【穴場の絶景】意外と知らないレトロな街並みと絶景の離島、歴史と絶景を巡る旅。ノスタルジックを感じる三重県鳥羽市の秘境「神島」

An island that was once an exile site for the Toba clan. A Showa-era retro streetscape where time has stopped. History and culture remain strong. An island that has been believed to be home to gods. Kamishima, a remote island in Mie Prefecture. Press the subtitle button or CC button to enjoy full subtitles. Hello everyone, this is Watatabi. This time, I’m heading to a remote island in Mie Prefecture. The island is characterized by a Showa-era retro streetscape where time has stopped. The location is Toba City in the southeastern part of Mie Prefecture. I’m heading to Kamishima, famous for being the setting for Yukio Mishima’s novel “Shiosai.” Kamishima is known as a “treasure trove of folklore” because of the various festivals that have been passed down. I’ve been there once, but I’ve never gone around the island, so today I’d like to go around Kamishima. First, I head to Toba Marine Terminal at Toba Port. 500 yen for 24 hours!? That’s cheap! My car is only 2.1m tall, so I’m just about there. I arrived at the parking lot and will walk about 10 minutes to the ferry terminal. I parked my car near Kintetsu Toba Station. There is a parking lot right in front of the ferry terminal, but I wanted to park in a covered, shady parking lot because I have about three batteries in my car, so I came there. I have to walk about 10 minutes from that parking lot, but I’m heading towards the ferry terminal now. This is the “Toujiba” Toba Marine Terminal. There was also a multi-story parking lot here . I messed up. But it’s 500 yen for up to 2 hours, so the price is completely different from the previous parking lot which was 500 yen a day. What a flashy boat. It’s a boat that looks like it’s heading to Ryugu-jo Castle. It was really close, I think I only walked for 5 minutes. Parking around here is quite expensive. This is the ticket booth. We ‘re about to depart, so I’ll check in. This time, I’m going to take a boat from this Toba Marine Terminal to Kamishima. It takes about 40 minutes to get to Kamishima because we go via Wagu Fishing Port on Toshijima Island. We boarded at 7:40 and are scheduled to arrive at 8:20. So, the short boat trip begins. The fare is 790 yen, and you can buy it at the ticket machine. You can buy a one-day pass for 1,480 yen, so you can tour the islands from Toba → Wagu → Kamishima → Sugashima → Toba. I don’t know if you can do it all in one day though. It takes about two hours to go around the island, and after arriving, there are only two boats from Kamishima to Toba, at 11:35 and 15:40. So if you can’t get on the 11:35 boat, you’ll have to kill time somewhere else for another three hours. We arrived at Wagu Fishing Port on Toshijima. More than 90% of the passengers disembark here. Wagu Fishing Port is the halfway point to Kamishima, so it takes about 20 more minutes to arrive at Kamishima. Kamishima is an island with a circumference of 3.9 km and an area of 0.76 km2. It is located about 14 km from the mainland of Toba City and about 5 km from the Aichi Prefecture side . It used to be Kamishima Village, but it has been part of Toba City since 1954. According to Toba City, in 2022 there are 151 households and a population of 309 people. As the name suggests, Kamishima was believed to be an island ruled by gods. There is Hachijojima, which is famous as a penal colony, but Kamishima was also once a penal colony of the Toba clan, and was sometimes called Shima Hachijo. It seems that it was impossible to leave the island on one’s own because it is surrounded by the ocean with strong currents. Furthermore, the living environment was always chronically short of water, which may have been more severe than the death penalty. We will arrive soon. Although I have no connection to the sea, I feel nostalgic for some reason. We have arrived. We will disembark. We have arrived. This is how Kamishima is a typical fishing village. The main industry is of course fishing. Since it is an isolated island, there are no bears or anything like that. The only mammals living on the island are small ones such as bats and cats. It seems that the island used to suffer a lot from water shortages. The island only relies on two small reservoirs and wells on the island, and now water from the Hasu Dam in Matsusaka City is transported through water pipes installed on the seabed. Is this an octopus pot? There are so many of them. Apparently there is a restaurant somewhere that serves delicious octopus rice. I forgot to ask, so I don’t know where it is. If there is one, I’d like to stop by. There doesn’t seem to be a supermarket or convenience store. I’m planning to go around