And we’re off on safari in Kenya.
Welcome to the second and final episode! from our series exploring East Africa.
Jumbo and welcome aboard! First, we flew to a tiny island in Tanzania, in Zanzibar.
A small sand island in the middle of the ocean.
And now, we’re in a place that’s much closer to what you probably picture when you think of Africa.
We just landed in Kenya.
This right here will be our home for the next few five days, where we’ll be going on safari — one of the best activities you can we’ve ever done — exploring one of the top national parks in the world: the Masai Mara.
I expected it to be good — but not this good.
If you’re new here, we’re the Bill and Anna, a couple from Greece — and right now we’re living in London.
We love traveling the world and chasing unique experiences. This time, our goal: to live an authentic safari experience. Aaand… I think we’re hooked. Spot the Big Five. We just saw a lion. Have a picnic right inside the Masai Mara. Right here, where we’ve settled in for breakfast a hyena is lurking nearby. And yes, we’re staying in a tent, surrounded by wildlife. I’m honestly blown away. And here we are in Kenya — we’ve just spotted our our driver, who picked us up from the airport and will be taking us all the way to the Masai Mara.
It’s quite a long journey — about 6 hours.
The only way to get there is either by air — on those tiny little bush planes —
or by renting your own car.
But we went with the third option, having a driver and to be honest, it’s a bit pricey. The ride costs around $200 one way, so $200 plus $200 makes it $400 total. Let the journey begin! Six hours, nice and easy. We’re almost there and we’ve already spotted some animals! Oh my God! We found giraffes and zebras — it’s… insane. – We finally made it.
– We’re here! We’re being welcomed by the staff.
– Wow! Do you see the buffalo over there?
– Yeah. There are buffalo and zebras right outside our room! – The house is so beautiful.
– We’re out in the countryside, guys — surrounded by animals. It’s amazing. It’s unbelievable Wow! There are zebras right here on our balcony! – Check out the view from the balcony. – Wow! – Amazing? – Amazing! Let’s go see the room too. Check out this luxury! – Want me to show you the best part?
– What? – Look, look, look! – Oh wow, we’ve got a view of the animals! – Isn’t it perfect? This place is unbelievable. Let’s check out the bathroom too… I think this is the most impressive place we’ve ever stayed at. – By far. – This house is big enough for four couples.
So grab your friends and come over! To be honest, I don’t have that many friends —
but if you do, bring them along and come! Still, we booked a chef — because honestly, we were like,
“Where are we even gonna find a supermarket out here, and cook ourselves?” And guys, he’s cooking for us right here at the house! and he even sets the table!
Look how beautifully he arranged everything. – Amazing?
– Unbelievable! The way they take care of us is next level.
– Oh wow! Look how much they’ve made for us! There’s pasta, Bolognese, and vegetables I spilled on their tablecloth… And just like that, our first day in Kenya comes to an end.
Honestly, it’s beyond all my expectations. I didn’t think it would be this amazing!
– They left us the The people here have left us alone now. We enjoyed a dinner they had prepared for us.
The chef was super polite and incredibly kind to us.
And they have a whole team They’ve got security guards all around to keep an eye on things.
– Overall, they take safety very seriously, and as Bill said, they patrol the area, but they’ve also literally locked us inside the house.
– So, I was already 100% excited before coming here But now I’m 1000% excited.
I’m heading to bed fast, because I’ll be waking up earlier than I do on Christmas morning when Santa’s coming! I’m off! Good morning, guys. We’re ready to head out for our very first safari.
But I’ve got to keep my voice down — everyone’s still asleep. It’s 6:30 AM. Our guide just arrived.
Let’s do this. We’ve hopped into the jeep and we’re ready to head out! Guys, this is epic — and the sun is just starting to rise. He even opened up the roof for us! We just spotted the first of the Big Five! The elephant He told us this elephant is left-handed, and you can tell because its left tusk is more worn down and shorter than the right one. Crazy! Still, we’ve seen elephants before in Thailand —
but they were nowhere near this big. This one is massive! They just radioed in that someone spotted lions — and now we’re rushing over! We’ve gone off-road and we’re speeding through — let’s go find them! Our guide told us that what we’re doing right now is called a game drive. The word “safari” that we all use actually comes from Swahili — their local language. – Guys, I think we just found lions.
