Takashimaya’s Hokkaido Fair brings Japan to your door again

It’s no secret that everyone and their mother is planning a flight to Japan, but for us cash-strapped lads, Takashimaya’s Hokkaido Fair is the next best thing this Jul.

Nothing depicts the natural abundance of Hokkaido island quite like fresh seafood. Wanya Seafood Bento brings their loaded bowls right to Singapore.

Feast like kings with the Tomakomai (S$46) bento. Before you groan at the price tag, take a look at the creamy uni — or sea urchin — covering the rice below. Nicknamed the butter of the sea, that golden flesh turns any meal into an indulgent affair.

Rich, sweet and packed with umami, these fleshy cuts of crab will haunt your dreams after you eat this bento. Yes, real crab, not any of that imitation fish paste!

You could also opt for the Monbetsu (S$25) bento topped with slices of Arctic Surf Clam, scallop and more. With shredded crab and pearls of translucent salmon roe, every bite of this bento is a different flavour.

If you’re still looking for that seafood-induced high, Hokkaido Dosanko Plaza​ has got your back. The Rice-stuffed Squid​ (S$8.80) is vacuum-sealed for freshness, and can be brought home to enjoy.

Of course, Hokkaido is also known for their dairy products. The Marusei Butter Sandwich (S$14 for 5) from Rokkatei has been around since the company’s rebranding in 1977.

Each sandwich cookie is perfectly buttery, yet light enough to balance against the richness of the white chocolate, cream and raisins within. I’d say that these are perfect as gifts, but you and I both know it won’t last the weekend in your fridge!