the island today, so I’ll buy a drink from this vending machine and then take a walk. The post office is next to the vending machine. My grandmother bought a house on this island, and I’m here to show it to her. She hasn’t lived on the island yet, and it seems she’s going to renovate it soon. The stairs are pretty steep. Oh, it’s amazing. It’s beautiful. You can see the Irago Channel, right? Towards Cape Irago. Ah, yes, yes, yes. That’s the area. Look towards the sea. The night view is so beautiful. I’m jealous that you live in a place like this. A normal, clean, modern toilet. Wow! Deep! It’s about 1m deep. What is it used for now? That well. Well, a well can be used for washing dishes and stuff. In the past, we used to wash rice here too. It seems like water was hard to get in the past… Everyone had to go up the mountain to get it. To the reservoir? Yeah, we waited in line to get water. Wow! I see. It’s become easier to live here, when it comes to electricity and water. Aren’t they flushing water now? Most of the houses. They’re all flushing water. Isn’t the house in front of you uninhabited? Look, there’s a hole in the roof. There’s a hole in the roof, lol . There’s a hole over there too. All the houses have holes! lol The houses are so close together that it would be dangerous if they collapsed. All the houses on the top are vacant. Are all the houses on the top vacant? How many elementary school students were there? About four people. About four? And one middle school student? Oh, I see. There’s no high school, right? Everyone goes to Ise or Toba for high school. They live alone or go to school there. If there’s even one place to eat. Well, I’m going to the other side of the island. Be careful. Yes, thank you. He was a really nice guy. He showed me around the house. It seems he hasn’t lived there yet. “Smoking is prohibited in this town.” This is the famous clock tower for some reason. It seems that there is a nursery school and Yatsushiro Shrine beyond this clock tower. This is a well. Let’s go beyond the clock tower. It seems that the temperature will rise to about 34 degrees today, and it’s already really hot. This is the laundry area. It seems that people used to do their laundry here. It’s a pretty retro townscape, but most of it is a steep slope. Is this a bath? The bath is in a detached building. It’s 230m to Yatsushiro Shrine. There’s still more to go. For now, I want to go to the shrine. The scenery is amazing. It’s so beautiful. It’s a very peaceful place. Just walking around feels good. The torii gate is pure white. This shrine seems to be a Japanese heritage site. I’m not sure, but I think the people who were exiled here had various beliefs. Due to this, there were about 11 shrines on the island. It seems that these 11 shrines were enshrined together to become this shrine. There are more than 200 steps, but I would like to go there since I have come all the way. It’s really hard… these steps are also quite steep. I’m glad I bought tea. But one bottle isn’t enough. I’ll buy another one later before going to the other side of the island. We’ll arrive soon… is that it? We arrived. It’s a very beautiful building. There is something called “Children’s fortune slips”. And they don’t charge you for it. It says “Please take it freely”. It looks like this. It was a very beautiful main hall. I’m not sure if it’s this building, but it seems that hundreds of sacred treasures from the Kofun period to the Muromachi period are secretly stored. There is a lighthouse 500m away from the shrine, but I haven’t been able to explore the town properly, so I would like to explore the town first and then go around the island counterclockwise. Now, let’s go down. There are a lot of mosquitoes, and both of my arms are bitten so much that it’s really itchy. I can’t make it to the 11 o’clock boat, so I’ll definitely be there in the evening. I want to spend the whole day on this island today. I’m going around the island counterclockwise, and there are some scenic spots such as karst, so I’m going to take a picture with a small drone called HOVERAir X1 Smart for the fourth time. This time I’m going to take pictures in manual mode and in a different way, so I’ll introduce the details at the end of the video, so please watch until the end. The view from here is nice. There’s some construction going on here. Just walking around takes a lot of energy. I tried to go around the island from here, but the whole road is closed and I can’t get through. It’s a building under construction, but it’s an old power plant. It was closed last year due to aging and will be demolished after March of this year, but the demolition work is underway