Iceland South Ring Road is without a doubt the most beautiful route in all of Iceland. This cinematic travel film will give you a taste of all that south ring road has to offer.
Also check out our Iceland south ring road travel guide below with our 10 ten sights to visit.
Countless waterfalls, incredible landscapes, crystal clear waters, black sand beaches, arches that stretch out to the sea, and amazing rock formations created from years of volcanic activity.
We started our self drive road trip from Reykjavik in the beginning of October in a super basic retrofitted camper van. After a quick loop around the golden circle, which we also highly recommend鈥articularly Gullfoss, we hit the south ring road and began our exploration. While there are literally dozens of epic landscapes and stops along the way we found a few that really took our breath away and featured those in this video.
All in all we spent about a week cruising the south and we wish we had even more time to explore. Nevertheless here are our top 10 sights along Iceland鈥檚 south ring road (South ring road is also known as Highway 1 to be a bit more specific)
Our top 10:
S贸lheimasandur plane wreckage (The DC-3 wreck): The S贸lheimasandur plane wreckage is a famous site in Iceland where a plane crashed in November 1973. The US Navy airplane – a Douglas Super DC-3 – was forced to crash land on S贸lheimasandur beach. The crew all survived the impact, but the plane was abandoned and still lies there after 4 decades. Keep in mind that to get to the plan will require roughly a 4 km walk from the road, so make sure you have plenty of time to spare.
Seljalandsfoss: Made famous by the ability to get behind the waterfall in direction that faces sunset, Seljalandsfoss has become a must visit for tourists, photographers, film makers and instagramers around the world.
Skogafoss (Sk贸gafoss): While Skogafoss is not the most impressive waterfall in Iceland it does offer a uniquely symmetrical shape and also gives onlookers the ability to get pretty up close and personal with this earthly marvel.
Dyrholaey Arch (Dyrh贸laey): Featured in Kiplinger, Nat Geo, and countless movies, Dyrh贸laey Arch is a must visit in Iceland. During the warmer months you can sometimes even spot the rare Puffin hanging out on the cliffs edge.
Kirkjufjara Beach: This black sand beach near Vik boasts a number of different interesting landscapes and oceanscapes. Spend the afternoon there exploring them all.
Jokulsarlon (J枚kuls谩rl贸n Glacier Lagoon): J枚kuls谩rl贸n is a glacial lagoon, bordering Vatnaj枚kull National Park in southeastern Iceland. Its still, blue waters are filled with icebergs from the surrounding Brei冒amerkurj枚kull Glacier. The Glacier Lagoon flows through a short waterway and leaves chunks of Ice along the shore which actually gives name to the small passage Diamond Beach. In winter, the lagoon hosts hundreds of seals.
Haifoss: The waterfall H谩ifoss is situated near the volcano Hekla in southern Iceland. The river Foss谩, a tributary of 脼j贸rs谩, drops here from a height of 122 m. This is the fourth highest waterfall of the island, after Mors谩rfoss, Glymur and Hengifoss. The road to Haifoss is generally not recommended for 2wd vehicles but we did it anyways.
Reynisfjara: Reynisdrangar are basalt sea stacks situated under the mountain Reynisfjall near the village V铆k 铆 M媒rdal, southern Iceland which is framed by a black sand beach that was ranked in 1991 as one of the ten most beautiful non-tropical beaches in the world.
Svartifoss: Svartifoss is a waterfall in Skaftafell in Vatnaj枚kull National Park in Iceland, and is one of the most popular sights in the park. It is surrounded by dark lava columns, which gave rise to its name
Honorable Mention
Hjalparfoss: Near Haifoss, this double waterfall rages and blasts massive amounts of water into the lake below. You will usually find a fly fisherman or two hunting for their daily catch.
Vik Town (V铆k 铆 M媒rdal) – Vik is one of the most famous little villages along the south ring road. It鈥檚 famous for its quaint but ideally positioned white church overlooking the black sand beach and popular rock formations of Kirkjufjara. Although the town itself is small it鈥檚 a perfect place to post up for a few days and enjoy the multitude of amazing sights.
Halsanefshellir Cave: This cave located on Kirkjufjara beach was a lava tube. The constant changes of temperature from hot to cold has created some uniquely geometrically shapes.
Diamond Beach: This beach gets it name from the many small chunks of glacial ice that runs out of Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon. If you are lucky you might find one of the perfect diamonds just laying there along the river buried in the black sand.
