【愛知・豊橋】レトロビルさんぽ 水路の上で夏を楽しむ!水上ビルめぐり RETRO Buildings Buit on a CANAL (Aichi JAPAN)
This is “Toyohashi Walking with a Cat”, a channel introduces our recommendations with music on the background. This is the “Rainbow Tower”. It is an object built on top of a Y-shaped pedestrian bridge. From here you can see Toyohashi Station and “Ekimae-odori” (the main street in front of the station). Our destination this time is over there. Let’s go right away♪ This four-pillar object is said to shine with rainbow colors in the light. I would love to see it! We’ll head towards the yellow object. This time, we’ll take a walk around Suijo Building, a group of retro buildings that represent Toyohashi city. The Suijo Building is familiar to locals, but for those who don’t, we’ll give you a quick explanation. Here you can see the “Muro Yosui” (Muro Water Supply Canal). It has been covered up beyond this point and flows under the building in front. The buildings are literally built on water. The 15 buildings that are lined up over the canal for about 800m are collectively known as the “Suijo Building.” The oldest of these buildings was constructed in 1964. They are symbolic retro buildings beloved by locals, but would be difficult to rebuild now. There are many unique shops here, both old and new, and we would like to start by having lunch at one of them. A wonderful shop has opened! It looks like an old bookstore. But we are starving. We’ll come back after lunch. Okay! Let’s move on ♪ The video of the walk scene will be fast-forwarded appropriately. Today, we’ll have a nutritious “eel lunch” to beat the scorching heat. There is another their restaurant in Hamamichi-cho within the city. Smoke rises up! The eels served at this restaurant are from Aichi Prefecture. They grill eels over “binchotan” charcoal from their own eel farms in Isshiki-cho, Nishio City, and Toyohashi City. There are counter seats in a long space resembling an “eel’s bed”. And tables for four are set up in a space surrounded by bamboo that resembles an “eel trap”. It’s as if we have become eels? It has a nice atmosphere. Then, let’s have lunch! If you like, please pause the video and take a look at the menu. You can order from this ticket machine! Only cash is accepted. Hand the meal ticket to the staff. Some of the items are hard to understand, but there is an explanation! They also have take-out bento boxes. “It’s here♪” “Looks yummy♪” Midori is super excited with the “UNAGIYA Set Meal”. It comes with “kabayaki”, “shirayaki” and simmered liver. It looks like this. I’ll start with the “liver soup”. It contains a large piece of liver. It has no unpleasant odor and has a nice bitter taste. Next is the simmered liver. I was delighted to see three soft, plump pieces of liver included. Now it’s time for the main dish, “kabayaki”. It’s shiny and looks delicious. I dipped it in sweet soy-based sauce, and then served it on rice! So happy♡ Delicious. And here is the “Shirayaki”. This is eaten with ginger, wasabi, soy sauce, etc. Table condiments are also available. I tried adding a generous amount of “Kabayaki” on top. As it allows you to compare different eel dishes, this set meal is very satisfying. Next up is “Hitsumabushi.” It looks like this.
I’m sorry, I couldn’t take a photo! The rice container is filled with plenty of “kabayaki”. They’re cut into bite-sized pieces. Place it in a rice bowl, top with condiments, and pour “dashi” over, and eat! Dessert time after the meal ♪ The dessert for this day was “banana pudding.” It was smooth and delicious. Thank you for the meal. Thank you very much, “UNAGIYA”. There is a sign for “Muro Yosui” (Muro Water Supply Canal). Between the buildings there is a bridge with only the railing remaining, reminding us that this is “a building built on a waterway.” To look for signs like this is one of the fun things to do while walking around “Suijo Building” This is the retro cafe we introduced previously. “Muro Yosui” sign again. The “Suijo Building” has arcades, which is helpful in protecting you from both the sun and the rain. However, the arcade ends here for now. National Route 259 runs between here and the next building, so you’ll need to cross on a footbridge or crosswalk. It’s hot here in the blazing sun! There’s another arcade. We’ve arrived at the “Daihou Building”. Next, we’ll introduce you to shops located inside the “Daihou Building”. First off, this café! Let’s have tea time. The interior of the small café has an inorganic feel. The exposed pipes and concrete ceiling are distinctive. So cool & modern! The chairs are transparent and metal-colored. It gives a simple and cool impression. It will help you forget the heat outside. They have ginger syrup. A ginger syrup specialty shop called “TEMTASOBI GINGER” is located next to the cafe. It is also used in these “ginger cookies”. And these are “original stickers” that express the concept of the cafe. Philosophical and profound. Now, let’s have tea time ♪ If you like, please pause the video and take a look at the menu. Here it comes~♪ Two kinds of specialty coffee from “mumei” and “ginger cookies”. The cookies are made using the leftovers from making “ginger syrup”. They have a rough texture with a strong ginger flavor. Now, onto the main coffee. First up is the “iced coffee”. It has a chocolate-like sweetness and depth, and is well-balanced! Next is the “iced cafe latte”. It has a nutty aroma and a mild mouthfeel. Next is the “non-baked cheesecake”. It looks like tiramisu. Now, let’s try it! ♪ It’s fluffy and milky with a light texture. With just the right amount of acidity and gentle sweetness, it’s a dish that goes well with coffee. Finally, when you think of summer, it’s definitely this! “Shaved ice”. “Kinuyo” bean paste is hidden under the ice. The colorless and transparent “Senji syrup” “Ice Azuki” is complete! They use “Misato-Hyoshitsu”, a specialty ice from Mie Prefecture. The mellow coldness? ? I’ve ever experienced. It brings out the delicate flavors of the syrup and bean paste. Thank you for the food. We had a peaceful time. We got some “ginger cookies” as a souvenir. The transparent bag was stylish. Thank you very much, “mumei coffeestand”. Next, we visited this shop that cat lovers will notice. We were attracted by the cat illustration on the sign and the shop name. Opened in February, this shop is run by a hunchbacked owner. The shop is filled with books and small items carefully selected by the owner. The shop also sells original products. It has a rather unique lineup. There are also books with author’s signatures and special bonuses. The second floor of the shop seems to be an event space. Go up this staircase inside the shop. Wow! It’s retro. It’s a space that builds up anticipation. Thank you very much, “nekoze shouten”. Next, let’s take a look at the place next to “nekoze shouten”! This is a fireworks store that has been around since I was a child. They have all kinds of fireworks here! Skyrockets Value packs Sparklers There are lots of handheld fireworks lined up in front of the store. I bought sparklers. Summer memories… Do you have any memorable fireworks? If you do, please let us know in the comments. Thank you very much, “Amano Shouten”. We are back here. An old bookstore opened in February. The store name and address are the same. The store is stocked with books on art, design, fashion, architecture, and other genres, as well as other second-hand and antiquarian books carefully selected by the owner. New books are also added from time to time. We are entranced by the beautifully bound books that look like works of art. The displays scattered throughout the store are so stylish and fun to look at ♪ They also sell items other than books. We were so engrossed that time flew by. We were able to watch the owner at work. Apparently, she wipes the books with a cloth soaked in alcohol to make them clean. Then, she carefully checks each page and wipes the covers as well. It must be a lot of work to turn all of the books into used books. Thank you for letting us watch. We unexpectedly found a great store. We are so happy! Another recommended spot has been added to the “Suijo Building”. Thank you very much, “Old Bookstore E109”. Time flows peacefully here, like the waterway that runs under the building. Souvenirs~♪ “UNAGIYA” Lunch Box (Regular) I’ll do my best this summer too! Maggie too… (laughs) Thank you for watching this video.
