DES MOINES, Iowa (KCRG) – A baby Japanese macaque has been introduced to the Blank Park Zoo.

Taro, a baby Japanese macaque, was born at the zoo on June 17. His name means “eldest son.”

His mother, Anika, has been caring for Taro. She was born at the zoo in 2014.

“Each new birth is an opportunity for our guests to discover something new, connect with wildlife, and be inspired to take action to protect animals and their native habitats,” said Anne Shimerdla, President & CEO of the Zoo. “Moments like this remind us all of the important role zoos play in conservation and education, and we can’t wait for our community to meet Taro and fall in love with this incredible species.”

The Blank Park zoo, committed to wildlife conservation, have introduced multiple new animals this summer.

Taro and Anika will be in the Japanese macaque habitat every day.
