what to do in kumamoto | cozy cafes, coffee, suizenji jojuen, one piece & ramen πŸ‡―πŸ‡΅

[Music] we’re leaving Fukoka now we’re at Mr donut while we wait for our Shinkansen to get to Kumamoto we have about like 30 minutes to spare and then we have our echibans which we’ll be eating on the train i’ll see you guys soon our [Music] Shinkansen ride felt like a little time capsule this older model had that retro charm with wooden accents and surprisingly roomy leg space the tray tables were tucked away in the armrest and once we pulled them out they were perfect for holding our drinks and bent boxes we both chose a ninepiece egg ben which let us try a little of everything that the Japanese aunties had made anyways we’ll finish up our lunch now and chat again once we’re at our next stop [Music] kumamoto kumamoto we’ve just rolled into Kumamoto home to Kumamoto Castle and the beloved mascot Kumamon which has become an international sensation getting around the city is really convenient thanks to the trams that run regularly it’s 180 yen per ride or you can grab a day pass for 500 yen if you’re planning to hop around anyways Joel’s craving coffee now so let’s go find a local cozy cafe [Music] [Music] and can I actually [Music] Is my mouth [Music] taste [Music] now that we’re refreshed we’ll head over to Soenji Jojo a breathtaking garden originally built as a retreat for feudal lords lucky for us it’s now open to the public for a small fee of 400 yen and honestly it’s well worth it the garden is beautiful all year round but we reckon it looks best in autumn as the foliage adds color and vibrancy [Music] look at the sunshine [Applause] [Music] inside the garden is a shrine devoted to the Hosokawa family who brought about more than 240 years of peace and prosperity to the region it’s also why I added a new stamp to my stampbook collection [Music] you want me to go [Music] mhm [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] i don’t know on our way out we spotted some ducks squabbbling [Music] and two cats casually strolling through the gardens which in Japan is often seen as a shrine spirits and guardian protectors we’ll take this as a shrine seeing us off with good luck [Music] for all my One Piece fans just a 10-minute walk from Suenji Gouen it’s the Luffy statue dedicated to the author Oda who was born and raised in Kumamoto it sits proudly in the middle of Kumamoto city surrounded by massive gingo trees there’s also a miniature Kumamoto Castle nearby for anyone that missed out on seeing the real thing [Music] the rest of the Straw Hat crew is scattered throughout Kumamoto Preventure which we’ll see a few more in our later vlogs but for now we’re getting hungry so let’s go get dinner tonight is at Kokot nestled inside the basement of Sakura Machi Shopping Center above us is an open air garden terrace complete with a bar event space playground and a nice view overlooking the city kokut serves Kumamoto ramen a style of tonkatu ramen with the added element of roasted garlic as we’re Malaysian and Singaporean garlic runs deep through our veins so we were hoping to have our minds blown though admittedly this wasn’t one of our favorite meals the broth was quite watery and lacked the depth we were hoping for but at least the gyozas are nice [Music] next time we’d want to try this at either Kurasaki or Ajisan’s flagship store the two other chains that serve this same style of ramen [Music] we’re only in Kumamoto for one night so we decide to stay at Hotel the Gate a budget business/capsule hotel it has everything we need from a shower amenities to Wi-Fi all for an affordable price of 7,000 yen for the both of us there’s two common areas one with a bar and the other with a microwave perfect for a combini dinner it should be noted that there are a few considerations when booking this place which you can see here we’d recommend bringing a pair of earplugs as for the rooms they’re cozy and equipped with everything you need for a short stay there’s a locker to store luggage a curtain along the beds for added privacy [Music] powerpoint and a little nook next to each bed to hold phones iPads or books and also individual lights above each bed this hotel is comfortable enough for a night stay that’s it for Kumamoto let us know what else you do here and we’ll see you in the next vlog [Music]
