Things To Do In Kyoto – Uji and Byodo-In Temple – Home of Matcha Green Tea 🍵🫖 – Japan Vlog 2024 🇯🇵
[Music] Welcome back fellow travellers. We’ve just
left the Nintendo Museum which was amazing! You can check that out in the previous video. We’re currently
in Uji which is just outside of Kyoto. It’s known as the birthplace of matcha green tea and has
been producing matcha since the 13th century. It’s also home to Byodo-in, one of Japan’s most famous
temples. It’s only a short walk from the museum – so we’re going to head there now but if you’re coming
from Kyoto this is how you’d get here from Kyoto Station You would get the D line towards Nara and get
off at Uji – it takes about half an hour from the train station you want
to head towards Uji Bridge which crosses the Uji River. There’s a statue
near the bridge of Murasaki Shikibu she’s best known as the author of
the Tale of Genji which is widely considered to be one of the world’s first
novels written in the early 11th century [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] The matcha tea here is considered to be superior
quality as they’ve been cultivating it for centuries and that’s the reason for its vibrant
colour. They’re clearly obsessed – but in a good way even the street food is matcha themed – from the
Ice cream, Gyoza, Takoyaki even the beer! “arigato gozaimasu” [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] The history of Byodo-in Temple stretches back to
the late 10th century when it was originally built . It was a huge temple complex but unfortunately
due to fire only the Phoenix Hall remains . But it’s still very impressive and
it’s a UNESCO World Heritage site. The reason why it’s probably the most
famous Japanese temple is because since the 50s it’s been on the back of the
10 yen coin. And if you’ve ever been to Hawaii and think this temple
looks familiar then you’re right… there’s a smaller scale replica that was built
in the Valley of the Temple’s Memorial Park there [Music] while you’re in Uji make sure you get all of your matcha green tea souvenirs.. I got incense sticks, bath salts, matcha soap and even the Starbucks outside the temple do matcha donuts – it
was really good by the way! [Music] [Music] We’re staying overnight in Kyoto because
tomorrow we’re going to be exploring around the Philosopher’s Path and some of the amazing temples
and shrines around there. Some of the most popular sites in Kyoto can get quite overcrowded now but
the Philosophers’s Path is in the northern part of the city and should be less busy with tourists so
for the next video I’m going to be showing you how to get there, what the temples and shrines were
like and if we did manage to avoid the crowds [Music] if you enjoyed this video I’d really appreciate
it if you click the like button and let me know down in the comments below what you
thought of Uji. Also you can click that bell icon and you can get notified
for when the next Japan video is out [Music] We’re staying in the Gon area of Kyoto
which has been a geisha and entertainment district since the Middle Ages so it
has some really nice buildings and temples nearby. It also has some great
restaurants too but I would recommend to try and book in advance as we found that
some restaurants here didn’t allow walk-ins Anyway I’ve just noticed the
bathroom has a plunge bath … so I’m going to make the most
of these green tea bath salts! [Music]
