A Slow Day in Tokyo: Shopping, Great Food, Cafes, Hidden Gems, Cherry Blossoms

Some days, you don’t really need a plan. Just a good walk, something good to eat, and a few stops you’ve been meaning to make. We started in Aoyama and we enjoyed the vibe of this quiet and stylish neighborhood. Had lunch at Maisen and finally tried their famous Kurobuta pork. Then we dropped by Moscot because I’ve been curious about the Lemtosh, the frame that Johnny Depp uses. I’m a fan of really good Japanese denim so we went to Momotaro Aoyama, but they didn’t have my size. So we made a detour to their Koenji branch which, honestly, ended up being one of the best parts of the day. After that, we had soba at a Michelin Bib Gourmand spot in Shinjuku. We made a stop at a cafe collab by one of my favorite brands, Human Made. and since we were already in Shibuya, we dropped by to see the cherry blossoms at Sakuragaoka. So make sure to keep watching as we crossed neighborhoods, made detours, found places we’ve been looking for, and ended the day under a sky full of sakura. If you’ve ever had one of those days where things just fall into place… that’s this one. Aoyama is a fashionable and upscale neighborhood in Tokyo. It has well-designed stylish shops and calm cafes everywhere. You’ll find refined Japanese spots and several hidden gems. The pastel aesthetic is so pretty! We’re here at Maisen in Aoyama for lunch. Yep, the line’s already forming. Guess we’re not the only ones craving tonkatsu today. We got seated at the counter, which turned out to be the best spot. You get a full view of the kitchen—everything from the frying to the plating. According to their menu, Kurobuta is known for its fine meat fibers, rich flavor and aroma. This Kurobuta katsudon is served on a hot plate. Add a bit of the sesame dressing on the cabbage and it works like a reset between bites. Amakuchi has sweet and mild taste, while the Karakuchi has a more bold flavor. We didn’t end up using either, since the Kurobuta pork came with its own special sauce. This special Kurobuta sauce is made of their signature Karakuchi combined with Japanese spices and fresh apples. Melting all that juicy pork down with these glasses of hot tea. I see a man with a happy post-tonkatsu glow… I mean, a cute smile 😍🍺 The little takeout corner, perfect if you want the tonkatsu but not the wait. Omotesando is often called the Champs-Élysées of Tokyo. It’s a tree‑lined boulevard, stretching from Harajuku into Aoyama, lined with luxury flagship stores, high-end boutiques & elegant cafes and restaurants. We’re here at Moscot in Aoyama, hard to miss with this bold yellow storefront. It’s like a little NYC slice in Tokyo. Moscot’s been around since 1915, still got that old-school charm. Binoy is here for eyeglasses and of course had to try on Johnny Depp’s go-to: the Lemtosh frame. Unfortunately, they do not have an extra wide size of the Lemtosh so he got the Mekler frame instead. New frames secured! We dropped by the Momotaro Jeans store in Aoyama. There’s usually a line before you can go in, but we waited less than 30 minutes. Japanese denim has fans around the world, and for a good reason. The quality and craftsmanship are next level, and Momotaro is one of the best. “This is the Momotaro Jeans with two stripes.” “Some of the models doesn’t have two stripes at the back.” Checking out some of the jackets. It’s getting really cold outside. 😄 They even have a special sakura-dyed jacket. They alter the length right after purchase, hemming it to your exact measurements. They didn’t have my size for the wide-cut pair, but the staff kindly set up an appointment for later at their Koenji branch, where the pair is available. Off to Koenji now for that elusive pair of jeans we couldn’t find in Aoyama. 😅 It seems like they have more stocks here. Binoy is busy checking out the jeans, so I checked out the mirror instead. 😂📸 He’s the one shopping, I’m just here vibing with the good lighting. Found the one! Now getting it measured for the perfect fit. Looks like he found a jacket that’ll go perfectly with his new two-stripe Momotaro pair. Binoy ended up buying two pairs of jeans. The staff is really helpful and is now getting the hems adjusted. Here’s the adjusted length for pair #1, the wide cut. And here’s pair #2—the two-stripes straight cut, now perfectly hemmed. Binoy just did a little happy dance, safe to say he’s happy with his purchases 😄 Took a bit of hunting around Tokyo, but he finally got the jeans he wanted. “This is how it’s going to look like after 4 years.” “Check out the stripes.” And the happy dance continues… still not over the jeans 😂 I guess this is what finding the right pair does to him. 😆 Wrapping things up, literally. Two jeans and a jacket coming home with us. Got the care instructions and product cards, ove when brands pay attention to the details. Love the thoughtful packaging, too. Make sure to get a ticket before lining up. Spotted: this man mentally preparing for the wait.😆 In an earlier vlog, we came here but it was closed. We’re here now to try it
before our trip ends. Restaurant’s rules… This is a Michelin Bib Gourmand ramen spot. Finally inside and placing our orders. The broth really stands out. It’s light but packed with depth. Made with sea bream, clams, porcini, and a hint of truffle for a rich, refined taste. Extra meat! We’re heading to Human Made Café by Blue Bottle Coffee in Shibuya not just because it’s a cool-looking spot but because it’s one of Binoy’s
current favorite brands. Ooops, wrong entrance. Door’s shut on this side. You get to choose between two blends. We’re trying both. Future Blend is a soft, floral roast while “Past” leans richer & deeper with berry notes. Binoy: “Let’s have coffee.” They even have a retro style jukebox inside which fits perfectly with the aesthetic. Apart from the cafe, the store carries Human Made’s full line. You’ll find graphic shirts, jackets, caps, and accessories. We were just supposed to look, but somehow Binoy ended up at the counter. 😂 Binoy: “So I bought a lot from my favorite store — Binoy: some underwear, undershirts, and a coffee cup.” We passed by Miyashita Park again. If you’ve seen our very first vlog on Shibuya, you’ll remember we came here briefly but didn’t make it to the rooftop. The rooftop park has green lawns, a skatepark, climbing walls, & a sandcourt for volleyball. You’ll see that it’s a multipurpose complex of shopping, cafés, and green space. It’s located between Shibuya and Harajuku. The sun is starting to set, let’s head over to Sakura Street now. This is Kushidaore, a brightly lit kushikatsu spot. The trees here aren’t overly dense, but they arch slightly over the road and when they’re in bloom, it’s a quiet kind of pretty. There’s a soft pink light illuminating the blossoms, turning the street into a glowing, dreamy pink path. Right across the street is Shibuya Sakura Stage. This is a new complex that opened July 2024. This is a lively spot here at Shibuya Sakura Stage a DJ is playing upbeat music and you can enjoy cocktails, beer, and sakura-themed drinks. All that pink glow from the lanterns makes it feel even more like spring, soft, calm, and very sakura season. It seems to be a multi-layered pedestrian network linking Shibuya to other nearby areas. You’re on one level, the train’s moving above the street, and people are walking around you. It’s layered, but it all flows, very Tokyo. We might be a bit too late for Harbs… There are no more cakes left. 😂 Hope you enjoyed this vlog, see you in the next one! 🤍

  1. Wow! Every bite looked like a dream. And the stop at Momotaro in Koenji was such a cool touch. Japanese denim is on another level, and seeing those high-quality pieces up close was such a treat! But the real highlight was at 12:43 – that happy dance was everything! 😂
