A marine university in Tokyo has offered visitors a chance to tour one of its campuses on Marine Day, a Japanese national holiday.

The Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology opened its Etchujima campus in Koto Ward on Monday.

Visitors were allowed to board the Meiji Maru to view the seagoing vessel’s luxurious interior. Emperor Meiji’s voyage on the ship in July 1876 later led to the establishment of Marine Day.

The ship, once used also by high-ranking government officials, is designated by the government as an important cultural property.

One university laboratory demonstrated an experiment to examine the force of water flowing against a ship’s rudder in a tank.

Visitors could also tour a huge freezer space cooled to minus 20 degrees Celsius. On the day of scorching heat, some expressed great surprise upon entering it.

A second-grader said she felt so cold inside and saw hazy vapor rising up.
