OSAKA JAPAN – Visiting Osaka Castle, Umeda Sky Building, Dotonbori, Namba Jinja and More

Hey, everyone. I’m Mark from Travelshorts.
That’s my daughter Holly. That’s my son Matthew. And today’s the second day
of our epic Japan trip. And we’re going to be
exploring the city of Osaka. Unfortunately, We’ve woke up.
It’s raining. It’s really misty. And wouldn’t you believe,
one of the first things we have booked for today is an observation tower. So we’re going to rejig our plans a little
bit and change a few things around. Because we were going to start off
at Osaka Castle, then do the Umeda Sky Building, which is the Observation Tower. Then we were going to do some
arcades and some temples and shrines. I think we’re going to do the Castle
and the Observation Tower a little bit later in the day because
hopefully this might clear up. So we don’t want to be walking outside too
much in this rain and especially the mist. So I think the very first thing we’re
going to do because we’re in Namba now, our hotel is the Monterey Grasmere,
right by Namba Station. We’re just going to walk a few minutes
down the road to go to the shrine, which is Namba Jinja. I think it’s eight minutes walk. After we’ve done that,
we see what the weather’s like and try and make our mind up what we’re going to do. Potentially, if it’s still raining,
we might go to some arcades first. So that means we’re going
to go to Denden town. But yeah, when you look out the window
of our hotel, which is a great view up here, we’re on the 28th floor. So Dotonbori is in that direction there. It’s only a few minutes walk from where we
are now, but not really the best going up in Observation Tower in this weather. So we’re at the hotel. We put our waterproof jackets on. We’re going to walk to the shrine now. It should be about eight minutes. And I think it’s that way. Looks like a little Buddhist,
I don’t know, worship area here. Little shrine? All these a wood plaques here behind me,
you can purchase from the building over there and you can write on it any good
wishes you have for the people reading it or just any message in general. It looks like there’s a lot of
English writing on there, so I imagine a lot of tourists come here to do that. The Namba Jinja Shrine was established
to drive away disease, evil spirits, and generally cleanse the people
that made offerings towards it. There’s been a shrine
on this site since 313 AD. I doubt that lion’s head has been here
that long, but it shows that people have been worshipping on this
spot for a very long time. And in fact, the lion head behind
here is meant to swallow up those evil spirits, granting people success
in academic life, job offers, and even examinations. There are a few other
things you can see here. We’ve just toured around everywhere now. I think we’re going to head back. It’s actually stopped raining,
so we’ve taken our waterproof jackets off, so we might go to Osaka Castle now
and save Denden town in the arcade for later in the day. Okay, that was
the Namba Jinja Strine done. We’re now going to head back over
to Namba Station, which is where our hotel is, and catch the Metro or the subway. I’m not sure what they
call it here, actually. Catch the Metro to Osaka Castle. Just missed it. Now, I’m going to assume the way
to the castle is following everybody else that’s walking in this direction. So the castle is about a 12
minute walk from the station. We’re taking our time. It’s actually got a bit warmer now,
so I’ve taken my top off. So has Holly, she’s taking her hoodie off. And I think you can see a lot
of tourists going in this direction. So this is obviously
the way to the castle. Normally, it’s always recommended to go
to these places the moment it opens. So today the opening time was at 9:00 AM,
but obviously because of the weather, we decided We’re going to change our plans. And we’re coming here now
closer to 10:30 in the morning. But we did plan to get
here just before 9:00. So where we are here,
this is Osaka Castle Gardens. It’s quite extensive and it’s actually
free of charge if you want to come to the gardens itself and walk around
and basically see the castle from that stereotypical view where
you see the castle across the moat. We’ve actually purchased tickets
to go inside the the castle today. We’ve done it in advance,
so we beat the queues. I did that online via Klook.com. I think tickets were only
about £3 something each. Very small charge just
to go inside the castle. If you want to pre-book the tickets
yourselves via klook.com. I’ll leave a link in the description
down below where you can do that, or you can scan the QR code
on the screen about here now. If you use my referral code as well,
which is just written here, you will get, I think, 5% off your purchase as well. Looks like you can see where the moat used to be here, but it’s dried up. So the original castle was
built in the 16th century. Over the years, it got
destroyed many times. In fact, after it got rebuilt one time,
it was then struck by lightning and burnt down again. The modern castle you see behind us here
was originally rebuilt in the 1920s. It’s after the First World War. So it is actually a modern reconstruction,
but it is on the original site of the Osaka Castle. If you want to buy tickets on the day,
