Higashi Chaya District, IshikawaJapan’s inbound tourism from India marked a new record in May 2025, with over 43,000 Indian travellers visiting the country—crossing the 40,000 mark in a single month for the first time. The data, released by the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO), highlights India’s growing role as a key tourism source market in Asia.
The surge is attributed to a combination of factors, including Japan’s seasonal appeal in May, which aligns with the Indian summer holiday period. The month also follows Japan’s own Golden Week holiday, creating more availability and flexibility for Indian travellers. With comfortable weather and lighter tourist footfall, May presents ideal conditions for Indian visitors exploring Japan’s historic districts, cultural landmarks, and natural landscapes.
Building on strong momentum from 2024, when Japan hosted a record 233,100 Indian visitors, the growth has accelerated further in 2025. Between January and May this year, approximately 142,400 Indians visited Japan—a 39.6 per cent rise over the same period in 2024, which saw 102,100 arrivals. This upward trend underlines the impact of consistent promotional efforts by JNTO’s Delhi office and its partners in enhancing awareness and accessibility.
As part of the build-up to EXPO 2025 in Osaka, JNTO has launched a Digital NFT Art Collection Campaign aimed at international visitors. This interactive initiative encourages travellers to collect digital stamps linked to specific locations across Japan. Each location unlocks unique content and offers opportunities to earn limited-edition souvenirs. The initiative blends regional exploration with digital engagement, aiming to foster deeper travel into less-explored prefectures.
Participation in the NFT campaign is free and open to all overseas travellers, including Indian tourists. By collecting more NFTs across their journey, visitors can access special rewards connected to EXPO 2025, reinforcing Japan’s push to blend cultural immersion with technological innovation in tourism.
