Japan’s NEWEST Ferry Ride “Sunflower Kamuy” – Hokkaido to Tokyo

Hello! I’m currently in Tomakomai, Hokkaido Prefecture. It’s the day a new MOL Sunflower Kamuy ferry is launched. I’m so looking forward to it! It’s an LNG-fueled ferry. I’m in the ferry terminal now. This is the check-in counter. Let’s check out the route now! From Tomakomai to Oarai. It’s an 18-hour ferry trip. The boarding gate for Sunflower Kamuy. It departs at 1:30 a.m. There’s no evening sailing today. This is the waiting area. A restaurant is open. There’s a store on the second floor. It’s pretty big! You can buy anything you want. I’m on the observation rooftop now. The Silver Ferry is berthed now. No Taiheiyo Ferry today. Sunflower Kamuy will be there. Sunflower Kamuy is coming now! That’s the maiden voyage from Oarai. I was supposed to take that sailing. But it was already full when I was gonna book. It’s turning around. The design is different from the other Sunflower Ferries. It looks cool! Like a space shuttle. Can you find a sailor standing on the tip of the bow? Total length: 654ft [199.4m]
Total tonnage: 17,472 short tons [15,600 long tons] The prescribed number of passengers is 157 passengers. The rope was thrown. Pulling the mooring rope. It’s berthed! The rampway is in the process of opening. Now it’s open! Sunflower Kamuy. Kamuy is an Ainu word meaning “god. Vehicle capacity: About 155 trucks / 50 passenger vehicles Let’s check it out well. That’s the wheelhouse. Service speed: 24 knots [27.61 mph, 44.44 km/h] Silver Ferry is coming now. It’s a rare shot! I’m heading back to the terminal now. There are 3 ferries now. The stern of the ship. Sunflower Mark is here. The boarding procedures have begun! I got my boarding ticket now! There’s no restaurant on board. I’m so excited now! It’s time to board now! Let’s go! It’s a stairway. It’s steep! There’s an elevator too! Literally, I’m on the ferry now. I gotta go to the reception to get my room key first. Looks so good! Of course, everything is new! That must be the counter. It’s almost full booking today. I got a commemorative gift with a key. This is my cabin! “Comfort S Single” Let’s do a room tour! There’s a chair fixed on the floor. I got a wooden desk. An outlet here. A remote controller for TV. I got a mirror. I got switches here. A bed light and 2 room lights I got an outlet and USB here. I got a pillow. It’s a bit firm. The bed is about 31.5 in/ 80 cm wide. I got disposable slippers. A bedding sheet and a comforter. Mattress. There is luggage space underneath. A TV on the wall. Trash cans. An adjustable vent is attached to the ceiling. S could be Shout’s S O could be Open’s O I got 2 hangers. The door has a lock, of course. Alright! Let’s walk around the ferry! They are inspired by mooring ropes. I like this furniture. So cool! I’m gonna chill out tomorrow. There are sofas and tables. This is a workout room. There are only 2 exercise bikes. 2 food vending machines. Snacks. Alcohol. Hot water station here. 2 microwaves. A Change machine. A nice round sofa. Tables. Looks like I can chill out in this space. A Japanese-style room. You have to take off your shoes. The painting on the wall is Sunflower Kamuy. The kid’s playground here. There’s a small store next to the counter. Let’s take a look! They sell the original goods of Sunflower Kamuy. Cup noodles and pre-cooked rice. Another vending machine corner there. There are only soft drinks here. Actually, there are plenty of seats. It’s mostly for solo travelers. It would be great to take a seat here to see the ocean views. I like this chair the most so far. Let’s go to the outside deck now. Smoking room here. No chair. Super simple. A funnel. Is the smoke steam? What’s this? It’s a dog park. It’s a pet-friendly ship. You can walk around this deck. But not upstairs. Looks nice! There are Men’s large public bath and Women’s large public bath. They have a sauna and cold bath too. It must be great to take a sauna on board. It’s for women. What’s over there? Ah! That’s the vehicle deck over there. I’m kind of hungry now. Let’s try frozen food! Which one should I eat?? I’ll have a beef bowl. English is available. It came out! Rice and beef are separated. You can heat it by microwave. This is beef. It’s done! So hot! I’m gonna put the beef over the rice. Here it is! Looks so good! I’ll take a spoon. Actually, I always eat a beef bowl with chopsticks. I have to toast for Kamuy! Sapporo Classic beer, sold only in Hokkaido, is only available at the kiosk, but not at vending machines on the ship. English is available at this self-casher machine too. This is the only ferry that English-friendly is available