– We finally spotted them. Look — there it is! Oh my God — it’s a female!
And there’s another one hiding behind the bushes! Look — there are two of them! Ah, it’s coming, it’s coming! Unbelievable.
– Amazing! And it just walked right up next to us, totally unbothered. Ah — Pumbaa! We’ve seen so many Pumbaas around here.
– Now we just need to find Timon too! Yeah — meerkats! Before coming on safari, I was like, “Okay, we’ll hop in a car and drive around like we’re in a zoo. But it’s nothing like that — not even close. It’s actually so much fun — because it feels like a real hunt!
You’re out there searching for the animals, spotting them, you see them in their natural environment.
You’re like, “Am I gonna find it? Am I not?” When you see an animal that’s, let’s say, a bit rare to spot — you get excited. That’s why they call it a game drive — it’s like a game!
One of the best activities we’ve ever done, by far.
– Yeah, I think so too — it’s the best one.
– I expected it to be good, but not this good! And now they’re stopping for breakfast because we didn’t eat at the hotel since we woke up super early. And look! He’s setting up a picnic for us.
We’re having breakfast right in the middle of the Masai Mara! Still, he’s checking the area — just in case there’s a leopard hiding nearby. Oh my God, what if a lion attacks us while we’re eating?
– Wow! Look where we’re having breakfast! Unbelievable place.
There’s such silence — you can literally hear a car from 3 kilometers away. Let’s eat now.
They’ve prepared toast, eggs sausages, bacon — there’s some butter over there too.
Super nice! Right here where we’ve settled in for breakfast, there’s a hyena lurking nearby.
– It wants my little sausages! Good thing our guide told us that hyenas don’t hunt very often —
it’s rare for them to actually hunt. They usually just go for leftovers. So I guess they’re just waiting for us to leave behind a piece of bread or something. Definitely the best — and most dangerous — picnic I’ve ever had! We’re back at the hotel now, taking a midday break to grab some lunch He said he’ll come pick us up again at 3:30. We’ve got the nicest house in all of the Mara! From our balcony, you can see the buffalo. Look how many there are! And now they’ve set the table for lunch — let’s go see what they’ve prepared for us. We’ve got some potatoes, chicken, and a carrot salad — kind of like our own cabbage-carrot salad back home. It’s almost 3:30, and we’re getting ready for our afternoon game drive. Bill read that we need to spray ourselves with insect repellent,
and now he’s over here spraying me down. Look, in the afternoon the mosquitoes come out and some of them here carry malaria So yeah, better not to get bitten. Even though we’re taking preventive malaria pills, the best protection is still prevention. And we’re ready to go! We’re back in the van.
Let’s see, will we manage to spot a leopard? From the Big Five, we’ve got the leopard and the rhino left. He already told us that rhinos are really rare to see around here — they hide deep in the bushes and are hard to spot. But we’ve got a good chance of spotting a leopard. We’re looking for cheetahs now. We’re in cheetah territory. But we’re moving slowly — we don’t want to scare them off. So our guide told us to keep our eyes wide open. It’s so much fun searching for animals like this out in the wild. — We found the cheetahs
— But we can’t see them yet. We’re waiting… they must be hiding. There he is Ah, I see it, I see it!
– Oh, it jumped into the water!
– They’re swimming! Oh no — they’re gonna drown! * We never actually saw the crocodile that was chasing them. These guys here have a radio and they all stay in touch the first one to spot, let’s say, a leopard, sends out a signal and all the vans head over there. The hippo, by the way, did you know it’s one of the deadliest animals out there? Go watch a video of one launching out of the water and grabbing antelopes — it’s wild. A hippo’s jaws are among the strongest in the entire animal kingdom. And they’re really hard to spot too, so we’re super lucky. Then our guide asked us, “Who’s the luckiest one between you two?”
And I said, “Me — because I found Anna.” That’s it for today.
We’re heading back home now. Good morning, guys! Today we decided to switch things up a bit, so we didn’t wake up as early as yesterday.
– Nice, right? What a breakfast! They’re spoiling us.
When I get back home, I’ll be craving fried eggs with bacon every morning! We’re all set for today’s game drive, but first, we’re doing something else. No safari experience in Africa would be complete without spending a night in a tent. So now we’re moving into a tent, where we’ll be sleeping tonight. Oh, the bathroom!
