⁴ᴷ Hokkaido: Muroran Station (北海道: 室蘭駅) – Japan Walking Tour (June, 2025)
To begin my journey around almost the entire island of Hokkaido, I took an 18-hour ferry ride and arrived in the city of Tomakomai. My first filming location was Hakodate, the southernmost point of Hokkaido.
From there, I made my way to Muroran. At Muroran Station, I saw a few students waiting for their train, but overall the area felt rather quiet and somewhat deserted. In the nearby drinking district, a handful of locals were out for a quiet Sunday evening, giving a subtle sense of everyday life despite the subdued atmosphere.
It had been four years since my last visit to Muroran, and compared to that time, some buildings had been demolished, and more seemed abandoned or in disrepair. The shopping street in particular felt even more desolate than before, leaving a stronger impression of decline.
