Disaster on the Road – GB350 Solo Ride Across Hokkaido, Japan
Day 4 – Leaving Sapporo After days of camping, a real bed felt like luxury. Today, I’m heading to Daisetsuzan National Park, but first,
a detour to see the lavender fields of Farm Tomita. But then—something goes wrong. Whoa! It snapped. One of the seat bag straps… snapped. Wait, seriously? Oh man… Seriously…? This is bad. Of course, the alarm goes off…
while I’m fixing the strap. Is this gonna hold…? Yeah… this isn’t gonna hold. Is it okay? …Nope. Definitely not. Back on the road.
Let’s see what the day brings. Alright. Time to switch gears —
literally and mentally. Wow, this is beautiful. It’s such a long road! Is this a famous road? It’s like it lasts forever! The view is amazing! Made it to Farm Tomita. Still holding together…
Somehow. Rows of color,
painted across the earth. Just flowers, and quiet.
That’s all I needed. Spring water from deep within the land. Hadn’t had
my morning coffee yet.
160 yen. Leaving Farm Tomita,
heading toward Mt. Asahi
in Daisetsuzan National Park. This must be Jet Coaster Road. Do you remember the thrill When we were kids, riding our bikes
To a town we’d never seen Crossing the river, under the bridge It felt like a land untouched
A world unknown wrapped around me Let it roll Let it roll Let it roll The wind decides where I’ll go Jet Coaster Road behind me,
I’m now heading to Mt. Asahi,
with stops at the Blue Pond and Shirahige Falls. Now the bike has changed its form Wheels bigger, engine strong But that childhood rush remains Heading into the unknown
That’s all the drive I ever need Let it roll Let it roll Let it roll Seagull asked me “Where are you flying today?” I smiled and said “I haven’t decided yet.” He laughed and cried
“Me neither, friend!” I said
“The wind will guide us on.” He said “We’re the same, you and I.” Let it roll Let it roll Let it roll No matter where this road may lead All I need is the ride Chasing dreams, chasing freedom Riding wild with open eyes Let it roll Let it roll Let it roll Chasing that endless horizon Wheels spinning, spirits high Let it roll Let it roll Let it roll End of the ride —
Asahidake Ropeway base station Spicy miso chashu ramen
Just what I needed before the climb. Meal ticket: 1,370 yen Round trip: 3,500 yen.
Kinda pricey… but let’s go. Leaving the forest below,
rising into cooler air. At last, face to face with
Mt. Asahi’s peak. Heading to the First Observation Point,
along a muddy, snow-melted trail. It’s late June…
and there’s still snow. It was just 10 minutes…
and I’m already tired. Mount Asahi — 2,291 meters,
an active volcano and
the highest peak in Hokkaido. Only in Japan?
A vending machine
for emergency toilet kits. Heading down from the mountain,
next stop: Taru House, 21st Century Forest. Before heading to Taru House,
a quick stop for gas and groceries. Fuel stop – 1,816 yen Supermarket run – 1,701 yen After a few stops,
finally arrived at Taru House. Here’s what it looks like
on the outside —
Taru House. ¥780 per night. Even the ceiling has character. Inside Taru House —
cozy, compact, and full of charm. My head was insanely itchy.
So I went to the hot spring nearby
— just 100 yen. Back at Taru House for dinner.
That’s it for today. Day 5:
Riding through the wild nature of
northern Hokkaido.
