Hey Japan lovers! Ever heard of Kanazawa? If you‘re looking for a spot that’s got all the old-school Japan vibes but also some cool modern twists, this is your place. Think ”Kyoto‘s cooler, less crowded cousin.“ So many amazing things to check out here!
First up, you absolutely have to hit Kenrokuen Garden. Seriously, it’s one of Japan‘s top three gardens for a reason. It’s HUGE and just stunning no matter what time of year you go. Perfect for a leisurely stroll and a million photo ops. Right next door is Kanazawa Castle Park, which is super cool for imagining samurai life back in the day.
Wanna feel like you stepped into a movie set? Head to the Higashi Chaya District. It‘s this gorgeous old geisha district with wooden teahouses lining the streets. Grab some matcha, chill at a cafe, and definitely keep an eye out for all the gold leaf stuff – Kanazawa is the gold leaf capital of Japan, so you’ll see it on everything from art to ice cream (yep, gold leaf ice cream is a thing!).
For a dose of samurai history, wander through the Nagamachi Samurai District. It‘s got these cool canals and old earthen walls, and you can even peek inside the Nomura Samurai House to see how those guys lived. Pretty neat!
And for all you foodies out there, get ready to feast at Omicho Market! This place is Kanazawa’s ”kitchen,“ and it‘s buzzing with fresh seafood from the Sea of Japan, local veggies, and tons of delicious street food. You absolutely can’t leave without trying some fresh sushi or a seafood bowl. Your taste buds will thank you!
Finally, for something a bit different, pop into the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art. It‘s got this super cool, circular design and some really interactive exhibits, including that famous ”Swimming Pool“ art piece where it looks like you’re underwater. So much fun!
Kanazawa is seriously a hidden gem with so much to offer – history, art, amazing food, and just good vibes all around. Get this city on your Japan bucket list, stat! You won‘t regret it!