now. Electricity is currently supplied by an undersea cable. I can’t get through the road over there, so I’ll go through the back alley and there’s a road that leads out further ahead, so I’ll head from the back alley. Eh? Which way? Is it this way? There’s also something like a temple here. The scenery is also nice here. Once you leave the houses, it’s hot wherever you are. There’s no shadow. The heat is taking away my strength… it’s all uphill from here. I’m starting to lose confidence in going around the island. I’ve been talking to a lot of people, they’re all really nice people. I’m at the bottom. I was actually planning to come from this way, but I came out from this way. It’s 1.5km from here to the lighthouse. It’s doubled by 1km. A car without a license plate… is this… an abandoned car…? I can see a roof… is it a house? A house… No, this is probably not inhabited anymore… It seems like there’s karst up ahead, so I’m going to go see it. It’s beautiful. The scenery would not be out of place in a Ghibli movie. They grow vegetables in a place like this. The cucumbers are huge! It’s really hard to come here to harvest them. Finally, we reached the sea. The sea is so beautiful. There are a few driftwood here and there. There’s no one there. Even the people on the island probably don’t come to the other side of the island. Oh dear… the road is submerged. I’m walking on concrete. I climbed up, but I can’t get down now. I thought I’d be able to get down if I went to the end, but I’m forced to get down here. There’s no shadow… this is bad… I want to take a break, but there’s no shadow… I feel like I’m going to collapse… I’ve come out to the sea again. It’s beautiful… below here is Furusato Beach and Hachijo Rock. Is this Hachijo Rock? Or is that the Hachijo Rock? I wonder. Well, there’s nothing in particular when you go down. There’s a little bit of shadow. Wait a moment. It’s hot! I’ve come out to the sea again. This is “Niwa no Hama”. This is the karst topography. The sea is also incredibly beautiful. On this side of the karst topography are the elementary school and junior high school. I think the school building was rebuilt in 2017. It’s a beautiful school building, but it seems there are only four elementary school students and one junior high school student. This is the karst topography of Kamishima. Karst topography is a special erosion topography that is strongly influenced by climate and geological structure, not just by the type of rock. Over the years, rainwater containing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere has dissolved and eroded exposed limestone, which can develop into unique topography such as mortar-shaped holes called dolines, sharp triangular pyramidal castle towers, and cavities. These topography are collectively called “karst topography.” It seems that it was designated as a natural monument of Toba City on November 26, 1996. You can see it quite close up. It certainly has a strange rock shape. How far can I walk? Below is a cliff. That’s as far as I can go. It’s dangerous to go any further. It’s a very steep and narrow staircase, but if you go down here, you can go to the beach. I went around counterclockwise, but the course guide says that the route goes from Yatsushiro Shrine to the lighthouse, sees the observation post, and returns to the fishing port. I went completely in the opposite direction. This is where I am now, I came all the way from the temple to where I am now. I’m probably not even halfway there. I guess I’m halfway around here. I’ve got half a lap to go, but I only have this much to drink. This is bad… I’m so hot and thirsty I’m almost dehydrated. Up ahead there is a place called the guard post, so I’d like to go and see it. It’s a bit of a shadow from here. No matter how much I climb, the stairs continue. I can’t do this without taking a break… there are still more stairs. If you take that recommended course, the whole climb will be downhill, so I think it would be better for you to come from the shrine. Finally I’ve come to a slightly flat road. I’ll have to climb again… if I take a break, I’ll be eaten by mosquitoes. Finally I can see the building. I’ve arrived. This is the remains of the guard post. This building was built during the war to observe the impact point of cannons fired by the Japanese Army from Irago. This was built in 1929 (Showa 4). After the war, it was apparently used by villagers to store kindling they had collected from the mountains. It will be 100 years since this building was built in 4 years, but it doesn’t show much deterioration. It seems like it’s OK to go inside, so I’d like to take a look. This is what the inside looks like. It’s a