The star of Cantonese films The Crucifixion (1994) and Somebody Up There Likes Me (1996), Hilary Tsui is regarded as one of Hong Kong’s most stylish women. She gave up acting to found fashion boutique Her in 2019, then started the Aim Higher Club with high-jumper Cecilia Yeung in 2022. Perhaps following her own advice, Tsui next became an avid snowboarder and frequently visits the Japanese resort of Niseko in Hokkaido, where the 51-year-old now has a holiday home. Here, she shares her favourite spots in the popular destination.
When did you first discover Niseko?

I first discovered Niseko many years ago when my daughter was still young. I had always hoped to return with her once she was older, so she could learn snowboarding. In 2018, that dream became a reality, and we visited together. Ever since that trip, we’ve made it a tradition to go back every season. I began spending more time there in 2022 after my house was completed and I love to stay for the entire winter season.
What are your favourite hotels in Niseko?

Setsu Niseko, which is close to the major ski resort Hirafu and was completed after Covid, and Park Hyatt Niseko Hanazono – if you want a personal and luxurious stay, you’ll find excellent restaurants as well as the famous Pierre Hermé bakery.

Birch Tree Cafe for clam chowder, quiche and hot chocolate; Udon Gokoro for chikuwa and egg tempura cold udon; Mountain Kiosk – the best hojicha latte; and Niseko Sanroku Parlour – delicious sandwiches on in-house bread.
