魯迅曾在那裡唸書 we didn’t buy the day pass
Osaki Hachimangu Shrine We followed ChatGPT’s advice and visited Osaki Hachimangu Shrine first
It’s actually one of the last stops along the route of Loople Sendai
It’s a bad idea to come here first – I’ll explain why later
Osaki Hachimangu Shrine enshrines three Japanese emperors
It was first founded in in Iwate Prefecture in AD801
During the Muromachi period (1336 – 1573), it was moved to the current Osaki city,
which is in Miyagi Prefecture to the north of Sendai
It was none other than Date Masamune who built it here in 1607
Found some chickens here
Am I the only one who’s concerned if these chickens would get killed for some
kind of ritual?
We checked out some of the “Ema” plaques where people write their wishes
To my surprised a lot of them were about idols and celebrities
Particularly Yuzuru Hanyu, the figure skater
I didn’t realise he’s from Sendai hahaha
As we left the shrine, we realised our mistake
We shouldn’t have come to Osaki Hachimangu Shrine
Since the Loople bus only goes one way, so it’d just take us back to Sendai Station…
Fortunately since it goes in a loop, we didn’t have to get off the bus at Sendai Station
But we did have to wait for a while on the bus before it started the new loop
Lesson: we should use our own brains instead of relying on AI entirely 😅
So far we had spent more time on the bus than sightseeing…😂
We got off the bus at Zuihoden Mausoleum
We were quite worried at first because based on what my friend read online
We had to walk 20 minutes up the stairs
Luckily it turned out to be more like a 5 to 10 minute climb
The steps weren’t steep and the weather was nice
So it wasn’t hard even for people as unfit as us lol
Zuihoden Mausoleum A little more in Date Masamune since basically all sightseeing spots in Sendai
relate to him 😂
He was one of the famous warlords who lived from the later part of the warring era
through the Edo period
BASARA》 In the days when days when Toyotomi Hideyoshi and Tokugawa leyasu
respectively held power
He was nicknamed the “One-Eyed Dragon of Ōshū” as he lost an eye due
to smallpox
Tbh I only knew him from Sengoku Basara…he’s the blue guy right? 😂😅
In 1636, when Date Masamune was 70 years old
瑞鳳殿是供奉伊達政宗的靈廟 he ordered that this mausoleum be built as one of his dying requests
In the following year, Zuihoden was built and it became Date’s final resting place
In 1945 during the World War Il air-raids, Zuihoden was completely destroyed
The current building was reconstructed in 1979 and renovated in 2001
I guess that explains why the paints are still so vibrant and colourful
I almost left through the entrance if my friend didn’t stop me
There’re actually two more mausoleums here
Kansenden is the mausoleum of Date Tadamune,
Date Masamune’s son who succeeded his father as the lord of the Sendai domain
Tadamune passed away at Sendai Castle at age 60 in 1658
Kansenden was also destroyed during WWII and was rebuilt in 1985
The last mausoleum was that of Date Tsunamune, the third lord of Sendai, and
it’s called “Zennoden”
Tsumamune rules from the age of 19 for around 2 years
這位藩主19歲開始執政 until the Shogunate forced him to retire
After visiting Zuihoden it was time for lunch!
Godzillaya There were only two restaurants on this street and the other one is an
Italian restaurant
We wanted Japanese food so we picked this one
Apparently Kimura Takuya was here for a TV show!
I don’t understand why the TV show had to arrange him to come all the way to
Sendai just for Okinawa noodles 😂
Anyway, the restaurant had a small menu and all items were basically sold out
except the noodles
I added a lot of this chilli sauce which had awamori, which is Okinawan liquor
distilled from rice or millet, in it
It tasted more alcoholic than spicy lol
There wasn’t anything special about the noodles but the pork cartilage was
pretty good
Also the owner was super nice and welcoming! 🥰
We marginally missed the Loople bus when we left and had to wait for 20 minutes 🙈
So tip: check the schedule at the bus stop beforehand
Anyway, here we are at the next and last sightseeing spot of the day!
