Tamsui 淡水 / Wisteria Garden 紫藤花園 / Fort San Domingo 紅毛城 [Taipei Day Trips Ep. 52, part 2]
Hello, guys! This is Jeff from “The Greatest
Journey”. This is part 2 of our Tamsui or 淡水 overnight trip. While my mom is taking her
afternoon rest, I am heading for the bus stop to take a ride to the outskirts of
Tamsui or 淡水 to visit a Wisteria Garden. Wisteria blooms for only 12 days from late March
to early April so time your visit properly. The bus ride to 屯山 or Tun Mountain takes
around 20 minutes but the waiting time for the bus could be long, so allow
enough time. Ok, I have to head out. After eating breakfast at the hotel,
we take the bus to Fort San Domingo, one of the most important landmarks in Tamsui.
It was originally built by the Spaniards in 1628 but was rebuilt as Fort Antonio by
the Dutch less than two decades later. The locals referred to the Dutch as “red hair
savages”, hence, the fort’s Chinese name 紅毛城. After the Opium War, the British leased
the building from the Qing government to use as a consulate. What we see of the building today is the fusion of Dutch and
British architectural elements. To get to the “Little White
House” from Fort San Domingo, we had to pass by the beautiful
campus of Aletheia University. After the Second Opium War, Taiwan had to open its ports for trade. A customs office was established and eventually staff residences
as well. The Tamsui Customs Officers’ Residence is otherwise known as “Little White House” 小白宮 because of its architecture.
Welcome to Season 6 of “Taipei Day Trips”. My channel, “The Greatest Journey”, presents my travel stories, and this series features day trips primarily within the greater Taipei area. In this season, I return to discovering and exploring new attractions and hidden gems in Taipei.
Episode 52 is a an overnight trip to Tamsui 淡水. The episode was filmed in April 2025. New videos are uploaded on Fridays.
