Tokyo police have arrested a 28-year-old man for allegedly obstructing the operations of a local hotel by making fake reservations for 258 rooms for the same day.
The Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department arrested Sanuki Junki, a resident of Izumo City in Shimane Prefecture. Sanuki worked until last month as a clinical laboratory technician at Shimane University Hospital.
Using false names, police say the suspect appears to have repeatedly obstructed the hotel’s business on other days as well. Police say records of more than 580 bogus room reservations have been found on Sanuki’s smartphone and elsewhere. The bookings were worth more than 17 million yen, or about 114,000 dollars.
Police said 258 of these reservations totaling about 49,000 dollars were allegedly booked with a hotel in Tokyo’s Ota Ward in December. Sanuki is suspected of offenses including the fraudulent obstruction of business.
The department said it began investigating the case after being contacted by the hotel, which reported that the reservations caused it damage and were made with the intention to harass.
The reservations are said to have been made using false names and different email addresses. Sanuki has reportedly remained silent during questioning.
