This Japanese seaside resort is only 45 minutes from Tokyo, but many international tourists overlook it. Welcome to Atami, a retro hot spring town that almost went bankrupt. It’s the perfect day trip if you’re sick of Tokyo, but tight on time. I bought my Shinkansen or bullet train tickets on Cluke because cues at the station ticket office can be unpredictable. The buildings by the beach are a bit faded from salty ocean air, which is part of their charm. It’s also a popular place to go fishing. Most of my time was spent exploring the side streets that were completely empty and broadcasting Spongebob style Hawaiian music. The city is also known for its seven natural hot springs where some people cook eggs. Public foot baths are quite common in on hands and are a good way to soothe sore muscles after walking a lot. Atami is one of my favorite beach getaways from Tokyo and it’s actually faster to reach than the better-known Kamakura on shinkansen/bullet train!