Wow, look at this, it’s huge! Perfect! And then you open this… boom! And here’s the kitchen — right next to your tent. And now we’re ready to start day two and head out for our second game drive! And we’ve just found the king of the jungle! I’m blown away. We may not have seen a live hunt, but we did see a lion eating a buffalo. Go ahead and drop a like on the video — it really helps us with the algorithm —
and hit that subscribe button too! Whoa whoa — it’s getting up! Lions in the Masai Mara aren’t super rare, but seeing a male and a female together, while they’re eating — and even catching a bit of the hunt — that’s definitely more special. Now we’re stopping for lunch — it’s like we found a Michelin-starred restaurant out here. We found a tree, it’s midday now, and we’ve sat underneath it for lunch. Since it rained a lot yesterday, we couldn’t sit on the ground today so our guide set everything up on the jeep and we ate standing.
They had packed our lunch from the hotel, just like yesterday. We’re eating and heading back out — maybe the leopard will do us a favor and show up! I never get tired of the drive itself.
Standing like this, holding on while the car moves it’s so much fun, and the view is just incredible. He had us get out of the car — and right across from us, there are hippos and crocodiles. So nice being out here, huh?
– Yeah, it just hits different. Inside the car there’s so much engine noise, but out here it’s completely peaceful and quiet. And today has been epic.
— What we managed to see I think it’s really rare, and I’m honestly overwhelmed. Such an incredible sight. Today’s safari is over, we’re back at the camp now, and the security guard is walking us to our tent. Unfortunately, we didn’t get to see a leopard. It didn’t do us the favor —
but that’s okay. We saw so many animals. Now we’re off to relax in the tent, and later we’ll light a fire, have dinner, and hang out with the Maasai warriors who protect us at night. It’s starting to rain. What a downpour! We’ve settled in and we’re just watching the rain — and even this is so enjoyable. No matter the weather, this place is incredible. Like we said, the tent has its own private kitchen,
and the chef came right here to cook for us. They prepared our dinner — and served it on the tent’s balcony, since it was raining and we couldn’t eat at the table we originally planned. Tonight we’ve got pasta with minced meat, and the chef made us fresh chapati an African flatbread, kind of like a tortilla, but way tastier. And these are even more delicious! – Super fresh. – And it’s amazing!
– The highlight of the trip. Thank you, chef! We’re gonna enjoy our last dinner with a view of nature even if you can’t really see it on camera right now and we’ll catch you in a bit. Don’t fall asleep on us just yet! Let’s go take a shower in the tent. I’m so curious right now. What’s this guy doing? – What are you doing?
– I’m showering. – How’s the shower in the tent?
– It’s boiling hot, it’s amazing! Let’s share a few more details about the whole experience. Starting with the prices: to get here, you have a few options flying, taking a taxi, or renting your own car. For us, having a driver was by far the most convenient. It did cost $200 to get here and another $200 to go back to the airport, but the ride was super smooth, the driver was great, and of course, he knows the timing — which is really important. Here in the Masai Mara, there are tons of accommodation options both inside and outside the park. We chose to stay at Cobe Mara, and we’re so thankful for their amazing hospitality. The entire staff at Cobe Mara was truly exceptional — so we definitely recommend it. Also, what stressed me out the most while planning this trip was how we were going to book everything the game drive, the driver, all of it. But the hotel arranged everything for us, and they work with great partners. As for the safari itself: the game drive costs €150 per car per day, and the park entrance fee is €100 per person per day, in low season. During high season, it goes up to €200 per person per day. That’s it for now. We’re off to bed, and we’ll see you in the morning with a big cup of coffee in the garden, overlooking the zebras! How amazing is it to wake up here, seriously. — Good morning, guys!
— Oh look! the chef already made us coffee! And today we’ve got Bill’s favorite breakfast again! Yesterday I told the chef, “Thank you so much — this is my absolute favorite breakfast.” And he was so happy, he said, “Do you want me to make Bill’s favorite again tomorrow?” and I was like, “Yes, please!” That was our trip to Kenya! Huge thanks to Kobe Mara for the incredible hospitality. If you enjoyed the video, give us a like and subscribe, it really helps us out a lot. See you on the next adventure!
