Just off a thousand-year-old port town, there’s a little island of cats. Friendly cats welcome you to a dreamy, peaceful escape. 🐈💕 We had the beach almost to ourselves, with the gentle waves and breeze of Setouchi all around. A one-night, two-day journey filled with seasonal flavors and quiet healing.
I hope you enjoy it. Good morning! Today We’re at Fukuyama Station in Hiroshima Prefecture. Fukuyama is the second largest city in Hiroshima. To reach today’s destination, we’ll take a small ferry from Tomonoura—a port town with over a thousand years of history. Let’s head to Tomonoura first. It takes about 30 minutes by bus from Fukuyama Station to Tomonoura. The fare is 620 yen. Just gazing out the window… and we’re already here. This is the rumored power spot—Sensui Island and Benten Island. 😳 Thank you very much. The historic streets of Tomonoura still remain beautifully preserved. So cute! I think that might be the ferry to Sensui Island. We have got some time, so let’s walk around a bit. Down these narrow alleys, you’ll find the old port town—just as it was 300 years ago. It really feels like a little time trip. This is where Hayao Miyazaki came up with the idea for Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea. He stayed here for three months. Tomonoura inspired the setting of the film. It really does look like Sosuke’s house. 🏡 And I’ve already met a few local cats in the alleyways. 🐈 This is the town’s most iconic landmark—the Joyato Lighthouse. Alright, let’s get our ferry tickets. 1,160 yen round-trip. Credit cards are accepted too. There are five round-trips per day. It’s a tiny ferry. Thank you. Seats are limited, so on holidays it can fill up with locals and fishermen. Let’s go! A quick 25-minute ride rocking on the ferry. And now, the island’s slow, peaceful time begins. ☺️ The first to greet me was a friendly island cat. Hello there. More cats keep coming! 😳 Nice to meet you. So cute! They’re all so friendly. 💕 Time to roll around and relax. Today, I came to the island with three friends. They love this place so much, they just can’t leave. Maybe that’s their favorite spot? 😊 A second round of massages, huh? So cute. As we moved, the island’s little harbor keepers started following us. 🐈 Soft pets. 😳 You’re the biggest tsundere I’ve met so far. You all just quietly stay close by. No punches this time. Such cute little paws. 🐾 There’s a small park here. Let’s take a little break. Want to come with me? You two are such good friends. Oh, you all are coming over here too. Look at you all gathered around. Time for some massages. Thank you. Does that feel good? Relaxing together while listening to the birds singing. I hear a motorcycle nearby. My work on the laptop is officially banned on the island. You’re all so friendly, I could use a hundred hands. Completely relaxed now. Looks like everyone’s satisfied. Now, it’s playtime. Did you enjoy playing? A little calico kitty, napping in the grass. It seems that the cats are being fed. Today’s appetizer is some cat milk. I heard about half of the cats here have been spayed or neutered. All done with your meal? Good for you. Relaxation time. Eating grass to reset the body from the inside. At its peak, about 2,000 people lived here. Now, it’s down to around 200 or 300. That’s such a cute little tail. 😊 Dozing off on top of a motorbike. This is the island’s clinic. We’re back at the harbor now. It’s about time for the hotel staff to come pick us up. See you all again tomorrow. Thanks for seeing us off. On the way to the hotel, there are a few amazing scenic spots. They kindly stopped at a beautiful spot along the way. Apparently, this was all shaped naturally. 👀 The hotel is on the other side of the Hashirijima port, in the Tosen area. Hello there. Nice to meet you. There are quite a few cats here at this fishing port too. The hotel staff kindly called over the cats they take care of. Their names are Kyo, Choco, and Shima. Looks like they’re showing us the way to the dining area. Thank you. We’ll be having breakfast and dinner here. Let’s head over to the hotel. This is Tennyo-ga-hama Beach. That’s the hotel over there. Since it’s a weekday, we have the whole beach to ourselves. That island is Ujishima. Sakamoto Ryoma’s ship, the Iroha-maru, sank around there. And it’s said he negotiated compensation back in Tomonoura. We’ve arrived at the hotel. A kitty is watching us. Bye-bye. The hotel is a whole-house rental. Excuse us. (Coming in!) There are four rooms, two baths, two showers, and three toilets. Here’s the living room and kitchen. So open and airy. We stayed for ¥50,000 for four people. (Rate varies by season, same price for up to 5 guests.) Upstairs has three rooms. And one on the ground floor. The beach view and sound of the waves are just beautiful. Time to head to dinner. The hotel’s resident cat. Drink menu. Dinner course: ¥6,000. Sea bream hotpot, swimming crab, and assorted side dishes. Sashimi platter: sea bream, octopus, squid, and filefish. “If it’s too much sashimi, you can lightly dip it in the hot pot.” A rare delicacy—high-grade akou rockfish. (This is for two.) So rich and springy—delicious! 😊 Simmered fish, chawanmushi (steamed egg custard), and more sides. One of the staff is a fisherman who goes out in the morning to catch all the fresh seafood. The simmered akou was amazing. So luxurious. Swimming crab. Tempura of shrimp, octopus, fish, and vegetables. Octopus rice. It was absolutely delicious! And they even came to see us off. See you tomorrow. The sky turns pink—like something out of a dream. I’m home. With a full belly, time for a little break in the cradle swing. 🥱 Feels just right. A soak in the bath… It looks like it leads into the sea—so beautiful. Well then, good night. Good morning. There’s still time before breakfast, so I’ll enjoy some coffee. With seasonings and cookware ready, this place is great for many types of stays. Sipping coffee slowly, with birdsong and the waves as my soundtrack. Taking a walk along the beach, then heading to breakfast. This peaceful quiet… it feels like pure luxury. Good morning. Breakfast set. ¥1,000 Hashirijima’s local seaweed. 😋 Good morning again. It seems like they’ll go for walks with me. So cute. The kitty is gently walking alongside me. A friend came to join, too. And now they’re heading back to their other home. The Legend of Tosen. A kitty on the breakwater. Maybe someone gave them fish? Cats keep crossing this little bridge one after another. What’s over there? Dead end. A fisherman told me they toss small fish to the cats from their boats. They know exactly which boats to visit for fish—pros at this. Checked out, and now heading back to Hashirijima Port. 🐾 Just off the coast of Tomonoura—a historic port town in Hiroshima with over a thousand years of history—there lies a small island where time seems to move a little more gently.
On this island, cats live naturally alongside people, woven quietly into the rhythm of everyday life.
According to a local resident, there may be around 70 to 80 cats here. Especially near the port, the cats are friendly and relaxed—some would even walk along beside me as I strolled through the island. The hotel I stayed at faced a quiet, nearly private beach. Meals featured the morning’s catch, prepared by the owner’s father, who is also a fisherman. Every dish, made with care and the freshest local seafood, offered a taste you could only experience in a place like this. Please enjoy the video until the end.
