Cadaqués, España – Walking tour 4K | 🌊😍 El pueblo MÁS BONITO de la costa MEDITERRÁNEA!
Hello everyone, dear friends! 🤗 Welcome to Cadaqués, a small coastal town in Catalonia, northeast Spain, in the province of Girona, very close to the French border. It is located within the “Cap de Creus” Natural Park, a mountainous and rocky area that juts out into the Mediterranean Sea. Look at this dreamy landscape! 💦✨ It is no coincidence that many consider this town the most beautiful on the Mediterranean coast. 😍 You may be wondering why Cadaqués has this special appearance; to understand, we must first know its history . 🤍 The first signs of human settlement in Cadaqués date back to prehistoric times. More than 5,000 years ago! The first communities chose this area for the natural protection offered by the coves and cliffs. 🔥🧉 During the first millennium BC, Cadaqués began to have contact with advanced Mediterranean civilizations. The Phoenicians, expert traders and navigators, established routes along the Costa Brava and exchanged products and knowledge with the local community. 💰 Later, the Greeks left their mark on the Catalan coast by founding colonies such as Empúries, near Cadaqués, from where they spread their culture and architecture. With the arrival of the Romans, the area was integrated into the great Roman Empire. 🏛️ The Romans used these coasts for fishing, trade, and as a strategic point to control the Mediterranean. During the Middle Ages, Cadaqués experienced difficult times due to its location exposed to the sea and isolated by mountains. It was a small town, dedicated to fishing and agriculture, but constantly threatened by attacks from pirates and corsairs, especially Moors and Turks. 🏴☠️🦜 To defend themselves, the inhabitants built walls and watchtowers that warned of possible enemy attacks, essential for their survival. One of the toughest episodes occurred in 1543, when the Ottoman corsair Barbarossa (Baba Aruj) attacked Cadaqués with a fleet of galleys. The town was burned, the church destroyed, and part of the municipal archive was lost in that assault. 🔥 All these attacks forged the town’s resilient character and explain its defensive architecture. 💪 Now we’ll delve into the town! 😊 During the 18th and 19th centuries, Cadaqués grew thanks to the canning industry, especially the production of anchovies. And soap and cork factories also sprang up. 🐟🧼 “Snoopy” doesn’t want to move forward if we’re not all together! 🦊💖 There are so many beautiful details, it’s easy to fall in love with this town! 😍⛵🌟 I’ll soon tell you why there’s so much art…🎨 Towards the end of the 19th century, traditional vine and olive cultivation began to disappear, and the local economy suffered a decline. This led many inhabitants to emigrate, mainly to America, seeking better opportunities in countries like Cuba, Argentina, Mexico, or the United States. The 20th century was the Age of Artists! 🎨 The famous surrealist painter Salvador Dalí chose “Portlligat,” a small cove next to this town, as his residence and place of inspiration. Let’s take a break to visit the Church of Santa María de Cadaqués, located at the highest point of the old town. Now we can see an impressive golden Baroque main altarpiece, dedicated to the Virgin of Hope. As it is a fishing village, there is no shortage of boats. ⛵ The church preserves the essence of community effort: it was financed with contributions from fishermen, even working on holidays. At a time when the sea was both a source of sustenance and a threat, turning to Our Lady of Hope had profound meaning: She represented protection and comfort in times of trouble. 🙏⛵✨ Many families kept images of Our Lady of Hope in their homes, and sailors carried them on board to feel protected on the high seas. 🌊 ✨ The church’s elevated location had symbolic value: Our Lady protected the town from above. I’m already subscribed to this channel! Are you? 💖🤗✨ Getting back to our conversation, we were saying that Salvador Dalí’s presence profoundly shaped the cultural identity of Cadaqués. 🎨 Here, Dalí built an eccentric, labyrinthine house that grew over time, like a true living work of art. 🥚 📍This is Salvador Dalí. Cadaqués became a cultural hub, attracting notable figures such as Pablo Picasso, Marcel Duchamp, Federico García Lorca, René Magritte, André Breton, and Gabriel García Márquez . Right now, we’re walking on “rastell”: sea stones shaped by waves and placed in a herringbone pattern to drain water and prevent slipping. The natural environment of Cadaqués appears in many of Dalí’s works: the rock formations, the reflections in the water, the dramatic skies… Dalí was famous for his striking surrealist paintings that blended reality and dreams with surprising and sometimes strange images. “CAP DE CREUS”: Natural Park. “PORTLLIGAT”: Dalí’s House. Dalí stood out not only for his talent but also for his eccentric personality, which made him a symbol of 20th-century avant-garde art and pop culture. Works such as *The Persistence of Memory*, with its melting clocks, became icons of modern art. 🕥 Here he is! 🎨 Today, his house is a museum open to the public, and remains a place of pilgrimage for art lovers from all over the world. 🌍🥚 As Spain opened up to the outside world during the second half of the 20th century, Cadaqués was gradually discovered as a tourist destination. Now we’ll pass by a book fair; I invite you to actively listen to the young man reading… 👂 Cadaqués is located in Catalonia, and Catalan is spoken here, as it is a co-official language along with Spanish. Furthermore, Catalan is the traditional language of the area and is commonly used in daily life, education, and local administration. ✨👂👂👂✨ Catalan has common roots with Spanish, French, and Italian, but it is a language with its own identity and a rich literary tradition dating back to the Middle Ages. As you can see, today the local economy revolves around cultural tourism, art, and gastronomy. Small galleries, artists’ studios, family-run restaurants, and charming hotels fill the streets, attracting visitors from all over the world. Cadaqués’s seafaring past remains one of the deepest and most authentic roots of its identity. Families had their small boats, the famous “llauts,” which went out to sea every day. You can still see llauts beached on the sand; many have been there for years, some in use, others as living memory. It’s worth noting that unlike other areas of the Costa Brava that succumbed to mass tourism, Cadaqués managed to maintain its essence. The authorities and residents protected the area’s architectural and natural heritage, especially the Cap de Creus Natural Park. Cap de Creus is a protected area that combines rocky cliffs, hidden coves, crystal-clear beaches, and unique geological formations. 🌊🌞🌲🌴 Its natural environment is home to a wide variety of flora and fauna, including species found only in this region, both on land and in the sea. 😮🐣 Friends, everything changes so fast. Until 1910, there wasn’t even a road that reached this town! She’s “Minnie”, if it’s too hot or if she’s tired, I’ll carry her in my arms. She’s always with us, even if you don’t see her walking around. She’s a VIP! 😎 This is the magic of the Costa Brava: mountains, pines, sea, land, and beach… all in the same landscape! 😍🌊🌲 Although such beauty comes at a price, Cadaqués is one of the most expensive towns in Catalonia! 💰💲 A 60 m² apartment costs more than €500,000 if it has a sea view. 🏡 Many houses are inherited between local families and are not for sale at any price. Some historic seafront properties are in the hands of European millionaires, artists, and discreet heirs. A curious thing about Cadaqués is that the rich people wear flip-flops, without makeup, on bikes, or walking barefoot along the promenade. 🌼 Some of the people who look the most bohemian on a bar terrace are bank heirs or millionaire art collectors. 😮 Dear friends, I can only congratulate you and thank you for making it to the end of the walk. A round of applause for you! 😊👏💖 With these beautiful views we say goodbye and we hope to see you on another wonderful walk! 🤗🤩🙌🎁❤🌼 See you soon! 💦🏴☠️🔥💪🧼🎨🕥⛵⚡👂🌊🌲💰💖