Sendai Castle (Aoba Castle) Sendai Castle was built over 400 years ago by Date Masamune
It’s nicknamed “Aoba Castle” because it’s built on Mount Aoba
Today the castle grounds offers a great view of the city of Sendai
Online sources say the core stretches to the Pacific Ocean but we didn’t see it
on the day
The castle was destroyed repeatedly by earthquakes and fires
And later destroyed completely by the bombing of Sendai during WWII
Now this is all that’s left of Ohirona, one of Sendal Castle’s main buildings
剩餘的建築也在仙台大空襲中被燒毀,因此現時只剩下遺跡 scale model of the castle and computer graphics reproduction of the castle view
at the Aoba Castle Museum
But we left without visiting the museum
We managed to catch the last Loople bus
And look…we were repeating where we had already been to in the morning,
all thanks to ChatGPT 🙂
托ChatGPT的福,我們又回到今天的第一個景點了,正式繞了超過一圈😑 We didn’t ride all the way back to Sendai Station though
Instead, we got off at Jozenji-dori Ave
This avenue is also a famous sightseeing spot as it’s lined with zelkova trees and is a
symbol of Sendai, the City of Trees
We got off here because I wanted to go to Mitsukoshi for some makeup stuff
Do not recommend going to Mitsukoshi for clothes though as their style is rather…
mature
We also shopped at drug stores
As my friend is looking for some anti obesity medicine for a friend
We didn’t hop back on the Loople bus after shopping
We took the subway instead
Back at PARCO at Sendai Station for more shopping!
My friend did buy quite a lot but I controlled myself this time and only bought a bit
more makeup stuff lol
The problem we had after shopping was where to have dinner
My friend wanted to have sukiyaki and we found a sukiyaki restaurant that’s like
3 stops away by subway
In case they were full, we went back to the hotel and asked the staff to call and
check for us
It was already pretty close to their last order time so we had to rush
The effort we made for sukiyaki dinner 😂
Sukiyaki Kappou Katou This restaurant is operated by a long standing Sendai beef butcher
It may look humble but it was actually recognized by the Michelin Guide in 2017
It also has a 3.46 rating on Tabelog, which is quite high
We ordered the Sendai beef sukiyaki tenderloin dinner set
There were five dishes and these were the appetisers
Then there was sashimi
The appetisers were average but I did like the sashimi
This restaurant boasts that they provide “High-Quality Meat at Fair Prices Through
Direct Sourcing from Thier Butcher Shop”
They also claim to offer the unique experience of the moist and tender
A5 Sendai beef filet in sukiyaki
Not quite sure if it’s actually “unique”, but I must say it was surprisingly hard to find
a sukiyaki restaurant in Sendai
It seems like Yakiniku is way more popular
This was in fact the only restaurant we managed to find which specialises in sukiyaki
Though based on their Tabelog page, they also offer shabu-shabu and steak
My friend, who loves sukiyaki, said this is Kanto style sukiyaki, which would mix
all the ingredients
For Kansai style sukiyaki, they’d cook the beef and veggies separately so it
takes longer
Sendai is on the east side of Japan, so I guess it makes sense for them to go for
the Kanto style 😂
After the dinner we could understand why Sendai beef isn’t that well known
It wasn’t that fragrant and tender by Wagyu standards
This set costs ¥13,970 so we expected more
Good thing was it wasn’t that fatty so it wasn’t as greasy as some other
high grade wagyu
We saw some basketball team members leaving the restaurant
The only Sendai basketball team I could find on Google is 86ers
86ers However the people didn’t match the photos we found?
Are the photos too heavily photoshopped or were we face blind or was it
not 86ers? lol
86ers?🤔 We spent most of the dinner discussing where to go the next day
The forecast said it would rain so originally we wanted to go to the outlet
But now that we had already been to the outlet, we had to plan something else
We thought of going to the fox village but it has very mixed reviews
So we decided to go to some scenic sites instead!
Day 4 I didn’t do tax refund for my purchase at SUQQU
So I could use it this day! Aren’t the colours pretty? 😍
The official website says it costs $500 in Hong Kong but it was just
¥7,500 (so around $390) in Japan 😱
Umi no Okite We knew we probably wouldn’t find any decent restaurants at where we
planned to visit
So we decided to have a hefty brunch at Sendai Morning Market
My friend ordered the oyster ramen
Grilled oysters with garlic butter and cheese gratin respectively for sharing
They were huge!!
We didn’t order any drinks so cheers with our oysters!
And this is what I ordered
The premium seafood rice bowl
It was just ¥2,500!!! 😱
Let’s try the oysters first and gosh they were good!
Very juicy and not fishy at all
Both of us preferred the garlic butter ones! 😋
The sashimi in the rice bowl was really good too
Loved the diversity
性價比也都很高 the uni (sea urchin) was creamy and not smelly too! impressed!! 🩷
Went to Sendai Station afterwards
As we were heading to another prefecture for the day!