concrete building, so your voice echoes. I don’t know much about this, so I’m not sure what these holes are for. It seems there is a second floor, so I’ll go up. Here… there’s a door. This is the second floor. The view is absolutely stunning. Ah, that’s the Irago Peninsula. This is what it looks like inside. It’s very breezy and cool. This is Cape Irago in Aichi Prefecture. It seems that they observed the impact point of cannon shots fired from that area from here. We can go up even higher. There are still stairs. The view is better than I expected. It’s a great view, but it’s quite hard to get here. Now, next we’ll head towards the lighthouse. I’m taking a short break now, but there’s no wind at all, so it’s actually hot if you just stay still. I only have this drink left, so I’ll try not to sweat as much as possible. It’s becoming a survival situation. I’ll go up the stairs from here. I wish I’d come from the shrine… It’s much harder than the shrine I was at earlier. It’s really hard. I’ve come out onto a flat road. From here it’s finally time to go down. I’ve finally stopped sweating. I’m dehydrated. Finally , a sign has appeared. This is where I am. It looks like the lighthouse is right in front of me. It’s just a little bit more to the shrine. There are vending machines around here, so I’ll have to drink some water. First, I’ll go to the lighthouse. This is it. This is the lighthouse. I wonder if this is a house? It’s completely engulfed in vegetation. This is the Kamishima Lighthouse. Unfortunately, you can’t go inside. This is the Kamishima Lighthouse, which was built in 1910 after the battleship “Asahi” ran aground, and it continues to protect the safety of the “Irago Strait” between Cape Irago and Kamishima. This area is said to be a difficult place to navigate because of the fast currents and recitations. Now, I’d like to go back to the fishing port. It’s 760m from here to the fishing port. My legs are shaking like a newborn fawn. I’m back towards the shrine. These stairs are hard. I’ve come down quite a bit towards the town. This is the waiting room for the ferry. I forgot what time the next ferry was, so I’ll check. It’s cool… 3:40 p.m…. there are about two hours left. The fare is 740 yen. I’ll buy it first. I tried to buy a ticket, but only 1,000 yen and 2,000 yen bills can be used. 5,000 yen bills are not accepted, so I can’t buy a ticket. There are no shops on this island, so what should I do? Someone from the office came and I was able to exchange the bills successfully. I’m going back on the boat. This time, I went around the remote island “Kamishima” in Toba City, Mie Prefecture. How was it? The townscape is very retro and there are many spectacular views, so why don’t you go there too? I wish there was a place to eat. I’m going to be rocked by the boat for 40 minutes and return to the mainland. It ‘s just a little bit more to the parking lot. No… I’m really tired. This time, I used this small drone “HOVERAir X1 Smart” to take pictures of the spectacular views, but this drone can be flown without a remote control or smartphone, but this time I used my smartphone to take pictures in manual mode. This is the manual mode. Like this, you can operate it with the video in the app and the remote control. The drone’s camera is facing me now, so I’m the one in the picture, but you can control it with the remote control in the app like this. If you’re good at radio control, I think this operation will be very useful. I’m clumsy, so I’m not good at active operation and I can’t shoot well, but I took a picture like this. I’m not used to it, so it stops and the video is like that, but you can shoot while operating it like this. Unlike normal drones, it is a very small drone of 99g, so you can operate it indoors or in a narrow space, and if a normal drone hits a wall, it will break or the wings will break with most probability, but this one has a propeller guard and is designed to be quite light, so it is less likely to break even if it hits a wall. Once you get used to using it, you will be able to shoot images that enhance the video even more. For details about this drone, there is a link in the description, so if you are interested, please check it out. This time, I shot using this small drone. Well, see you in the next video. Thank you for watching until the end.

  20. An ebike would make exploring a lot easier. Though you might need to carry a solar charger for it. A widebrimmed hat to keep the sun off your head and shoulders would be good.

  28. @watatabi san thank u so much always for showing so many interesting places of japan.
and explaining w english caption so that i can understand. i appreciate 🙏🏻
