Hakadote was one of the ports that we visited during our transpacific cruise from Yokohama, Japan to Seattle, Washington. It is a port city on Hokkaido, northernmost of the four main islands of Japan. It has a rich history and culture, offering spectacular views from Mount Hakodate, fresh seafood, historical buildings, hot springs, and more.
We spent the day touring the city and visited the Hakadote Morning Fish Market, Goryokaku Park and enjoyed shopping at the Red Brick Warehouses where several red brick warehouses from past trading days survive along the waterfront in the bay area of Hakodate and have been redeveloped into an atmospheric shopping, dining and entertainment complex.
The absolute highlight of the day was seeing the 1500 cherry trees at Goryokaku Park – in full bloom! They were so beautiful that it felt as if we were strolling through an enchanted forest.
