Oga, Akita (秋田県男鹿市) – Teisui (海と入り陽の宿 帝水) ryokan Nishinokaze (新館 西の風) room tour 2025 Jul. 03
So we’re in Akita Prefecture um in the 12 Hoku region of Japan which is just south of Almori. Um so not at the very northern tip of the main island of Honu but it’s close to the top. Um it’s on the Pacific uh I’m sorry the Sea of Japan side. Um neighboring it is uh Iwatate prefixure on to the east and then to the north is Almoi. So this is u room 103. This the room type is called um uh Nishinoaz. So uh this room was renewed in January of 2025. So just uh six months ago. And uh there there’s a um one grade higher room technically although the price uh doesn’t vary much if at all called Kitano Kaz which um which is a larger room. This one is a little bit modest um about 77 square meters whereas the Kitano Kaz is 92. But the benefit is that this was renewed um refurbished in um in again six months ago. It’s Japanese modern style whereas the uh the special room the tokishu is more euro style and not in a way that’s to our uh liking. So anyways, you walk down the hallway over here is the toilet. And then over here is the uh the wash basin. I’ll get to that part in a second. This is the uh main living area. So this is a a doon called Tesui in the Oga Peninsula. 10 rooms again in Akita pre and uh yeah so you can see that it’s a a smart wa modern w meanings Japan Japanese modern design which is uh to our liking especially the misses and then over here you have uh the mini bar and a fridge And then uh see here you have a small TV seating area. So the Oga Peninsula is on the extreme west side of Akita, but um there there’s other places that are west Akita, of course, including Shiraakami Sanchi, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Um from a nature standpoint, it’s awesome. We’ve been there. Uh Oga Peninsula has its share of things to do and see, including an aquarium, which is just a few minutes down the road from here. Um, it’s also known for a mythical demon like creature called Namahag, which was created in a way, the myth is that it goes and runs around and scares children, but it looks like a demon. Um, especially boys in a way to toughen them up for the life ahead. Uh, to when dealing with uh adversity, you know, don’t sherk in um in fear. Confront your fears. Anyway, so you can see that this is a has a really nice view from the deck. Let me come around. You can see some interesting rock formations. You see, uh I will zoom in. Boop. And the aquarium is right down near the rocks over there. You can see a lighthouse. You can see some more rocks over there. Another lighthouse. There’s some really pretty areas. Uh there’s Cape Nudo and several other capes. There’s um boat cruises you can go on. It’s it’s just a very um quiet, secluded place. We also visited a place called Unoji temple which uh in the uh during the season when the hydrangeia uh in Japan they call a site they’re in bloom they it it is a spectacular site they have thousands of the um hydrangeas uh dotting the landscape um at and around the temple which is about 20-minut drive away. So interesting thing about this bath, check it out. First of all, it is straight from the source, never recirculated um and never treated. And you see it’s it’s brown or in Japan they call it gold. So this uh this is how it is um in terms of the uh hot springs uh that they get from the source here which they drilled about 3 years ago on site. This place was formed in 1992 tou so I don’t know how the onsen was before there. What I can say is that the dio communal uh onsen bath was um is still um recirculated and it is not this color. It’s treated and then recirculated. So both the uh private rental baths as well as the uh communal and gender segregated baths are not like this. So if you want the authenticity then you want it to be you want to go in the one in your room. So anyways, so coming around this way, this is the bedroom. Let me uh go over here. This is the bedroom. So, western style beds. Did I show this already? I I don’t even remember. Maybe I did. But yeah, so you you you get a really authentic uh onsen experience, but only in the room. Um but it’s still cool bathing. So the the the um communal bath is uh is a indoor bath. So you have glass, you have a view, but it’s not open air. Whereas the um the rental bath, the kashkid buro actually is sort of like this, but with a bigger bath and it has a really nice view as well. So again, um it’s free for those who are staying here. And it’s first come, first service. Someone’s not using it, you can walk in. Um if you’re using it, you just lock it and then people it lights up. There’s a there’s a sign outside um for a lamp for each of the um the baths, the rental bath, the three of them. It’ll light up if someone’s uh is occupying that bath. So anyway, so this is Tesui in the remote Oga Peninsula of Akita Prefecture. Um about hour and a half I think uh from Akita airport. So, not a place that that is easy to get to, but uh this seems like a place that we’ll enjoy passing the time. Again, it’s only 77 square m, but you know, by uh but we we prefer this one over the 92 square meter room because it has onsen and it’s you can open up the you know, the glass um doors and and you get the open air feeling. So um you know this this is uh Nishin Nokaz room type at tu.
A walkthrough of our Nishinokaze room (新館 西の風, #103) at Teisui (海と入り陽の宿 帝水), a 10-room luxury ryokan located in the Oga Peninsula in Akita Prefecture, Japan (秋田県男鹿市). The room has a spectacular view, and featured an authentic, brown-colored onsen baths because they’re straight from the source and not filtered, and only turn brown after the spring is exposed to oxygen. But, it’s not kakenagashi (かけ流し) – it’s recirculated in the room, but they fill it up fresh every time a new group of guests checks into the same room.
Note that Nishinokaze is not the top room category at Teisui, but I would argue that it’s superior to the “Kitanokaze” rooms. The latter is 92m² vs. Nishinokaze’s 77m²; however, Nishinokaze’s design is more modern, has an open-air onsen bath on the deck (Kitanokaze doesn’t have any bath in the room whatsoever, spring water or otherwise), and for an additional charge, Nishinokaze’s guests can choose to have meals served in your guest room, which is recommended over dining in the main restaurant if you’d prefer some peace and privacy.
