TOKYO (Kyodo) — Tokyo stocks opened higher Wednesday, lifted by technology shares that tracked overnight advances by their U.S. counterparts.
In the first 15 minutes of trading, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average rose 82.57 points, or 0.21 percent, from Tuesday to 39,771.38. The broader Topix index was up 3.94 points, or 0.14 percent, at 2,820.48.
On the top-tier Prime Market, gainers were led by oil and coal product, marine transportation and mining issues.
At 9 a.m., the U.S. dollar fetched 146.86-88 yen compared with 146.55-65 yen in New York and 146.03-05 yen in Tokyo at 5 p.m. Tuesday.
The euro was quoted at $1.1723-1724 and 172.16-21 yen against $1.1719-1729 and 171.78-88 yen in New York and $1.1760-1761 and 171.74-78 yen in Tokyo late Tuesday afternoon.