I’ve ever had. The ferry won’t leave soon. Itadakimasu! (Let’s eat!) Cheers! This beer tastes good! You should try this when you visit Hokkaido. This looks perfect! It’s so good! Gochisousama-deshita! (Thank you for the meal!) A commemorative stamp. There are eye plugs here. Is it free? Yes, it’s free. I should take them just in case. There are coin lockers. refrigerated lockers are not free. Normal lockers are free of charge. These are good for 2 persons. Nice candles. Let’s take a look at the men’s restroom. Of course, clean and new! The toilets have cleansing functions! That’s why I love Japan. Laundromat. There is also a shower room. Tattooed people are not allowed to use the large public bath. Bath towels are available to rent. I brought my Sunflower towel from home. Vamos! It was amazing to take a bath and a sauna. Let’s make a commemorative gift! I made it! Looks cute! Guess what it is? Smartphone stand and pend stand. It’s actually a bit smaller than my phone. I also got a calendar of MOL Sunflower. Which ferry of MOL do you like the most??? It’s easy to write it down by folding it up easily Kamuy! Departure preparation has begun! The rampway is in the process of being stowed. It’s super big! The boarding bridge is already detached. It’s time to leave now! Mooring ropes are rolled up smoothly! Leaving! Many ground crews are seeing us off! They are waving at us! Moving away… Hmm!?!? Someone is waving at us in the park. It’s already 1:30 a.m. tho. LOL They are still waving! There are 2 big ships next to the ferry terminal. It’s so calm in the harbor of Tomakomai. You can check the current location. I can’t sleep… So I should have one more shot! What’s this? I’ve seen the same one on the Miyazaki Car Ferry. I should go to bed. Good night! Good morning! The sun has risen already. I wasn’t supposed to see the sunrise tho. The inside of the ferry in the daytime looks even better. I can chill on board all day today. We’re still halfway on our route. We’re sailing near Iwate Prefecture now. This is a single-serve pour-over coffee. It’s so convenient for solo travelers. It’s already put coffee powder in the paper bag. All you need to do is put it in the cup and pour hot water over it. Smells so good! I gotta eat something. The only options are from the vending machines. Maybe, the sandwich? It’s also frozen. You gotta microwave it! Here my breakfast is. I love this. I brought a banana from my house. I’m still sleepy. it’s so quiet. Almost all the passengers are in their cabins. I should take a nap for a while… There’s nothing to do except eat and sleep on the ferry. So meal time is only fun time. Let’s have lunch! I got a meat gratin. Here we go! It’s cheap! But it’s such a small potion! I have only this for my lunch. And you know what, I would get hungry eventually. It’s yum! Meat sauce and cheese on the rice. Gochisousama-deshita! (Thank you for the meal!) A ship sailing together. We are faster tho. It’s such a nice weather today. This ferry has large windows to let in the sunlight. It’s been a calm sea. So it hasn’t been rocking that much so far. The sun is setting. Let’s enjoy the sunset. It was a beautiful one! I’m starving again! I’m gonna eat spaghetti. And I need something to drink. Soda. It’s the best drink when you get tired. So good! It’s carbonara with bacon and spinach. It’s mouth-watering. It’s so good actually! Thanks! I’m not full yet. I need some snacks. Kids love this snack. Chocolate in it. We’re almost there! They’re stretching! We’ve just arrived!!! It’s been a long long journey! It’s a trailer of LNG. This ferry needs to be refilled with LNG. Thank you for the comfortable stay. Let’s disembark! I gotta return my key. The check-in counter in Oarai. It looks so beautiful! I’m going back to Tokyo! I gotta get a bus to Mito Station first. 3.

  4. I wonder what the fancy rooms on the ship look like. They must be great brand new. Thanks for showing us the Kamuy. 🙂

  5. I don’t understand how this is even a Sunflower ferry. It doesn’t have the traditional escalator entrance and no restaurant. Even the livery isn’t the traditional all white with the Sunflower logo. And no Sunflower song? OK…..that might be an acceptable thing since hearing it on repeat does get kinda annoying.

  7. nice ferry, but strange timing, I wish they would have done it as a mostly overnight route, would have been so much more convenient in my opinion (though some might like this more)

Pas des restaurants avec buffet 😮, non it's not a good line

  9. Isa ako sa patunay na naging bahagi ng barko nayan kasi dito sa company namin ginawa yan pag talaga pinoy ang kumana 100% garantisado🇯🇵🇸🇽🙏