there’s the back of the line there. It’s a 30-minute wait,
it says on that sign. It goes all the way
around there, whereas, hopefully, all we’ve got to do
is go from here to just by there. Again, if you haven’t pre-purchase your
ticket in advance, that’s the line you’re going to be waiting in. There, It goes all the way over there,
back to the end of there, and double back on itself. We’re in, I I think we only had to line up for what? Five minutes, maybe a little bit less. It definitely pays to buy
your tickets in advance. So starting to climb up now. Got to go to the castle. Going to go direct to the top
floor to begin with, I think. Fifth floor direct in the elevator. We have decided to walk to the top floor
because the queue for the elevator was massive out the door. We’re just going to take our time
and walk up the stairs. Looks like there’s
a baseball field over there. We’ve just come down
from the observation deck. We missed floor seven when we were going
up, went to floor eight for the observation deck.
Now we’ve come back down from floor seven. We didn’t film on floors three or four. There was no filming
or photography allowed. So I respect.
I obviously didn’t film there. I didn’t stop some people with their
cameras taking photos of everything, though. What do you think of that, Holly? Busy. Very busy. So we’re out in the castle. For the money, that was really good value. Like I said, it was only
about £3 something each. And I would recommend, just like I said,
would recommend booking the tickets in advance before you arrive to avoid,
even this morning, that 30 minute line just to buy tickets on the day. You can see the castle behind me here. We decided to walk to the top. If you want to take the lift,
there was a long, long line, although that line is a lot
shorter now that we’ve come down. I think we spent about an hour in there.
What time is it now? It’s actually 12:05. So we spent over an hour in there.
That’s surprising. When you got to the very top floor,
so that was floor eight, it was really, really really busy,
couldn’t really walk properly. It was just really squashed in,
lots and lots of people up there. But I’m glad we did it. Now that it’s a bit clearer, I think we’re
going to go to the Umeda Sky building. So that means we’re going to hop back on
the subway and head towards Umeda Station. I think we’ll just sit by here
for a few more minutes first, though. Catch our breath, it is nice. A bit cooler outside. It was really stuffy in there as well. Each floor had a different theme. So we go on in on floor number 2. Floor 3 and 4, you weren’t allowed to film
on, but it contained paintings and old books and old
manuscripts from the castle’s history. Each floor was about the castle’s history. And then obviously,
floor 8 was the observation deck, so that was obviously the best part. Sit down for a few minutes. I’ll see you soon while
we’re heading to the station. Looks like there’s a triathlon
going on in Osaka today. I don’t know if you can see that,
but there’s a guy with an iguana on a lead taking it for a walk. He’s also got a pram or a push chair
with some owls in it. We’ve made it to the
Osaka Jolken train station. We’re going to get on the Osaka Loop Line,
and I think it’s four stops before we get to the Umeda building
train station to get off there. I think before we go in the building
itself, we might grab some lunch as well. This is the one we want. We’ve just seen some signs for a Capcom
store and a Nintendo store. We’re going to have a look for them
first before we do anything. We just looked at the map
and the Pokémon Centre, the Nintendo shop, and the Capcom shop are on floor 13,
so all the way up. So we’ve done the Capcom store,
we’ve done a Nintendo store, and we’ve done the Pokémon store. What I think we’re going to do now is
go and look for something for lunch. Before we leave the building, though,
we couldn’t resist this floor, floor number 5, is dedicated to pop culture. We’ve just got some gundams
behind us there. Got some KitKats here. We’re going to explore this floor as well. We’ve decided to go to Kura for our lunch. If you are not familiar with what Kura is. It’s a chain of conveyor
belt sushi restaurants. Let’s go and Take a look. Just got to register all
that information on here. We’ve got a ticket. Even though we got the ticket,
it’s estimated wait time is around an hour or an hour and 20 minutes. Rather than sitting by there,
the floor above us here is Namco. Namco is famous, obviously,
for the arcade games that they do. Actually, when I was growing up,
there were lots of Namco arcade games. Namco and Capcom were probably
the main arcade games when I was a kid. It’s right by here. There’s also a bunch of claw machines. We’re going to go in there for about
30 minutes and go back down to wait. We’ve just changed the 1,000-yen notes. We’ve got 10x 100 ¥ coins. Going to see if we can win anything. So we’ve finally been given a table. It took about an hour in the end. So we’re sitting outside. We did go into Namco upstairs,
but after changing our money, there was no actual claw games we wanted to go on. So we just came back downstairs
