🚠Hakodate, Hokkaido, a Winter Afternoon Walk | Lofi Music

This walk starts from Hakodate Station, passing through the Hakodate Morning Market, Hakodate Meiji-kan, Hachimanzaka, and the Motomachi district, finally taking the ropeway to the summit of Mount Hakodate to overlook the city.

The history of the Motomachi district dates back to the mid-19th century when Hakodate was opened as one of Japan’s first international trade ports. This led to an influx of foreign merchants and cultures, who established residences, churches, and consulates, leaving behind a rich heritage of Western architecture.

Among the most well-known landmarks are the Harris Church, Motomachi Roman Catholic Church, the Old Public Hall of Hakodate Ward, and the Old British Consulate. These buildings are not only symbols of the Motomachi district but also witnesses to Hakodate’s history of opening up to the world. The Harris Church is known for its unique red brick appearance and Gothic architectural style, being one of the oldest Christian-related buildings in Japan. The Motomachi Roman Catholic Church attracts visitors with its onion-shaped dome and lavish interior decorations. The Old British Consulate displays the diplomatic activities of Britain in the Far East during the 19th century, with its elegant architecture and exquisite garden making it a perfect spot for photography. The Old Public Hall of Hakodate Ward is famous for its unique color scheme. The bright yellow and calm light blue create a beautiful contrast that leaves a lasting impression.

Hachimanzaka, along with the night view from Mount Hakodate, is known as one of Hakodate’s most beautiful scenic spots, offering views of Hakodate Bay and the moored Hakodate city Seikan ferry memorial ship “Mashu-maru”.
