The Paris Paralympics held the final for wheelchair rugby on September 2. Japan defeated the United States by a score of 48 to 41 to win the championship. Japan had won bronze medals in wheelchair rugby at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro and 2021 Tokyo Paralympics, and this was its first gold in that competition. In the final, with 44-year-old captain Yukinobu Ike leading the way, both experienced and younger players played tough defense to succeed in winning after trailing earlier on.
Note: The kanji character that indicates “large” is read tai in the word taikai, literally meaning “large event,” as in the Japanese text. The August 9, 12, 20 and September 3 installments of this series noted that it is read dai or o (oh) depending on the word. These three are the most common readings for that character.