and sat down for an hour. So this is the Conveer Belt restaurant. We order via this iPad here. So obviously, we selected English. We’re going to start ordering. Would you like to play Bikkura Pon?
Yes. There’s actually a game. The more plates you collect with your
sushi, you put in here and you could potentially win a prize. Okay. You like that? It makes a little bit more typical winning
from podcast, winning one every three times, this one. Shall we I guarantee it. We’re going to pay an additional 10 ¥,
which is not much anyway, is it? It’s like a set of machines.
Yeah. So we’re going to order using a tablet. I think first, shall we
just order Holly’s first? Because we know what
Holly’s going to order. She doesn’t like sushi. We know for a fact that they do… I hope they’re going to do. But yeah, they do spaghetti bolognese. Go on, chicken. Popping chicken. Chicken poppers.
Yeah, popcorn chicken. Okay, popcorn chicken. We’ll order one of them. Do you want one or two lots? I’m not coming to the last one.
I don’t know. It’s not many on there. Should we order one for now? Then we can always order one later. Shall me and Matthew look for Sushi. Matthew is going to see
what he wants first. I’ll let him order, then I’ll order mine. There’s the first part. Go on and click on it. And click order. Holly’s got them for a macaroni
and cheeseburger as well. There’s Holly’s popcorn chicken. Here you go, Holly. Can you get two up for me as well? Well, one, I could say.
Thank you. I think we’re going to start on our sushi. Still more to come,
but this is good to start. Okay, Holly? Holly’s Burger. Here you go, little gift. What’s it like? Here we go.
Getting some more. This is beef and egg. It’s warm as well. Don’t think I’ve ever
had warm sushi before. I think we’re finished now. This is all our plates. Going to try the game to win
some items out of the gachapon. Okay, so what we’re going to do now,
Matthew, is insert plates. We are we going to put that. One, two, three, four, five. Now, we’re going to see
if we win anything. What do you do?
It does it automatically. Oh, I thought it was a game. I think we lost. Seems like it.
Yeah, we lost that one. Yeah, win, zero. Okay, so let’s try again. Let’s see what this one does. Ninja Star, that was us last night. I guess so, yeah.
That we lost again. Okay, so we should win on this
because we’re guaranteed three. Let’s hope these plates do it. Yay.
We won. We won. What did we win? we won. Something from here. There’s something that’s
going to come out. There we go. Holly, do you want to open it? Maybe a magnet? Yeah, maybe a magnet sticker. So this is everything we’ve ordered. So all that came to exactly 5,000 ¥,
which is about £25, which I think for three of us,
for all that food, I think that was quite a good deal. And all the drinks. So time to check out. So we just take this to the register.
and pay. So that was the Kura Sushi,
Conveyor Belt restaurant. I really enjoyed that. All three of us enjoyed that. And even though Holly the Fussy eater
her and she wouldn’t go near any sushi. She had that mac and cheese burger
and also the popcorn chicken. Well, two lots of popcorn
chicken in the end. She really enjoyed that. So any place that Holly enjoys food
is always a bonus, isn’t it, Holly? Okay, so what we’re doing now, we’re going
to finally go to the Umeda Sky Building. It’s a 17 minute walk
from where we are here. Matthew just pointed out as well that it’s
good there for picky eaters as well. So we’re just about to arrive at the Umeda Sky Building. It’s right in front of us here. I bought my tickets for this
attraction today via trip.com What I do for all my attractions is I
check all the main suppliers, usually the attraction directly on their website.
I then go to trip.com, Klook.com, getyourguide.com, and sometimes
Viator.com. I compare all the prices on all of them. And to be honest, trip.com normally comes out the cheapest.
So trip.com had slightly cheaper tickets
for the Umeda Sky Building today. So I purchased them from there. Exactly the same on all the sites. You just get a QR code which you then
scan on the way into the attraction. If you are interested,
I know I say this a lot. If you are interested in getting
your tickets from trip.com for the Umeda Sky Building,
the link is in the description down below. And I’ll also put a QR code on the screen
here that you can scan and go directly to trip.com’s website on the
Umeda Sky Building page. And I guess I got to point out,
I’m not sponsored by trip.com or Klook.com earlier. If I like a service, I will I will recommend them to you guys. I am the last person on the escalator,
nobody behind me. There we go. Should we see which way it goes?
Like that. Yeah. Oh, well done.
It’s a good one. If you’ve ordered your tickets via trip.com Klook, et cetera like that,
you just need to pick it up from the desk there. When we came, there was
absolutely no lines. You just go straight there. They scan your QR code,
and then they give you your tickets. So now let’s go up here. Okay, Holly.
Oh, almost. Hello. It’s not very busy. We made it up to the first
level of the Umeda Sky Building. Great views from here. But this isn’t everything yet. We’ve still got to go up
to the very top shortly. But we’re going to explore this level
