Anime’s latest breakout series Gachiakuta is making a serious splash, with fans around the world showing up in droves as part of a massive “World Takeover” campaign.

From giant murals in Tokyo and LA to premiere screenings in 16 countries (but not Australia?) and immersive activations at Anime Expo, Crunchyroll and the Gachiakuta Anime Production Committee have pulled off one of the boldest anime launches in recent memory.

In Los Angeles, Anime Expo attendees were the first to witness Episode 1, alongside series creators Kei Urana and Hideyoshi Andou, and BONES film producer Naoki Amano. A 3D billboard, immersive scavenger hunts and a towering replica of main character Rudo’s scrap-metal gloves added to the hype.

Meanwhile, cities like Milan, Taipei and Hong Kong were hit with coordinated mural drops—together forming the phrase “Watch out world!” (see below) in a clever global stunt.

Elsewhere, Berlin’s Mehringdamm U-Bahn station was taken over with more than 130 posters in a striking homage to the show’s graffiti-stained aesthetic, while the streets of San Francisco and trolleys in San Diego were wrapped in Gachiakuta art.

The new series follows Rudo, a young outcast who’s falsely accused of murder and thrown into “the Pit,” a monstrous junk-filled wasteland teeming with Trash Beasts.

With its gritty visuals and a distinct spray-paint sensibility, Gachiakuta blends shonen-style action with social commentary and a punk edge.

The show marks the directorial debut of Fumihiko Suganuma, with series composition by Hiroshi Seko (Attack on Titan, Chainsaw Man) and music by Taku Iwasaki (Bungo Stray Dogs).

New episodes of Gachiakuta stream weekly on Crunchyroll, with Episode 2 landing this Sunday, July 14 at 1:00am AEST. Catch up on Episode 1 now.
