This town once prospered through the production of copper and bengara. The beautifully uniform appearance of the houses tells the story of its history. Bengara is a red pigment with insect-repellent and preservative properties,
which has been used in many buildings since ancient times. The red townscape is created by the bengara-painted walls and red-tiled roofs. Many residences along the streets are still inhabited, preserving the town’s historic scenery. In addition to residences,
there are restaurants and souvenir shops where visitors can enjoy meals and shopping. Recently, accommodations have also been established,
allowing visitors to stay overnight in the town. Located in the center of town,
the Former Katayama Residence is one of Fukiya’s representative historical buildings. This residence belonged to a merchant who was engaged in the production and sale of bengara, featuring a spacious compound and intricate architectural details. Today, it is open to the public as a museum, where visitors can learn about the history of Fukiya. A magnificent wooden building stands on the outskirts of the town. The Former Fukiya Elementary School,
built in 1900, is the oldest surviving wooden school building in Japan. Until its closure in 2012, it nurtured generations of local children. After closing, it has been repurposed as a facility to share the history and culture of Fukiya. The classrooms and hallways retain their original atmosphere,
giving visitors a nostalgic and profound sense of history. How about visiting the uniquely red-colored Fukiya Furusato Village? We invite you to visit and experience it for yourself.