first, take some photographs, look at the window, and then go up to the next level. This is on two different levels,
but you don’t need to go on an elevator to get to the very top. That’s what we’re going to do now,
going on to the very top of the roof. Have a look. It looks like it might be
a little bit windy as well. So that’s the escalator that we came up. And when we go back down in a minute,
we’ll be going down on that one. And that spans the two buildings. And so does the circular
structure at the where we are now. It’s a 360-degree walk all
the way around the buildings. It’s actually sunny out to sea, isn’t it? It’s got a ray of light over there. So if you want it,
you can pay extra to get yourself a love lock, a heart lock, I could say,
and get it laser engraved, and then you can leave it up here. We decided not to do that today. I think you have to prepay
in advance as well. I don’t think you could actually do it
on the day, but there’s plenty behind me here. And a big shout out to Leigh and Bex
from the YouTube channel, ABritTravels. We’ve been subscribed to them for a while. We always watch their theme
park videos and travel videos. They came here in October and we watched
their video just a few weeks ago before we came. And then Holly said she’d like to have
a look for their lock, so there it is. So, yeah, I recommend their
channel, ABritTravels. Really good if you like
theme parks and travelling. And there’s Holly holding it up.
She’s the one that found it. Well done, Holly. Oh, do you want a photo of those, Holly? I think Holly wants a photo
of those things there. Let me get the camera out. Do you want them just for those ones?
Those three? Okay. There you go. I think we’ve finished
the new Umeda Sky building. We’ve been to the top,
we’ve been on this floor. We’ve walked around a good two or
three times, taking lots of photos. I think it’s time to go back down those
escalators, down the lift and head to the train station. The plan was to go to Denden town and go
on a lot of claw games and arcade games. But because time has run away with us,
I think because we had a bit of a late start, later than we’d actually planned,
it It’s 5:40 now. We’re going to head back
to the hotel, I think. Just refresh ourselves a little bit,
have a little relax there. Then we’re going to go back to Dotonbori,
which is where we were last night. Because yesterday,
the ferris wheel on Don Quixote was actually closed, and that’s one
of my must-dos for this trip. I want to go on that ferris wheel,
so I’ve got my fingers crossed. It’s going to be open tonight
for us to go on that ferris wheel. We might even go on one of the boat tours
as well along the river, but we’ll see that when we get there. Anyway, we’re going to head towards
the escalators and go back down. See you shortly. Should we have a look in the shop quickly? Not sure if we’re going to get a souvenir
or not, so we’ll have a look what it’s here. Maybe get something that’ll
be Umeda sky building related. That looks a bit like one of our cats. That’s it.
The end of the Umeda Sky Tower. Now it’s time to head down on the lift and catch
the train back to our hotel. We’re back on the ground,
and that’s the view from the ground all the way to the top on the sky deck
or the observation area, I should say. Now that we’re back on the ground,
I thought I’d let you guys know that I’ve created a travel guide to Japan. It contains everywhere we stayed,
places we’ve visited, attractions we’ve been to, tips
and tricks we’ve learned along the way. It’s totally free. You can download it using the link
in the description down below, or you can scan the QR code on the screen now. Like I said, it’s totally free. I won’t even ask you for your email
address or anything like that. I’ve started to say this in my videos now,
but I make these videos for fun, not for profit. So I’ll never ask you guys for any Patreon,
buy me a coffee, super chats or anything like that. I do this because I really like it. I don’t really use it as a grift
to make money from my viewers. So the Travelshorts Guide to Japan,
totally free. Link in the description down below or scan
the QR code here to go straight and download it. That’s my promotional message done. We’ve just passed a couple of cat cafés as
well on the side as we’re walking back to the station. I didn’t film them because personally,
I don’t really agree with that thing. I just try to avoid all that. I just don’t think domestic pets should be
used as a source of entertainment for people to just sit there. They say they’re looked after,
but it can’t be pleasant for the poor animals being stuck in those ones. It looks like they were in glass cases
pretty much, with people just putting their finger through some holes
and touching them, which I imagine they probably do get them
out and they get to stroke them on their laps and stuff, sitting on the floor. But yeah, it’s one of those
things I disagree with. In my opinion.
A foot squared. A foot squared? But that was size of the case? Yeah. Matthew just said the cases they were
in were just a couple of feet squared, so quite small in enclosures for them. The cats, well, I should say
Kitten look very young as well. I don’t think a young kitten or a young
cat should be put in that situation, personally. You want to take them home?
