Grandmas run this shopping street in Japan

Why is there a duck parading the streets like an elected official? Because this is Sugamojisi, the liveliest street in Tokyo. Nicknamed Harajuku for grandmas because it caters to an older crowd. And you know what? It’s full of unexpected delights like the stand selling tarts and kiche run by a French guy because why not? Or this garlic specialty store? They have aged black garlic that you can enjoy in a steamed bun. Or rich garlic and cloves, chips, and apparently coffee. How about this famous store that sells only red underwear? It’s said to bring luck and long life. Looks like they expect a lot of luck to be needed. Then there’s the Wagashi shop. Beautiful handmade sweets and confetti colors and mochi that’s soft as a cloud. I had one with a juicy strawberry tucked inside. Most of the shops are niche, specializing in dashi, green tea, or special spice blends. All the shops are orderly and quietly charming. And here’s the duck mascot again, looping back around. People wave and no one’s in a rush. It’s eclectic. It’s nostalgic.
