TOKYO (Kyodo) — Tokyo stocks opened lower Thursday as exporters were pressured by a stronger yen.


In the first 15 minutes of trading, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average fell 181.28 points, or 0.46 percent, from Wednesday to 39,640.00. The broader Topix index was down 15.59 points, or 0.55 percent, at 2,812.57.


On the top-tier Prime Market, decliners were led by electric appliance, oil and coal product and insurance issues.


At 9 a.m., the U.S. dollar fetched 146.09-13 yen compared with 146.27-37 yen in New York and 146.84-86 yen in Tokyo at 5 p.m. Wednesday.


The euro was quoted at $1.1737-1740 and 171.47-56 yen against $1.1717-1727 and 171.47-57 yen in New York and $1.1707-1708 and 171.91-95 yen in Tokyo late Wednesday afternoon.