Yeah. Well, we’ve got two already. Too bad.
we can have three Yeah, but our cats won’t understand them,
though, because they speak English, and those cats will probably speak Japanese. Well.
Yeah. Okay, we’re almost
at the train station now. See you on the train. It’s a bit busy, isn’t it? We’ve relaxed in the room
for about 15, 20 minutes. We’re now come back out. It’s 7:20 in the evening. We’re walking over
to the Dotonbori area. I don’t want to stay out too long tonight,
if I’m being completely honest, quite tired. We’ve got an early start tomorrow
to go to Hiroshima on Shinkansen. We’re just going to go
keep our fingers crossed that the ferris wheel on Don Quixote is
working because we couldn’t do that yesterday. We really want to go on it,
get something to eat, and then we’re going to head back
to the hotel and try and have a reasonably early night. We’ve made it to Dotonbori. Let’s find somewhere to eat. Let’s go on that ferris wheel. There’s some good news.
We just spotted it. The ferris wheel is moving, so that’s
where we’re heading for straight away. Here we are in front of the famous
Glico Man behind me here. We were here last night,
but it wasn’t dark when we came yesterday. It’s great to see this
all lit up at night. If you’re not sure what Glico is, first
of all, this is an Osaka institution. This billboard on the wall here. It’s been here for many, many years. If you search for Osaka pictures
in Google Images, probably this and Osaka Castle will come up. If you’re not sure who Glico are and what
they manufacture, they are a confectionery company or confectionery conglomerate
that make quite a lot of sweets. For Westerners, I’d say probably the most
famous brand that they produce is Pockies, those long biscuits dipped in chocolate. We’ve made it to the top of the stairs,
but it looks like it’s still a really big line. It goes all the way down there. Double backs on itself, coming this way,
and then goes back again that way. That’s as far as I can see at the moment. I don’t know if it’s
even further than that. You’re not going to believe this. It’s broken down, and they’re not… They’re getting everybody
to have the line. At least we weren’t on it because people
are trapped on there at the moment. We’re going to have a look around
Don Quixote and see if we can get some little
souvenirs and head back to the room. You can see it there.
It’s not moving at all. You imagine those poor
people right at the top. They might be up there for hours. As you can see, they’re not moving at all. It’s a bit of luck actually that we didn’t
go on it because just imagine if we did go on it and then it got stuck. I am really disappointed that we haven’t
got a chance to go on the ferris wheel, but it’s better to not go on it
and still be able to walk around and going on it and then getting stuck
for about an hour or two. Or maybe even longer, who knows? Anyway, we’re going to try and find
somewhere to eat now, get some snacks. Looks like they’re
livestreaming their cooking. Thank you. What does that taste like, Holly? I have only had the bread so far.
Oh, okay. This was Holly’s favourite food
when we were in China last year. We call it Xi’an burgers. Do it taste anything similar? It does. Next on our list of snacks, tanghulu. There’s one more strawberry on these
than the ones that we had yesterday. Two more.
Two more? Was it? Oh, yeah, there was
only three on yesterday. I think they were a bit
smaller than I thought. Yeah. So these are the same price
and two more strawberries. Good, Holly? So again, Holly’s now had two of her
favourite foods that we I had in China last year. There’s Rou jia Mo,
Xi’an burger or Chinese hamburger, and Tanghulu strawberries. Are you happy? Theres Matthew. And here’s mine because
I had to get one as well. Japan has the best
strawberries in the world. Yeah, I heard that as well. Probably the most expensive
strawberries in the world as well. You get one strawberry
for £20 somewhere in Tokyo. If you come to Japan,
you have to try the tanghulu. We’ve come to the same little arcade with
all the Claw games as we did yesterday. I’ve just changed the 1,000-yen
note for 100-yen coins. I’ve got two. They’ve got four each. Let’s see if we can win
something, shall we? No. I think it purposely drops it, doesn’t it? When it goes to the top.
Yeah. Here is Holly trying I can’t do it.
It doesn’t matter. It’s just a bit of fun, Holly. Yeah, I just feel it’s fine.
It’s fun. Are you sure about?
Yeah. It’s getting closer. Another two that you might get it. That might drag it over, actually.
Yeah. Oh, no. Not fair. I’ll try it again. We’ve just spent all our money,
so that was a 1000 ¥. No luck tonight. We’ll try again another day. Just got our five seconds
of Fame there on the big screen. We’ve just got some fried chicken
and a hot dog sausage from Family Mart. We’re probably going to take
it back to the room to eat. We’ll be there in a few minutes. We’ve made it back to the hotel,
so I think we’re going to end this episode here. If you’ve made it to the end,
thank you so much for watching. It’s really appreciated. If you’re new here, my name’s Mark,
along with my daughter Holly, son Matthew. We make Travel and Theme Park
videos from around the world. Now, here’s Holly with

