1 Hour, 74 Seats, No Frills? ANA Wings Dash 8-400 Review

ANA or on Nepona Airways is Japan’s largest airline operating a diverse fleet of over 210 aircraft from the giants like the Airbus A380 and the Boeing 787 to the workh horses like the trip 7 767 and 737 ANA flies almost every major type out there including the narrow bodies like the A320 Neo and even turbo props like the -8 Q400. it. With an extensive network that spans both domestic and international routes, ANA widebody fleets gets a lot of attention. But today, we’re switching things up. I’m taking you on a regional hop aboard one of their smallest aircraft, the Bombardier-8 Q400. Let’s find out what’s like flying with ANA on a short hall route. Let’s do this. Welcome to Kagoshima Airport. I’m currently at the observation deck here on the southern Japanese island of Kyushu. Today I’ll be flying with ENA Wings aboard the -8Q400 heading to Osaka Itami. It’s actually my first time taking a regional flight in Japan. So, I’m pretty excited. A quick intro about myself. I’m KT, an aviation enthusiast from Brisbane, Australia. Making trip reports of different airlines and aircraft around the world is a hobby of mine. This video is part of my recent travel series across Korea and Japan. If you’re interested in checking out more of my journeys, feel free to explore the playlist on my channel. [Music] This is the main foyer at Kagoshima Airport. a midsize regional airport that strikes a nice balance. It’s large enough to offer good amenities, yet small enough to be easy to get around. I’ve already shown you the observation deck, which is a great place for plane spotting. You know, it’s a relaxed atmosphere when there’s someone casually playing the piano in the terminal. There’s also plenty of dining spots and souvenir shops to explore. [Music] Once I cleared security and made it airside, I headed over to the ANA regional lounge on the ANA side of the terminal. The lounge is quite spacious with plenty of wide comfy seats. Perfect if you want to relax or even get some work done. [Music] Refreshments were all liquid. Soft drinks, juice, beer, and a couple of whiskey bottles. No hot food, just some packets of rice crackers for snacks. My flight today is ANA546 departing from gate 5 at 11:50 a.m. It’s a short 1 hour and 10-minute hop to Osaka Itami. We’ll be flying on a -8 Q400 operated by ANA Wings, a regional arm of ANA based out of Itami Airport. Their fleet includes the -8 and the Boeing 737-800. [Music] Finally, boarding. First time for everything. I get to hop on a turbo prop via jet bridge, which you don’t see every day. [Music] First impression. Even though most of ANA’s -8 are over 15 years old, this one feels super clean, almost like a brand new plane. I’m in seat 178 today. The -8400 can be configured to fit up to 90 seats in a high density layout, but ANA only has 74 seats across 19 rows. That means there’s a decent amount of leg room, about 31 in. [Music] We’ve just started our push back and as we taxi out, you can spot a China Airlines 737-800 parked at the international gate in the background. Kagoshima doesn’t have many international flights, just a few to places like Taiwan, Hong Kong, China, and Korea. We’ll be taking off from Runway 34, the only runway here at Kagoshima. It’s 3,000 mters long or about 9,800 ft. [Music] [Music] This region is volcanic. So after takeoff, you’re treated to some scenic aerial view of the rugged volcanic landscape. Japan is an island nation. We’re departing Kyushu below us and heading toward Honshu where Osaka is located. [Music] It’s just a drink service on this flight, so I went with the apple juice. Hopping from one island to another. Down below is Shikoku, one of Japan’s main islands as we pass by. [Music] If you’re wondering what the seat on the Dash8 look like, here they are. When it comes to entertainment, there’s the ANA app that you can use on the D8, but there’s no Wi-Fi on board, so you’ll need to download it before you fly. [Music] We’re getting to our destination now. Flying past Osaka Bay down below, part of the Kai region on Japan’s main island of Honu. [Music] We’re now starting our approach into Osaka Itami. Seat belt signs on, so stay buckled up. [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] And we’ve touched down here at Itami airport. This one mainly handles domestic flights for Osaka while Kansai airport across town take care of the international ones. There’s also a third airport in the region, Kobe airport. [Music] Being a short 1-hour domestic flight, there’s not much to review. Basic drink service, no Wi-Fi, but the entertainment app is available if downloaded. Seats were comfortable with decent leg room, and the crew were friendly and professional. These are my ratings based on the experience. [Music] Heat. Heat. [Music] Thanks for watching.