We were going to a place called Ichinoseki, which is in Iwate Prefecture
Here comes our Shinkansen!
It was the Tohoku Shinkansen, and the train would actually go all the way
to Hokkaido lol
The train ride was just 20 minutes but it costed us over ¥4,000 per person one way…
是說還好去旅行前沒有看Netflix的《新幹線驚爆倒數》 Hope the sites we were visiting today were worth it 🙏
We then switched to the Ofunato line at Ichinoseki
We had a hard time communicating with the train driver
一上車就嘗試問車長買票的安排,但溝通不太順利 anyway we figured out in the end that we pay when we get off instead of
buying a ticket when we board the train
I didn’t see anyway to pay electronically so presumably only cash is accepted
The Ofunato line took us to Geibeikei station in half an hour
This was when we really felt like we were in Japanese countryside
Almost all of the train stations were unmanned and had only a small house on
their platform
According to Google Maps, Geibeikei Gorge is 10 minutes from the train station
on foot
It’s the only sightseeing spot in the area so there were signs everywhere on the way
It was raining as forecasted but the rain was light and it was an easy walk
Geibikei Gorge The main thing to do here is a boat cruise to explore the river and the valley
The site is among the “One Hundred Views of Japan”
However, because of the weather, there were no boat cruise on the day…😱
I guess it was our bad for not checking it beforehand as it was raining
We weren’t the only tourists who came in vain – there were at least 2 other groups
Ah well, let’s just take some pictures and film some clips here by the ticket booth…
It was disappointing that we couldn’t see much here, but we understand that it
couldn’t be helped
The problem was the next train wouldn’t come for another 1.5 hours
Geibeikei is a very small town with hardly any shops or restaurants
We went to a bakery hoping to rest and wait there, but it had no dining in option
We also looked for a taxi but the taxi company was closed and there was
no one in the office
We found an Italian restaurant that was still open so we came
Mamma We wanted to order some cakes at first but they only served pasta
The restaurant actually smelled really good so I did want to try the pasta
But we were still full from our brunch and we didn’t have that much time by then
So we only ordered garlic bread and coffee…
The owner was a very nice lady and she didn’t say much about this but I still felt
sorry about it
Passed by a Family Mart when heading back to the train station
And we found that there was a Sanrio lucky draw!
My friend is a fan so she gave it a go and won some towels!
When we were back at Geibikei station, the rain had basically stopped
This is how rustic this town is…even the signs in the train station were hand
written / drawn
We caught the 3:10 pm train back to Ichinoseki
Doesn’t this scene feel a little Ghibli? haha
They issued to us this little ticket when we got on the train
I think it was meant to be proof of where we boarded the train at
So when we got off, the staff would know how much to charge us
Back at Ichinoseki station! There was another spot in the area which we wanted to
visit
There were hourly buses but we didn’t wait to wait for it
So we took the taxi and it costed us a little more than ¥3,000 for the 20 minute ride
The taxi driver was really nice and told us where to catch the bus to get back to
Ichinoseki station as he dropped us off
Gembikei Gorge The rain had stopped but the ground was still wet
Good thing was we were basically the only tourists here lol (there were people
arriving when we left)
This place is known for “flying dango”
There’s a shop on the other side of the valley and they’d deliver dango in a basket
through this string across the valley
The dango store was unfortunately closed on the day
Not sure if it was because of the rain or if the dango was simply sold out
It would’ve been fun if we could try the Flying Dango
But even without the dango
The scenery here was breathtaking!
Tbh it reminded me a bit of Lynn Canyon in Vancouver
Perhaps because I also visited on a rainy day haha
It must be even prettier on a sunny day
And magnificent in autumn when the trees turn red
On this day it was a little misty so it looked kind of like a Chinese painting? 😍
Unsurprisingly this place is also related to Date Masamune
我還是有興趣再來嚴美溪的,秋天時有紅葉的話肯定美不勝收 who called this one of the two most scenic spots in his domain
The other one was Matsushima btw
On the other side of the road was this Sahara Glass Park
It looks terribly old and a little dodgy
But this hallway is photogenic
There’s a souvenir shop within and it was the only shop opened on the area
on the day
There’s also free parking here for those who visit by car
We had a bit of spare time before the next bus came
There’re actually a couple of hiking trails here but they were too long for us
So we simply came to check out the dango shop – it’s called “Cuckoo Dango”
It’s said that Date Masamune ordered to plant this cherry blossom tree
Do they really have proof for that? 🤔
We took the bus back to Ichinoseki station
Although the weather wasn’t ideal on the day
I really enjoyed the day in the end and I couldn’t believe we managed to visit
both gorges in an afternoon!