We start off at our hotel the Hotel Monterey Grasmere Osaka. we then go to the Namba Jinja Shrine (Namba Yasaka Jinja) which is a short walk away. This is a small shrine in the shape of a lion’s head.

After that we get the Subway to Osaka Castle, the castle is one of Japan’s most famous landmarks and played a major role in the unification of Japan during the sixteenth century.

We then go to the Umeda Sky Building but stop at Kura Sushi along the way, Kura Sushi is a chain of conveyor belt Sushi restaurants and we really enjoyed the food there.

The Kuchu Teien Observatory is an observation facility connecting the Tower East and Tower West of the Umeda Sky Building, on the 39th, 40th and rooftop floors. We had a great view from the top and travelling along the escalators was a highlight.

Just like the night before we finish the day in Dotonbori enjoying the sites and street food.

Stay tuned for more daily vlogs from our Epic Japan Trip.

  1. We had a lot of fun exploring Osaka, although the day did not start out as planned we still managed to do almost everything we wanted to. I have written a totally free 56 page Japan Guide Book PDF with all our tips, tricks, best hotels, places to visit and more. you can download it instantly here: https://bit.ly/TravelshortsJapan

  2. Great videos as always. Only one bit of feedback, I would say is turn the noise cancellation on the mic down a bit so we can hear other voices and sounds a bit, other than this amazing as always

  3. Followed you since your epic china trip. Love this Japan videos, as I was from there 3 months ago also. Japan is amazing! We also had so much fun.

  4. Awesome video and information as always. I totally agree that you shouldn’t ask us to buy you a coffee, support you or anything like that, so that you get to travel and we get to watch. Like in the old days, there were no internet, no YouTube and we could travel ourselves with the paper map and that worked out fine. Salute to you!
