Otaru once thrived as a merchant town thanks to herring fishing and coal shipping Today, it’s a popular tourist spot known for its retro streets lined with canals and old warehouses Access-wise, Otaru is 45 minutes from Sapporo and 1.5 hours from New Chitose Airport with no transfers We came to a shopping street with lots of food and shops Early summer in Hokkaido has perfect weather for walking around Zangi, a local Otaru specialty! Zangi is Hokkaido-style fried chicken It’s marinated before frying, so it’s packed with flavor When in Otaru, you have to stop by LeTAO There are many locations, but we came to the biggest one, LeTAO PATHOS The second floor is a café The Double Fromage This is LeTAO’s signature cheesecake Toro Fuwa Fromage Soufflé Pour fresh cream and Hokkaido cheese cream over the soufflé After that, you can add some fruit sauce on top It’s time to test your artistic skills How is it? Did I do it right? It’s fluffy and moist You barely need to chew The cheese sauce is rich but also milky and refreshing It’s simple, but really tasty Otaru is also known for its music boxes The Main Building of the Otaru Orgel Doh was built in 1915 and has a lovely retro feel Inside, there are about 3,200 types of music boxes I didn’t know there were so many kinds of music boxes They’re all so cute Sushi music box It looks so real The spinning sushi is adorable I’m getting it Hokkaido’s long-tailed tits are about this size, right? The spinning bird is so cute I’m getting this one too Otaru Canal was created by reclaiming land along the coast It was originally designed to improve cargo transport operations at the port Now you can take a sightseeing boat tour around the canal But it takes about 40 minutes, so we’ll save that for next time It’s about a 10-minute walk from Otaru Canal to Otaru Station Tonight, we’re staying at a hotel near Sapporo Station It’s a 40-minute ride from Otaru Station to Sapporo Station on the Rapid Airport train Sapporo has easy access to major spots in Hokkaido So it’s a great base for traveling We made it to Sapporo! It’s so easy without having to transfer Our hotel is about a 7-minute walk from the north exit of JR Sapporo Station Oh, there it is That shiny glass-covered building that looks like a giant mirror I guess this area is mostly offices and apartments? It’s not really in a busy district, so it feels pretty quiet. I like that We chose it because it opened this year and has a hot spring bath Here’s the lobby Since it’s brand new, everything looks spotless It looks modern, but includes local touches like domestic wood and Hokkaido soft stone Oh! There’s a FamilyMart on the first floor. That’s awesome This is where we check in >> Staff: One night for two in the Corner Suite with meals included. Is that right? >> Staff: Your room is on the top guest floor. Please enjoy the view Only the basics like toothbrushes are provided. The windows are huge. It’s so bright I feel like I’ll get a tan It’s 68 sq meters and can sleep up to six people Here’s the view from the 24th floor You can see both the cityscape of Sapporo and the mountain range beyond It’s my first time seeing Sapporo from above You can hear some car and train sounds, but they’re not too bothersome Closet It fits big luggage Disposable slippers you can take home I wish they were a bit thicker Safety box Plenty of hangers Bottled water from Hokkaido Fridge Drip bag coffee and mugs Glasses The sink and bath area are over here Even though it’s the bath area, the wood-like feel makes it warm and cozy shower room I’ve always thought these see-through baths were kind of weird But being able to see outside makes it feel really open There are plenty of places to sit Of course, there’s a TV and free Wi-Fi Time to try the public onsen baths Loungewear is on the bed You need to bring your own towel from the room The onsen bath is on the 25th floor There are separate entrances for hotel guests and day-use visitors Take off your slippers at the entrance At the top of the stairs is the post-bath lounge Women’s bath is this way I found out later that hotel guests can use the bath even before check-in on their arrival day, for free! Changing room There are plenty of lockers and the space is quite large Sink area Oh, they have Refa hair dryers Put your things in a locker and you’re all set Each shower booth is separated, and they provide full amenities including shampoo and more They used Sapporo soft stone here too, but the design stays simple and subtle The hot spring water comes from 1,000 meters underground The spring is sodium chloride-based, so it’s gentle on the skin There’s a condo building nearby, but the special glass makes it so no one can see inside There’s also a reclining bath and a daily special bath Today’s daily bath is a medicinal herbal bath called “Jikkou.” The water’s dark and smells kind of medicinal Further inside… There’s an automatic löyly sauna And a semi-open-air bath too Ahh, that hot spring warmed me up completely I’m meeting my husband at the lounge upstairs after the bath There’s a counter where you can order drinks And a gym in the back! We should’ve gone *before* the bath Exercising while looking at this view must feel luxurious The lounge is open and spacious, with floor-to-ceiling windows There are all kinds of seats, like tables and solo sofas They have Yogibo! You can relax here in your loungewear Let’s sit by the window and enjoy the view There’s a menu with paid drinks and food After a bath, it’s all so tempting… impossible to resist Cheers with Sapporo Classic and Oropo It’s time for dinner We’re at Moonlight, a restaurant with Hokkaido-style dishes on the top floor The twilight vibe is just beautiful The view is amazing again. It really feels upscale It feels like we should be celebrating something… but nope We’ll be sitting side by side by the window Tonight’s dinner course is called LUMIÉRE They also have a full bar, so the drink selection is great I already had a beer earlier… what should I get now? I went with rosé wine >> Staff: Today’s amuse is consommé royale >> Staff: It’s made with Rishiri kelp broth >> Staff: It also has scallops, surf clams, and sea urchin So soft and silky The kelp and shellfish give it a nice ocean umami Next is a cold appetizer Dip the rice croquette into the mushroom potage So good The menu is French-based, but the ingredients and presentation have a Japanese touch Even the chopsticks have a traditional pattern Crab tartare There’s caviar on it You can choose between bread or rice. Hokkaido-grown rice, “Nanatsuboshi.” Sapporo’s soul food—soup curry I carefully picked my toppings, hoping nothing splashes on my clothes This soup curry was so good I went back for seconds… and thirds! Part of the buffet is a live kitchen Vegetable tempura fritters This omelet is made with local eggs They’re known for their pale yellow yolks Topped it with Ezo deer meat sauce! Looks so good They even have seafood rice bowls You can’t come to Hokkaido and not eat this, right? I did a nice job plating it Here’s what the seating looks like Let’s eat Not too heavy and easy to eat before heading out A pancake machine! The wait makes it even more satisfying when it finally pops out Now making a parfait recommended by the chef Looking good Heart-shaped sugar.
