TOKYO (TR) – Tokyo Metropolitan Police have revealed that an inspector has been referred to prosecutors for allegedly taking secret photos of women with a camera installed in his shoe, reports Jiji Press (July 12).
On May 9, the police inspector, aged in his 40s and working at a regional headquarters, allegedly took tosatsu (voyeur) photos up the skirts of four women walking in the Jiyugaoka area of Meguro Ward using a small pen-shaped camera installed in his shoe.
During questioning, he said, “I couldn’t control my feelings.”
On the day of the incident, the inspector was off duty. That evening, he was apprehended by a witness while taking additional photos up the skirts of two high school girls at the Miyashita Park shopping facility in Shibuya Ward. The crime in Jiyugaoka was discovered during a subsequent investigation.
On Friday, the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department imposed a pay cut to the inspector of 10 percent over a 6-month period. However, he voluntarily retired from his post on the same day.
Junichiro Suga, counselor of the Police Affairs Department, said, “This is completely unacceptable for a police officer, and we have taken strict disciplinary action.”
