Escape Tokyo: Discover Atami – The perfect beach day trip from Tokyo
Hey there cutie. What you barking at? [Applause] You are. Welcome to Atami here. Okay, let’s head for the coast. Let’s go. Atami is also well connected by train from Tokyo. It is about 110 km away southwest, 50 minutes by fast train. [Music] So, first impressions of the beach, Gav? Well, it’s just good to get to the coast, isn’t it? But there’s tsunami warning signs everywhere. Yeah, that that’ll um make you stop and think a bit, won’t it? This is us stopping and thinking a bit. Yeah, a bit dangerous, bit scary, maybe. Glad we didn’t stay there. We thought about it and looking the other way. Yeah. You know what? A dummy seems very off the tourist map, which I like a lot. More air for everybody. Yeah, it really does pay to sort of go off- grid and do your own research and Oh, that’s probably what you’re doing by watching this video. Hi, welcome. So, what do we know about Atami? Apparently, Atami literally means hot ocean. About 35,000 people live in Atami, and it’s a beachy hot springs town that was very popular in the 80s. Can you tell? near the train station. The vibe was pumping. Seems like everyone’s here nice and elevated away from tsunami risks. Are they tunami proof up here again? I don’t know. Maybe. Let’s hope so. [Music] Okay. Nice to be here. What are we eating? This place looks good. Let’s try that. M. I want it. I’m going to go get it. Very high-end custard. Mhm. M. And they give you a little caramel sauce. And it’s so delicious. Oh my god. So delicious. Because there are so many highrises. It definitely looks a lot more than 35,000 people live here, doesn’t it? What? What are they? Abandoned anchors. What are these things? I genuinely hope someone tells us in the comments section. Yeah, please let us know. Yeah. Hey, this is us in line for the tickets for the ropeway finicular thing. [Music] [Music] I must say Kichiwa. Wow, good views from up here. Now, I did see a sex amusement park. Should we go? Uh, okay then. Let’s go. [Music] [Music] Sorry. Uh-huh. Was it sexy and amusing for you? It was amusing. We weren’t allowed to take photos or video on most of it, so I guess we’re just going to have to describe it to you. It was um bizarre. Really bizarre. Really bizarre. Really bizarre. Would you recommend it? If you’re here, yes, might as well. But to come just for that, no. Exactly. You can just imagine. Very 80s vibe. Very naughty, very saucy, and absolutely ridiculous. Moving on. Very helpful western menu, right? So, this is Atami Castle, which is not like an ancient castle or anything. More of a tourist attraction built in the what, late 50s. Who cares? Apparently was featured in one of the Godzilla movies, though. Anyway, let’s go back to the beach. Go. What’s tonight? So, you may be wondering, tsunami evacuation zone, 5 m that way. What do you reckon? Take a look. Up in the mountain. Yeah, that would just about do it, wouldn’t it? Do you actually know what to do in a tsunami? Well, one thing’s for sure. I wouldn’t be looking for advice on a YouTube video like this. Basically, get to the high ground as far inland as possible. The hell away from the beach, obviously. Do you know what not to do in a tsunami? Sit around watching YouTube videos in a tummy. panic and get your surf boat out and start surfing the tsunami waves. So, your overall thoughts on Atami, please. Honestly, compared to other beaches around the world, it’s not like the most spectacular place ever, but it was good to see the coast. And there was some fun stuff to do. And the cable car to the top of the hill, totally worth doing. And the sex amusement park up there was very odd, very Japanese. I’m glad we came just for that cuz it was so weird. I’m still glad we came here. I really enjoyed the burger, the custard thing, and every single customer service interaction that we’ve had was awesome over there. [Music] [Music] And uh we’ll have another video up soon, won’t we? We will.