Many thanks to my friend who found these spots and planned everything!!
This is when you tell who’s the planner among two INFPs hahaha
We almost missed our Shinkansen back to Sendai
Because we were too into shopping for souvenirs 😂
Just some snacks that Iwate Prefecture is known for
These were Nambu senbei and unlike normal “senbei”, ie Japanese rice cracker
Nanbu senbei are made with wheat
There was a mouthwatering scent in Sendai Station
We think the source might be this!
Beard Papa I know we have Beard Papa too in Hong Kong
But there were some interesting flavours here in Japan!
We bought two cream puffs – this was the time limited Gyokuro tea (high
grade green tea) cream puff
The second cream puff was a Sendai limited flavour – can you guess what flavour
it was?
Edamame! 🫛
Both of us think it was better than the Gyokuro one which was a little bland
Back to the main business ie shopping for souvenirs
Most Sendai souvenirs are edamame themed so the packaging was green
Why do I always buy more than you?!
We did the last bit of shopping of the day in Daiso
Daiso We planned to have dinner at PARCO, but the restaurant we wanted to try

不過這裡的Daiso大概沒大城市的跟得上潮流,沒看見Instagram上推薦的一些新品 chawan So we picked another restaurant in PARCO based on these amazing food models
我們之後去了PARCO吃飯,受這個食物模型吸引,選了這家餐廳 …but the actual food didn’t quite look like the food model lol
That being said it tasted alright
And the dinner was memorable in its own way 😂
We also ordered this DIY matcha set just for fun
There wasn’t anyone to teach us how to make it but there was an instruction sheet
in Japanese
My friend also said she had a class on this when she visited Kyoto, though she
couldn’t remember the details lol
Not sure what was wrong
But our matcha didn’t foam as it should be
一直無法順利起泡 no matter how long and how hard I tried to whisk it
People say this is supposed to be therapeutic and calming
Sorry but I only feel annoyed and pissed off!!???😠
Back to the shopping street after dinner
Not to shop – we were just looking for the subway entrance as it was raining
My friend couldn’t resist checking out the gaming arcade again but she didn’t get
anything this time
Time for some tasting as we got back to the hotel!
Bought this biscuit from the bakery at Geibikei Gorge
It’s supposed to resemble the shape of a giant cliff called Daigeibi-gan
這個的形狀應該是仿照猊鼻溪裡的獅子鼻岩石吧 which we didn’t get to see because we couldn’t get on the boat at Geibikei Gorge 🥺
Day 5 The first thing we did on our last morning to Sendai was – guess what?
For those who guessed shopping – you’re right! 🎉
We went to ABC Mart to buy new sneakers
我們倆都想買新的運動鞋,所以想到ABC Mart看看 and we arrived so early we had to wait for it to open lol
Our flight was at 2 so we didn’t have much time for breakfast / brunch
So we went to a cafe for a quick meal
Not sure what all those people were lining up for…I think it was a shop
called Maruhan?
KAN I was looking forward to the basic Japanese breakfast ie toast set
But when we arrived breakfast time was already over and lunch time had started 🥺
So I ordered a sandwich instead
My friend ordered a pancake haha
This was the first time we came to the east side of Sendai Station
My friend’s friend recommended us to book a hotel on the west side
The east side seemed lively at this hour
But perhaps it was rather quiet at night?
When we took the Sendai Airport Access Line to the airport
We entered the station through an entrance which had no escalators or lifts…
As a result we had to carry our luggage all the way up the stairs
Luckily we had some spare time…
We were hoping to buy some more souvenirs at the airport
But the souvenir shop after security checks was tiny and didn’t have much
So that was our Sendai trip!
I think one of the best things about Sendai is that it isn’t affected by overtourism
The sightseeing spots were all the whole pretty quiet and people were extremely
nice to foreigners
But I think it’d be better if we could drive
The attractions outside of the city are rather scattered so it isn’t easy to get around
with just public transport
Anyway, I had a great time in Sendai and I can’t wait to visit again!
That’s it for this vlog then! See you next time! 👋🏻
My travel vlog for Sendai. It was a fun trip and I’d love to visit again!
