Nijo Castle, built in 1603, is located in the heart of Kyoto It is a castle built on the order by Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu Nijo Castle holds significant importance in Japanese history This was the historic stage where the great government was returned in 1867 It marked Japan’s transition from the Shogunate era to the Meiji Restoration It was listed as a World Heritage “Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto” Main entrance “Higashi Otemon” (East Gate) Karamon Gate It is the main entrance to the “Ninomaru-goten Palace” Magnificient and brilliantly colored carvings The Karamon Gates is a powerful symbol of authority reflected in architecture Ninomaru-goten Palace It is the only remaining imperial palace complex within Japanese castles The palace consists of six connected buildings It is a Shoin-style architecture from the Edo period Ninomaru Garden There is a Horai Island in the center with Crane and Turtle islands on the sides It symbolizes the realm of paradise and longevity Visitors can enjoy the garden from different angles Honmaru Yagura-mon Gate Honmaru-goten Palace It is one of the few remaining Japanese imperial family residential The base of the keep tower Here you can overlook the Honmaru Palace and Gardens The entrance of Honmaru Palace Southeast Watchtower Next we will visit the Mikane Shrine This is a shrine dedicated to praying for money and wealth The shining, grand Torii gate
