⁴ᴷ Hokkaido: Hakodate Station (北海道: 函館駅) – Japan Walking Tour (June, 2025)
To begin my journey around nearly the entire island of Hokkaido, I took an 18-hour ferry ride and arrived in Tomakomai. My first filming location was Hakodate, the southernmost city in Hokkaido.
In front of Hakodate Station lies the Daimon district, which once flourished as Hokkaido’s premier entertainment area, filled with red-light establishments and eateries. Today, the area mainly caters to tourists with its restaurants and bars, though traces of its past still remain. Right next to the station is the Hakodate Morning Market, which is mostly closed at night, giving the area a quieter, more subdued atmosphere after dark.
Coincidentally, this day also saw the arrival of the large cruise ship Celebrity Millennium at the nearby Wakamatsu Wharf, and foreign tourists were particularly noticeable around the area.
